It appeal to me since the first time I saw it. It was interesting the way the parents despise each other and use that against the lovers and also the caste/language barrier. I find Kamal Hassan very lovable and endearing. The songs helped big time too.

my take would be that at least every decade had at least 5 top movies that are memorable...
some of the golden oldies were great; as Jis desh mein Ganga behti hai, Nagin, Ganga Jumna-film in Bihar w/Bhojpuri, Rani Roopmati, Bhabhi, Kohinoor,Aan,Aah,Barsaat,,,,
but my fave of all times:
Mother India - dharti songs
Sanyasi-one special song
Pakeeza-all songs
Kabhi Kabhi, title song
Ek duje ke liya-tere mere beech mein
too many movies wid too much heart songs.. strongman

Pinky if we were to select the best or those that we think should have made the list any day

Those will be definately in. along with Sangam, Mera Naam Joker, Haathi Mere Saathi, Chotti Bahen, Khandaan, these were all tear jerkers, Ek Phool Do Mali, Dhool Ka Phool, and so many more.

Vijyanthimala was so good in Nagin and the songs, well that was something else.

RQ I GUESS YOU WILL LOVE THIS, HAVE FUN CHOOSING THE FIVE:

IF WE WERE TO LIST THEM BY DECADES AND THE 10 BEST:
MY CHOICE WOULD HAVE TO BE:

Gems from the 50's

1) Babul (1950)

2) Awara (1951)

3) Deedar (1951)

4) Baiju Bawra (1952)

5) Aan (1952)

6) Nagin (1954)

7) Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje (1955)

8) Udan Khatola (1955)

9) Mother India (1957)

10)Choti Bahen (1959)

Will bring 10 from the 60's: oh that will be very hard: As the 60's could have been referred to as the Golden Era
