Italy threatens to grant migrants temporary EU visas

BRUSSELS — Italy is said to be threatening to provide asylum seekers with temporary EU visas if EU countries don't agree to help share the burden of a huge influx of migrants from Africa and the Middle East seeking refuge within EU borders.

Southern EU countries like Italy, Spain and Greece have had to shoulder the burden of tens of thousands of migrants and refugees attempting to enter the economic bloc via dangerous passages across the Mediterranean Sea.

While Italy makes its threats, the EU home affairs ministers have postponed a decision on a proposal to introduce a quota system to spread refugees across the bloc, and at the same time Turkey is also pressuring the EU to help accept migrants fleeing Syria and Iraq.
