Dear Editor,

I note that 8,000 residents from Region 1 (Barima-Waini) benefitted from the $25,000 per household COVID-19 cash relief (“Eight thousand Region One households benefit from $25,000 grant,” SN, 30 September 2020).

I assume from the article that there are 8,000 households in Region 1, since the cash relief is given to households and not to individuals.  According to the 2012 national population census, there were only 4,924 households in Region 1.  Are we to assume that the number of households increased by 3,076 from 2012 to 2020 – that is, by 62.5 percent?

For comparison, the number of households in Region 1 increased from 3,082 in 1980 to 3,271 in 1991, to 4,166 in 2002, and to 4,924 in 2012.  I find a 62.5 percent rise in the number of households in Region 1 from 2012 to 2020 simply incredible.

Yours faithfully,

Ramesh Gampat

The Venezuelans are now residents of Guyana. Guyanese went to North America illegally and later became residents.  What's with people coming to Guyana and wants to stay?

There are lots of Brazilians living in the Rupuruni District.

Giving these illegals immigrants $25,000 and on the other hand shooting dem Coolies who crossed the Canal and migrated from Success to make a home for their families only to be shot by the PPP.

PPP = Punishing Poor People.

Barima-Waini

Region 1

The Barima Waini region gets its name from its two main rivers. The region is mainly Forested Highland, bordered at the north by a narrow strip of Low Coastal Plain. There are 27,643 inhabitants in the region, who are predominantly of Indigenous descent. The main economic activity in the region is mining followed by logging in the highland and agricultural activity. The tropical forest yields many valuable species of hardwood. Region 1 is known for its many beaches and waterways. Though several kilometers of road run through the region, the main means of transportation is by boat. Air transportation is also important to the region.

Looks like the Natives want to take back their land. Increase the population and start your own party. Make Guyana Great Again!! Their slogan will be "no race will replace us".

Over 4000 families migrated to that area. There is one flaw in that statement.  There has to be a decrease in the population at the other Amerindian areas. There isn't any.
