Some elections are won or lost on slogans. While I think Moses meant that he is Guyanese first, because no sane person will deny their heritage, it may turn out to be a big political blunder for making the statement “I am not Indian”. The PPP have used it as a rallying cry to circle the wagons.

If the PPP does end up winning the elections then I believe that the APNU/AFC need to have a post mortem anyway to make sure the same type of missteps do not occur in future. If the APNU does, indeed, lose then maybe only an AFC or Moses cultist may not see the damage done by the “I am not Indian” statement”.

The good thing for the APNU/AFC is that there are still a few days left to clarify that statement.

Replies sorted oldest to newest

"I am not Indian" clarifies for those of us on the fence who have deep personal reservations about Moses Nagamootoo the unrepentant Marxist and Jaganite.

For this Coalition to work, we must have a strong Indian to sit with the PNC in Government. Moses is unfortunately not that strong Indian we need.

I support fully the idea of cross-ethnic alliances. I just want to send the right Indians to negotiate and represent Indians. Moses and the AFC crowd are not it. Only Dr. Ramayya would I trust.

Lastly, I can't emphasize how devastating the "I'm not Indian" comment has been to Moses. It reminded us all why we can't trust him. And instead of walking back the comment, he stayed silent. Qui tacet consentire videtur. His silence signifies consent. Moses didn't even attempt to try and allay the concerns of those of us likely to support him.

I do not begrudge the PNC representing Blacks and their interests. I'm just waiting for the Indians who can represent Indians in such a cross ethnic coalition.

The Coalition will not lose because Indians are racist. It will lose because Moses is hard headed and doesn't understand his role and what we need him to be in a PNC-dominated Government.

Voters want to see politicians as people's person during election season. Voters are sensitive in ways politicians connect with them. Trying to fetch 11% Indian when you deny you're NOT Indian, you're going home with an empty basket.

Tell me who does the coalition has in authority to represent the Indians if they win the election. Ranjaatan is quiet, Moses is the most senior person on board that can give HOPE to the Indian. Guyanese are not stupid, but an Indian is an Indian, the same with Blacks, Granger NEVER said he is not Black and that by it self strengthen his support to the Blacks. To the Indians who don't support the coalition, they feel they are screwed if the PPP lose.

.

The only reason why this issue came up is that the PPP is circling the waggons waging a tribal screams. Nagamootoo received a GOPIO award and made mention of the fact that his connections are to Guyana.  He cited some one from Pakistan as an example, so clearly referred to nationality and not cultural heritage.

This was several years ago and the PPP was perfectly fine with it then, and indeed DID NOT raise it in the last election.

Now they fear loss if Indians defect, and have given up making significant inroads into the African/mixed bloc, they use this to scream tribalism.   Last time they entertained fantasies of making inroads into PNC strongholds, so downplayed race.

But I get back to the fact.  Elisabeth Harper is NOT screaming race.  And if she did scream race she ould be immediately DROPPED.

Shaitaan its a pity that a sensible man like you is allowing yourself to be USED!

I appreciate your concern for me. I'm sure. However, I doubt I could ever be amenable to an AFC crowd that seems to go to ridiculous lengths to attempt and rubbish people who were genuinely on the fence and wanted to support them. Witness Kishan and/or George/Jalil here who apparently have evidence of me as a homeless, alcoholic, hungry, child molestor since 1998 (I was not yet 16 at the time).

Well Indians are being set up to look like racists if the only context that they can see themselves in is as Indians.

Cross ethnic alliances are based on people seeing themselves first and foremost as Guyanese, with a range of common interests.  If some one enters into an alliance with the notion that they are an "Indian" leader, the presumption is that their interests begin and end with Indians, and not inclusive of other ethnicities. So why then will other ethnic groups support them?

Cross ethnic alliances are exactly what they are.  People from different ethnic groups working together to support goals of mutual interest with the notion that every one will benefit.

Unless the Indo faction listens to and shows interest in the Afro faction and the Afro in the Indo, there is no basis for an alliance.

In addition there are no monolithic Indo and Afro groups, so there shouldnt be some test to determine if some one is Indo or Afro enough.

Continued screaming will lead to Guyana becoming another Fiji and I dont think that any one except Jagdeo wants that.  Jagdeo of course using his paramilitias to ensure that he gets what he wants.

It is not only stupid it is tacitly racist and divisive even among Indians. It presumes there is an authority that knows what it is to be an Indian and they hold the key to the definition. Worse, a corrupt regime claims to hold the certificate of authenticity!  As I said, being of any ethnic group is not like pie, the same throughout.

Every group has factions and shades of allegiances that matters to them. This circling the wagon for some perverted definition of the "indian" as quintessential to be adhered to by all from the group is bull crap. They are madrasi, kali followers, Arya samage, Sanathan Dharm, atheists, Muslims, Chrtistians and Hindus and they are all indians.

Everyone of these are Guyanese and are not Guyanese because they subscribe to some neuvo Hinduva tradition. That is fanatical, revivalist golden age wishful thinking. The Indians of Guyana are not even from the same tribe but harvested from some 20 or so groups of underclassed from the backsides of India.

In Guyana they became one. That is what makes them Indian not the idiocy that they are from India where they were outcasts. In Guyana they became a whole human being. Their siblings who remain in India are still existing on the backsides of India with little hope to get out.

The GNI AFC crowd do not represent what the AFC is.

In fact the AFC is probably the hardest to define group because they consist of people tired of racial politics, as well as others filled with ideals.  They combine ROAR, the old time UF people, plus the more middle class disillusioned PNC and PPP crowd.  And then Moses walks in with his frustrated Jaganites and Indo business people who are fearful of crime and of the fact that corruption in Guyana sometimes has life and death consequences.

Redux, HM, Mitwah might engage in rubbishing, but Gillbakka doesnt.  I agree with you when I do and attack you when I don't.

In the English speaking Caribbean Guyanese have the lowest GDP per capita, the highest infant and maternal mortality rates, the lowest usage levels of internet, the worst educational performance as measured by CXC results, and the lowest Human Development Index.  We also rank high in our suicide rate.

Why when Guyana has the most resources, and indeed the only one which doesnt have excess population?  RACE!

The rest will circle the waggons like white South Africans.  Well you do know that their came a time when the fact that their votes were pout numbered led to their loss of dominance.

I agree 100%

people who only see race will agree...no surprise

Guyana election is all about race. It has been that way and it continues that way. The British leave us with "Divide and Conquer".

...so if the British had left us eating grass, then plenty of us will still be eating grass

Thanks for bringing that up. If Burnham had lived, we would turn cow and donkey to graze on green pastures. Thanks to Cheddi Jagan and Bharat Jagdeo. Hoyte was under pressure to give into free and fair election. His intention was NOT to do so, but he had to. Cheddi Jagan was well prepared and the PPP won with a Majority.

as usual...scream Burnham when you run out of things to say

Sir, if Burnham had lived, he would have held on to power as long as Castro of Cuba. I am making a valid point here.

If Jagan was there he would have done the same thing and bankrupted the country with the same Communist nationalization bullshit which he voted for by the way.
