Two policemen have been placed on bail after they appeared in court for allegedly facilitating the escape of a prisoner. Police Constable Garfield Brown and his alleged accomplice Constable Smith appeared before Magistrate Clive Nurse at the Wales Magistrate’s Court, West Bank Demerara, yesterday. According to the charge, on May 6, 2014 the officers allowed a prisoner, who was wanted in Berbice for murder and rape, to escape from custody.  The two cops were reportedly stationed at the La Grange Police Station when the incident occurred. The prisoner, who was identified as Troy Joseph, had allegedly paid the policemen $40,000 for his release. After pleading not guilty to the charge, Magistrate Nurse granted Constables Smith and Brown bail in the sum of $75,000 each.
