I will suggest that when she tells a majority black audience that the PPP is using "people who look like us and people who look like Bharat" she isnt discussing policy or about competency.

When this type of language came out of the mouth of Jagdeo I condemned it.

Question why she uses this language instead of outlining what plans that APNU (and maybe AFC) have to improve the lives of people of GT and how this is better than what the PPP can offer?

I know that you aren't that naïve.

As long as you understand that the PPP started this nonsense.  Jagdeo was full of this in the last election.  Clearly appealing to an ethnic base.

The same way that Berbicians are suffering when they elected a bunch of PPP crooks and thieves.

And please dont deny this when the population of Region 6 declined by over 20% in the years when the PPP was in power. No other region suffered such a catastrophic decline.

interesting question [we likely agree on the answer] . . . but that’s not the subject of THIS thread

now focus, and stop meandering all over the place

Indos care about their brothers and sisters and are moving to prosperous countries like Canada and USA making us one of the most prosperous groups of immigrants. We sponsor our relatives, this is the biggest contributing factor. We are a people on the move and prosperity is not catastrophic for us.

PPP won the LGE with a 61 percent margin and moved into PNC strongholds and giving them shytings.

The PNC needs to worry at this time.

I agree that Guyana appears to be lost. Imagine the People of GT selecting the same bunch of crooked thieves to govern while it smells like a Latrine. Go figure.

ronan posted:

I am not meandering.  I am merely saying that reverting to ethnic appeals isnt the way for APNU to deal with the fact that it was arrogant with its base and the base responded by staying home.  So does APNU now think that they won their battle with the teachers and the vendors and others of the PNC base? Or dealt with the anger that many within the PNC feel when they see APNU officials dealing with the same corrupt oligarchs that also benefitted under Jagdeo?

So APNU resorts to open ethnic pandering to divert from these issues.

Volda's question should have been about querying why apparently the crowds were almost exclusively black.  Instead of pandering to them by talking about the PPP fielding "people who look like you" in order to fool them.  Also talking about "others who looked like Bharat".  The devout party base alone never wins elections, so their cheers dont matter.  Even David Hinds seems concerned about this.

I dont see how this differs from when Jagdeo, having defined the PPP as a party whose base is rural Indian, then screams "we gun tek back Guyana for us".

Indo Guyanese are NOT the most prosperous of immigrants. Stop living vicariously through the success of Asian Indians. This elite group of South Asian immigrants look down their noses at you and this fact has been discussed over the past few days.

Jagdeo said "we gun tek back Guyana" and many, including Ralph Ramkarran, understood the ethnic implications.  Especially when Jagdeo screamed that "we" means rural Indians (notably not urban).

Volda says about the PPP using people "who look like you" and then says she gun only hire PNC people. Now who "looks like you" when the crowd as almost exclusively black?

I am surprised that you do not see in Guyana how both politicians aren't playing the same game of ethnic pandering to garner greater support from their ethnic base.

The reality is that Indians are now just over 40% of the vote and blacks around 32% and we can add those mixed identified people whose political behavior is like that of blacks.

Fact is that neither add up to more than 50% so such blatant ethnic appeals do not work.  APNU just left room open for Jagdeo to pull his stunts.

Ronan,

With all due respect,

Carib is right about what he is saying, Re: "stoking ethnic fears".

I have said before that words matter, especially when its coming from top political leaders who

a) do not think about what they are saying because they get all emotional and speak from their heart rather than their head and

b) do not take into consideration how their rhetoric is being received by the "others"

Now, Jagdeo at Babu John was a more extreme case, but Volda, a PNC leader (possible president) is going to be carefully monitored (as old man Granger becomes more like a "Lame Duck" president) and her narrative are going to be amplified when it is perceived to contain "coded words".

If anything it is adding fodder to the PPP's arsenal.

Dont forget that the country is already divided and those in power seems to believe that "we in charge now".

Politicians in Guyana are not known for "rising above the fray" or even pretend for a minute to speak on behalf of ALL GUYANESE....the tribalism rears its ugly head ....I am telling you it will get worse...and dont think for a minute that when the cameras are not running that politicians will be talking about "ONE LOVE" and "ONE NATION".

This referenced excerpt is quite telling:

"people who look like us and people who look like Bharat"

I would suggest you take a step back, pretend you are Jagdeo or a PPP supporter, and try and analyze Volda's statement from the perspective of an Indo...

No one's crucifying Volda...your heroine...she is perceived as a "President in waiting"

...as such her words can have the potential of inflaming passions, not necessarily causing a backlash from Indos, but her own supporters...who are inclined to believe that "invaders" must be removed from the "PNC house".

Volda knows that her supporters are aware that they have to do better at the 2020 election...so instead ...why not focus on why the PNC lost seats and how they plan to do better.

Here is a novel idea...instead of speaking to the faithfuls...why not  ask Volda to do a 360 and go into a predominantly Indo area and articulate  a national program her government will implement to benefit all Guyanese.

If she can do this and pull off a Rodneyite kind of multi-cultural support, and avoid invoking the "Bharrat bogey man", then she may be credited for cultivating a new kind of political culture in Guyana....one in which the benevolent victors are willing to share the spoils with the "others"...and their screams of "social cohesion" might be taken seriously.

Who has given her a pass you fat rat? Everyone here has condemned her comments except for the one with "look like Bharat" where she was actually trying to make the point of attracting Indians to the PNC and came off like a buffoon.

Nobody is currently running for President on the PNC side but given Granger's health situation, they might well need a candidate in 2020. Volda would be one of the obvious front runners for the nomination from the PNC.

Sorry, but I cannot condone these reckless comments made by Ms. Lawrence. This doesn't sit well with me, coming from a potential presidential candidate in Guyana.

If moss yuh votes coming fram one race and yuh seh all yuh frends dem from dat race...den all de peopkle yuh gee wuk is blackman. dis is de same reason dat BOG had 3 or 4 coolies in 1992 when PPP tek over. I agree the comments may not necessarily be racist, but being that mostly Afros support PNC and Indos PPP, the general conclusion could be that she want ah black for the position. (thus statement seen as racist)

She knows the history of Guyana, so the statement is reckless and shows that she nah ready yet....

I would suggest you take a step back, pretend you are Jagdeo or a PPP supporter, and try and analyze Volda's statement from the perspective of an Indo...

My question to you will be how many Indians take the time to understand how blacks felt under the PPP.  And this is important because many aren't going to tolerate a return of that era.

Jagdeo is a card carrying black hating racist and he failed in attempting to intimidate Freddie K who called him exactly that.

2020 comes and it isnt just blacks or the PNC which ought to be held t account. Even Gilbakka, a moderate and fair man (or at least I think that he is) seems to believe that all the PPP needs to do is to preach their gospel to black/mixed voters.  Indians just refuse to understand that it is not only they who feel the sting of ethnic insecurity.

And after she told the crowd that she is only going to hire PNC people how will she accomplish this?

Her speech certainly didn't speak to inclusion at any level.  Yes she and the rest of them are now in panic with the sudden realization that they will be sent back outside when the PPP wins in 2020.  So now all types of intemperate chatter.

The question she should have been asking is why is it that the crowds were almost exclusively black, because it is blatantly obvious that the black vote alone (even with black identified mixed people included) cannot win any election in Guyana.

The PPP did exactly that during their era and allegedly still do this in spheres under their control. And then there are Indo controlled businesses which are just as bad.

So no we dont have to imagine we already know when during the Jagdeo era young black professionals looking for jobs were told "Is not Burnham time now" and sent packing to the Caribbean to find work.

The fact that this is how she handles the frustration of the PNC base, who felt oppressed by the PPP, and then ignored by the APNU elites, doesn't speak well of her.

She and her colleagues are afraid of losing their jobs, and those who weren't corrupt face financial distress, as many did after 1992. Carl Greenidge had to leave Guyana to find work, and even then the PPP attempted to block him.

She is NOT in order to say this unless its about positions within the PNC itself. Her role is to ensure that the PNC and its allies are re-elected to office and in a nation where Africans are only 32% of the voting age population, and when the PNC has never on its own, won more than 41% of the votes, she needs to be open.

She has given that monster Jagdeo the ability to pretend to be open minded as he uses black tokens, who then are tossed aside once he has achieved his goals.

not really . . . they are creative punctuation

i sincerely doubt that that is too ‘high level’ for you . . . rite?

That's mostly all you say in every post so how can that be high level? It might be high level for you, given your level of intelligence or should I say your lack thereof?

and, since we are HERE . . . are you willing to acknowledge that Volda Lawrence has been FALSELY accused of “racist” comments as indicated in my lead post here?

Let me make it easy for you. As far as most Guyanese are concerned PNC is code for black and PPP is code for Indians.  You mightn't think this but this is how it is and we have seen this behavior manifested by both sides when they want revenge.

What Volda says she would do the PPP actually did.  It was wrong when they did it and it is wrong for Volda to say this.

As of now the PPP is more likely to win the election.  Their loss was narrow and its clear that the PNC base will not turn out in the record numbers that it did in GT, Linden and Bartica.

So if the PPP does win they can continue to practice their exclusion, and then quote Volda when they are accused of this.  Given that blacks are numerically outnumbered and economically dominated they can ill afford to encourage this nonsense.  They cannot protest against exclusion and then threaten (even in an emotional rant) to exclude.

she is PNC chair . . . she is not running for president

guilty of one thing DOES NOT make her guilty of EVERYTHING!

she is PERFECTLY IN ORDER with [her] comments addressed on THIS thread

She is NOT in order to say this unless its about positions within the PNC itself. Her role is to ensure that the PNC and its allies are re-elected to office and in a nation where Africans are only 32% of the voting age population, and when the PNC has never on its own, won more than 41% of the votes, she needs to be open.

She has given that monster Jagdeo the ability to pretend to be open minded as he uses black tokens, who then are tossed aside once he has achieved his goals.

I agree with some of what you said.  But why you refer to BJ as a monster?  The Black People of Guyana seems cordial with him. He surely cannot be that bad and still walk among them so freely!

There is something missing in the whole bunch.  I believe Granger has not been an assertive strong leader so they seem adrift!  They missing a credo!

It is quite clear that the PNC lacks intelligence or cunning.  They fall into every trap that the PPP sets, and even some that the PPP doesn't.

Now they handed Jagdeo a gift. He will take pictures with blacks and howl that this shows that he loves blacks. He will avoid any discussion of why he was accused of being anti black during his era, and why he was unable to prove that he wasn't.

Any man who thinks that he can use para militia gangs, hang out with drug terrorists like Roger Khan and refuse to engage in any dialogue on the issue of ethnic insecurity, when he is accused of fostering this is a monster.

And when blacks were cheering and yelling "finally the slow holocaust is over", this when the PPP lost. That doesn't look like they are OK with Jagdeo.

Do you think that Indians were OK with Burnham when they garlanded him with flowers and welcomed him to Hindu temples?

How exactly can she win an election  when the PNC peaks at 41% and its now clear that the AFC cannot bring in the remaining 10%?

What in her remarks guarantees that the PNC can increase its votes to at least 47%, given that the AFC seems unable to muster its 2006 and 2011 votes?

Please answer without your usual attacks like calling people confused or meandering.

I was on the phone with an AFC top brass earlier today.  They have some plans to rubber band the coalition together and keep power in 2020.  I don’t know if it will work, let’s see!
