Seems as though somehow XP Anti-Virus 2011 has invaded my system ... trying to sell my their protection.

I cannot get it off unless I buy their program.

McAfee expires in July.

How do I get rid of the infection?
You have a malware problem The software telling you that you have a problem is the problem. Tell us the name of the program informing you of this infection

Been in serious computing including doing computer forensics, security and defence and never saw a computer with 26 virus/malware. I used to hang out (as part of my job) with hackers and hacking sites/warez places and some of the grimiest backrooms and darknets on the internet and never intercepted more than a few attempt to implant something. The internet is dangerous but any software that tells you that you have 26 malware/trojans/rootkits etc is a fake. I know McAfee did not tell you that nor did Microsoft essentials or any of the commercial packages. You possibly have one malware like spydoctor or antimalware which is misinforming you.

Should not cost you a dime. Most of the difficult ones like antimalware that spaws itself in numerous places can be uprooted with 15 mins of your time.
