In light of an alleged decision taken by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to commence House to House Registration, the People’s Progressive Party Commissioners contended  that the specifics with regards the issue was not discussed and voted on at Tuesday’s Statutory Meeting.

In a 4-3 three vote at the statutory meeting, it was decided that elections cannot be held within 90 days as there was insufficient funds for same. GECOM’s chairman, James Patterson has reportedly voted   with the three PNC Councillors.

However, PPP noted that the time has come for international actions to be taken since GECOM is blatantly ignoring the Constitution of Guyana which stipulates that elections should be held within 90 days following the passage of the No Confidence resolution which means March 19, 2019.

According to the party, GECOM in its refusal to hold elections demonstrated their illogical willingness to tow the Government’s line. In so doing, it has made the Constitution of Guyana subservient to the will of Commission and as such, this should not be the case, the PPP stated.

GECOM’s mandate, as stipulated by the Constitution, clearly states in Article 162 (1) of the Constitution that: “The Elections Commission shall have such functions connected with or relating to the registration of electors or the conduct of elections as are conferred upon it by or under this Constitution or, subject thereto, any Act of Parliament.”

During a protest earlier in the month, Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo has stated that the president should take it upon himself and announce a date for the hosting of elections.

“The legislature has spoken. The judiciary has spoken. The President, over the weekend, seems to believe that none of this matters. And so we have to show him that we are serious about having him respect our Constitution”, Jagdeo stated.

GECOM had given July as a timeline for the hosting of elections but at the same time, it stated that the present voters’ list will expire on April 30. Although the opposition has been calling for elections within the constitutional time frame, the Government claimed that it was up to GECOM’s readiness to host same.

Since the passage of the no confidence resolution, the Guyana Elections Commission has been dragging its feet with respect to elections preparation.

“GECOM has a moral and ethical responsibility to get elections done before March 19. What is before the Commission now is to come up with actions to ensure this. So I don’t know where this thing about July is coming in. There is only one way that date can be extended. And Opposition and Government have to agree by a two-thirds majority”, Jagdeo had stated.

Guyana Elections Commission focus should be on making adequate actions to effect the elections by the designated date in March 2019.

Interesting times ahead.

Cain, I think that this is more that if the PPP/civic wins or does not win the election. It is about the rule of law, the constitution is the foundation of the GUyanese state and what is set out there in. No small matter!

What should eople do in the absence of the law agencies doing anything to curb the violence and seen as consorting with the criminals? It is easy to  say do nothing when you are living safe in North America while innocent Guyanese are victimized.

No government hires a drug kingpin to take care of crime. Where is their hero now dude?

Strange that while the PPP were in office they could not take care of their citizens by using their forces, why is this? Why did the PPP not try their utmost to bring more of their people into the GPF while they were in office all those years? Why did the PPP turn down the assistance that was being provided by the ABC countries? I'll tell you why. They did not give a dam, all they cared about was hiring their own line of criminals and lining their own pockets.

They blocked the DEA and Scotland Yard from helping with the crime situation because they were in cahoots with the drug lords and that would have skinned up their dirty dealings.

Bai whah yuh smokin? The PPP is definitely better than the PNC. No one is saying that they are saints or on any scale like politicians in countries like yours' mine or others. But that are lightyears ahead of the PNC when it comes to political behavior. A politician has one responsibility. To govern when given the opportunity by the voters and to surrender power peacefully when that opportunity ceases. The NCV is a constitutional tool which was legally utilized by the PPP last December. The Coalition government had just one responsibility after the passage of that motion. They had to respectfully begin preparing for early elections. Incidentally, it was this same tool that the APNU/AFC sought to use to shorten a legally elected government led by Ramotar. Nonetheless, Ramotar went ahead and held early elections. The Coalition government is not decent enough to do the same. So yes, when it comes to political etiquette, the PPP is lightyears ahead of the despotic PNC. Now enjoy this number, Hippi.

There will always be Political Tog-o-War, Me PNC is better than your PPP, how can anyone WIN, Never.

We don't need to fall back 5to10 years, let's look at the present situation and see who is being Democratic by following the rule of the land. When Moses said"bring it on" for the NCV and lost, the PNC does not want to accept defeat, they took it to the Chief Justice and lost again and still does not accept defeat, it is at the Appeal court and sure they will lose again. In the mean time GECOM supposed to prepare for Election, and they are finding 100 and one reasons for not having an election, ONLY IN GUYANA. Cain and others would side with the PNC ,simply they hate the PPP, but it's obvious the PPP is doing everything according to the BOOKS, No riots ,looting and killing.  Just think if it was the reverse, Guyana would be in the News for all the wrong reasons.

Which leader of a major political party draped the coffin of a dead criminal? Which political leader said “more fire, slow fire”? which political leader and party illegally held on to the presidency and government for over 20 years? Which political party embraced the criminals who broke out of jail and killed many, including policemen?

The coalition made all these accusations. They have been in power for nearly four years and they still make the accusations but have not laid any charges. Guess why?

That is where the AFC fell short. They should have been content with being chief disrupter until they had grown a bit more.

yes indeed its upsetting that Jagdeo cannot contest on his archaic voter list, filled with many dead and not including many young folks.

Now what is the rush to have an election, aside from the need to ensure that whenever first oil comes Jagdeo can put his paws on it?

If the PPP is so popular what is wrong with holding the election with a clean list?  This haste really makes people wonder.

Is it that Jagdeo is afraid that the longer he waits the more people will see that Irfaan is a buffoon?

Jagdeo is in such a rush to have the elections next month and yet he has NOT selected a PM candidate?
