Hundreds of persons plying their trade in the environs of Stabroek Market were on Thursday summoned to a meeting at the Georgetown City Council where they were informed of a definite plan to relocate them “temporarily.’

The vendors sat under a tent in the compound as Town Clerk Royston King made the announcement.

King declared that the move was part of an overarching plan to restore Georgetown and more specifically, the Stabroek Market.

The plan is to move the hundreds of vendors to a lot which formerly housed fast food franchise Royal Castle at Hadfield and Lombard Streets. King said that the initial move would be for a temporary period of four months.

“As you know that area is very iconic, it is very rich in history and we need to create a new set of energies that will allow the beauty of that particular to emanate,” King said referring to the Stabroek Square.

The Town Clerk said that the area will be outfitted with security on a 24 hour basis and will also have the amenities that are needed.

Asked whether space would be a concern given the amount of persons being move, King responded in the negative.

“That land is adequate to take off all the people that we are looking at; particularly those people that are on the immediate periphery of that square,” said King.

A commitment has been made to provide additional space for persons that are not able to acquire spots.

He said that from his observation, the vendors have no objection to the move, however this support was no unanimous.

Mario Joseph, one of the vendors affected by the move was particularly concerned about the possible loss of revenue and space availability.

“That’s one of the most central hubs for hundreds of people and if you are going to relocate them another location – they definitely won’t experience the same level of commerce…It is going to be a difficult business move for everybody who has to relocate,” Joseph told Demerara Waves.

Another vendor said that the move was plainly “unfair” and “disrespectful to vendors.”

“You just sit down, you make a decision – you never consult with us and then you come and tell us that you have to move – move into an area that cannot accommodate the quantum of vendors,” said Conway Douglas.

If there is any saving grace in this govt, it is the ability to push around their fellow Blacks without a peep out of them. Notice as Nehru mentioned, no protest by Benchy.  Under the PPP the same efforts were met with protest and disruption by the PNC.  This is further proof that they were purposely disrupting the efforts of the PPP to govern the nation.

Correct, you would see the likes of Caribj, Mars, Django, etc up in arms about racists PPP if them attempted the same.  Frankly I believe it's long overdue!

And I thought that only Indians were being harassed by the coalition.

Also quit your nonsense.  Why did we not see any senior person arrested for the death of Sat Sawh?  If Jagdeo is so confident that he knew who was responsible, why has he NEVER revealed who were the master minds behind that killing?

The last directly PNC led protests ended in 2001.  Guyana's economy was stagnant, until gold rescued it.

Correct, you would see the likes of Caribj,.!

And yet you scream that the PNC is on an "Indian eradication" drive.

The bulk of the people whose livelihood is being jeopardized in this move are blacks. This follows similar action where black farmers were being tossed off lands.

I have had lots to say about this coalition gov't, and you are fully aware of this.

Good ting PPP lost, this nicing up and cleanup would never have happened.

When the PPP catches sense, and dumps racists like Jagdeo, this might well be the type of activity that guarantees that the coalition loses.

They are on thin ice, and word is that blacks are going to stay home next time, unless they change their attitude.

Apparently you see this this action as harassment rather than nation building efforts.  Anyway I wish the PNC good luck in keeping their supporters in check over the next 4 years. Clear them from the pavements and shanty town type of vending environment that are eyesores rather than a benefit to the nation.

Actually APNU and AFC were over joyed when Jagdeo commandeered the PPP.  Jagdeo has just cost them an election, with the PPP losing its first free and fair election.  This being something that they didn't think possible.

Now had the PPP completely transformed its leadership, appointing a young, dynamic, innovative, and most importantly, multi ethnic team, APNU AFC would have been shivering in their pants.

Because APNU might have had the humiliation of a PPP mayor of G/town.

But Jagdeo, head of the "coolie people party", hates non Indians, and so guarantees that they hate him back.

There are now more non Indians in Guyana than there are Indians.

Nah, after 23 years, people actually start believing the PNC had something more to offer.  The PPP fell short on the PR front giving the PNC/AFC ample room to make up lies and promise the moon.  A few percentage drank the kool aid and the rest is history!

PPP is not a "coolie people party", even when they lost, the ratio indicated a large amount of non-Indian votes stuck with the PPP!!

Caribj, you can spout lies from the roof top till the 2nd coming of Christ, it still does not make it truth!!

Rohee said that the PPP is a "coolie people party", and Jagdeo recently screamed that the PPP had "consolidated the East Indian support base".

The Amerindian votes are now shifting to the coalition.  The loss of Lethem and Mabaruma indicates this.
