Jagdeo sounds wake-up call to Govt

… says poor people will suffer
Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo has warned the A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change

jagdeo

Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo

(APNU/AFC) Government that Guyana’s economy could soon hit rock bottom – a situation that would affect every citizen – and that a well planned out approach is urgently needed to keep this from happening.
He made this pronouncement on Wednesday, even as he called on the Administration to “wake up” and acknowledge the problem so that a remedy could be derived.
Jagdeo was at the time addressing journalists at the Party’s head office on Robb Street.
According to the former President, with the current state of affairs, Government is failing to address the needs of the people.
“Things are going to get worse, because we have a Government that is not acknowledging the problem. And if they don’t acknowledge it, they can’t fix it,” the Opposition Leader said.
He said there is no doubt the economy will slide further “if these people do not wake up. They can wake up”, he said, continuing that it is not just supporters of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) that are hurting, “all Guyanese are hurting. People are losing their cars, they cannot pay their monthly installments for their cars and homes etc. It’s not a partisan thing, everybody will be affected,” he stressed.
Jagdeo reminded of Government’s promise that the just concluded jubilee celebration would have seen a boom in the economy. However, there has been no indication of this.
“My argument is that they can arrest this, they can change this, they can change the narrative around the economy. They can change the policies that would promote investments etc. It is within their hands to send the right signal that would say to everybody that it is time that we spend our money,” the former President posited.
Jagdeo said he could not understand the logic behind the recent pronouncement by the Finance Minister that there is now a slowdown in the economy because there has been a slowdown in the flow of “drug money”.
“I saw the central bank trying to talk up the economy a little bit, maybe following directions from the Minister. But this Minister is confused. Once he says there must be a slowdown, this must be a PPP propaganda. But what slowdown is he talking about?” Then a week later after he was fed some excuse that it is drug money, that its got to be about drug money. So he’s moving from there’s no slowdown to that there is a slowdown, but with drug money.”
He said this assertion has caused the President to say recently that most of the huge buildings under construction have some link to illegal proceeds.
“So people come to me and I say to them hold on to your money if you have money, because we don’t know where this is going… I would say to businessmen, do not put up another building in the city, because every time you do that and the President drives by, he will think that it is coming from drug money or illegal proceeds, then [Special Organised Crime Unit] SOCU might visit you,” Jagdeo said.
According to Jagdeo, while opposition leaders would be happy that the economy is sliding, it is not the same for his Party, since “we want to make sure that the economy keeps sticking.”
Meanwhile, Jagdeo took to task the recent statement made by the Finance Minister that any bailout of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) could affect Government’s ability to pay public servants.
“Are they going to pay the public servants, and how much are they going to pay them. That’s the question. Nagamootoo said they had money set aside for over 100 per cent increase in salary for public servants. When those payments will be effected?” he asked.
He continued, saying “nobody is fights for the public servants. Many of them thought they had a champion in APNU. The President said some of them are lazy and they cannot expect high salaries. Is this not prejudicial to the negotiation? Is that statement going to be used to give the public servant paltry increases in salary? So when are they going to effect the payout to public servants? he again questioned.
“Here is Jordan talking about some bailout of sugar affecting public servants, but he has just exposed the treasury to over 600 million of liability”, the former Head of State said.

Jagdeo's comment was empty.   As leader of the opposition he ought to be offering ideas, and specific steps that he plans to introduce in parliament.

He says nothing more than I would expect of a market vendor.

This merely confirms that Jagdeo didn't study economics. What drives the economy are consumer expenditures, and business investment.

Jagdeo is actually screaming for a recession, so that he can be validated.

I am still waiting for him to outline what the PPP would be doing differently.

Jagdeo should shut his blasted mouth and let the people get a damn dose of what they elected. The majority of the voters elected the APNU/AFC because they feel that the current Coalition has ideas and policies that they want to see implemented. If the government fails in doing so, the voters must feel the pain.

What Jagdeo should be concentrating on now is to fix a date and location for the PPP Congress and let delegates elect who they want, Fairly and Freely, to run the operations including the leadership of the party. No interference or rigging whatsoever and no HOI and criminals should be allowed to attend and vote.

Until then the party should shut their traps.

What nonsense is BJ talking about here. The Public Service voted APNU/AFC. Let them face the damn fire. Let dem rass punish. When PPP was in power Jagdeo used to give away nuff, nuff money to the Public Servants  and give a pittance to Pensioners to save face. Why doesn't Jagdeo address the issues that the people have with him. Dem humiliated him at the 50 th Anniversary, like if that isn't enough, like he want dem kick he rass and spit in he face.

The government of a democracy, which Guyana claims to be, consists of the executive arm (the coalition) and the legislative arm, of which the PPP is a part.

The PPP has an obligation to come up with solutions to solve Guyana's problems, table bills to ensure that this is done, and hold the executive arm to account.

If the PPP doesn't do this, then they deserve to lose in 2020.

Jagdeo is just whining and wailing, but what pours of his mouth is NONSENSE.  Screaming that Guyanese must stop spending and investing, and that Guyana should mortgage its rice industry to Guyana. Wailing about imminent closures of Demerara estates, when this is exactly what the PPP had begun to do.

It would have been much better if they dug deep and came up with honest solutions to the rice and sugar industries, crime and other problems faced by Guyanese.   Cheap race based politicking is nonsensical and unproductive.

So if the PPP doesn't come up with solutions, why should they be elected in 2020.

By then the Indo population will be even smaller than it is now. Especially with all the screams that Guyana is now a hell hole for Indians.

The PPP will have to prove that they deserve the support of non Indians. Because then this will be an even larger % of the voters.

Right now all of their race based screams show that they aren't, and so we shouldn't be shocked about how badly the PPP did outside of PPP (Indian) strongholds in the recent LGE.

Caribny, I am astounded that the CCH was not awarded to you for your unending service to Guyana for "Cheap race based nonsensical and unproductive politics". What happened they left you out - maybe they thought that you were undeserving?

No, he is saying the freaking Govt does not know it's head from it's tail.  BJ was the former Finance minister of the PPP very respected by people like Carter and others internationally.  Rather than criticizing what he is saying, ask why are Businessmen seeking his advise rather then listening to the PNC and their quacks?

He is doing what any politician will do, exploit uncertainty coming from the Govt for their advantage.  It is for the PNC to mitigate what he is saying, they are the sitting Govt and hold power.  Which real businessmen will listen, well not your type, he don't care what you think?  I met a few recently, and they are listening.  When, in the last Go-Invest meeting Dominic Gaskin said: we know the economy hit a snag, but you people come and invest and we "hope" it will turn in about two years.  Well that just don't cut it.  No prudent businessman will invest and "hope", that is for lottery players!  People want policy statements and how it impacts them.

Maybe your boys can throw impressive bakanal, but that's not how a country is developed!

FM

@BA$EMAN You make valid points, BJ is tapping into the one thing that one PPP can really ram home (Needs to leave the 'We are the Coolie party' thing well alone !!!! ) at this stage

The private sector are key to growth and future jobs , now and in the future, I did listen to DG ...And well.....nice guy, wrong job. This is such a vital area for the coalition and they have to get this right and obvious to all they are falling short at this stage..very short

Not sure on the bakanal comment as it was what it was but you can't hope and prey on a whim that a short injection of diaspora cash will drive the economy any where fast, medium to long term.

One night stand don't raise a family! Diaspora cash hardly offset the outflows from the treasury to sponsor the thing.  But fine, it was a feel good party for he PNC and their constituency!  Now i hope they had their fill of fun and frolic and will get down to what they are drawing those sky high salaries, real work and i mean beyond sweeping the streets of GT.

They keep screwing around, beware, BJ just in pilot light mode

Sorry...But BJ just isn't the right man for the PPP at this stage far to divisive within the PPP and yes he'll win the Coolie vote if that's what he wants but then be prepared to sit on the sub benches for a very long time to come

..like the 'One night stand don't raise a family!' line ...There does need to have some joined up thinking in this area it's role that that doesn't have to be partisan either ..Just results..and a plan to start .. DG wont be able to achieve that I'm afraid

BJ does not want to be president.  He is one of the greatest nationalists Guyana have had but this will only be realized in time.  LFSB will be the greatest albatros Guyana ever had and Rodney the Greatest missed opportunity!!

PPP is as Indian as PNC is Black, so tell us something new.  PPP ran against 9 parties + the CIA/GECOM and lost by 1%, so much for a "coolie" party!  Go figure sense from nonsense!!

Jagdeo would improve his profile if he came up with ideas, and came up with bills to force the government to implement his plans.

He has NOT revealed what he thinks that the government is doing wrong.  Given that most people think that the PPP was a drug infested entity they will likely swallow up that reduced drug transshipments has had adverse impact.

So those who don't like him, will continue not to like him, and with a dwindling Indo population, a declining % of the population do.

In 2020 the PPP will not be going to the people with the ability to buy their votes, or to threaten them damage if they vote for others.  So that 20% of the PPP votes that came from non Indians, will be less available to them.

So yes Jagdeo can "exploit" the situation by behaving like an ignorant market vendor.  Or he can show the public that indeed he is the one fit to lead.

Given that we all know that Jagdeo is a vindictive bytch, we all know that screaming and cussing up like an ignorant market vendor is more his style.

So when the coalition comes up with half an idea, it will be half an idea more than the PPP did.

Come 2020 people will ask, what did the PPP do? What ideas did they bring? What bills did they introduce in parliament?

So the mediocre coalition ends up looking better than the fretful PPP.

But continue. By 2020 the Indians will be 38%, and the coalition will have taken at least 50% of the Amerindian vote.
