Anyone who is intent on breaking the law should expect the full force of the law to come down on them. For too long people in Guyana have been getting away with blatantly violating its laws. If adults are willing to put their children in harms way it is their fault and not the government's. Children should either be at home or in school. Not on the streets 'protesting'.

Ksazma bhai, how about the PPP folks who encouraged the folks to go and squat prior to the 2015 election?

‘Let’s do this the right way’

-Ali appeals to Success squatters

While hundreds of squatters struggle to stay afloat amidst the deliberate flooding of Success on the East Coast of Demerara by the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo), President Irfaan Ali is urging that they allow his government to develop housing the “right way”.

“My brothers and sisters at Successâ€Ķ we want you to own your homes too; that is why we sent the housing team so many times to see you. We want to help you. We are going to move as fast as possible in this programme but I am appealing to Guyanese let us do it the right way,” he said during his feature address at the opening of the “Dream Realised” Land Title Distribution Ceremony hosted yesterday by the Ministry of Housing and Water at the National Stadium at Providence.

According to Ali, Guyana has to become accustomed to doing things the right way otherwise there will continue to be “communities which are not sustainable “.

He stressed that investing in a squatter settlement will bring no returns and once again urged that citizens spend their money in structured housing schemes.

“If you invest $5 million in a squatter settlement there is no value because you cannot use it as collateral. If you invest it in a structured scheme there is value. You can capitalize that sometimes for more than $5 million, more than $7 million or $8 million,” Ali advised.

GuySuCo has been at loggerheads for weeks with the squatters who refuse to move from land the company says is to be used for cane cultivation.

Confrontations between police and the residents have seen several persons including women and children injured when pellets were fired on two occasions.

Since Wednesday the company started the process of flooding the land using a large pump.

When this newspaper visited the site on Thursday, the water had inundated the homes which were on low-lying plots and starting to affect those which were slightly above the ground. Houses on higher ground were not touched by the water but materials purchased were washed away or soaked. There was some relief for the squatters on Thursday when the pump being used to flood the area experienced mechanical difficulties and the water which they feared would continue to rise started receding.

Residents explained that prior to releasing the water into the area, GuySuCo had used an excavator to dig a series of drains to allow the flood to completely cover the occupied area.

Questions have been raised as to why the former APNU+AFC government made no arrangements to regularise these squatters and to offer them house lots prior to August 2nd.  Prior to acceding office on August 2nd, the PPP/C had made clear that it would be reopening shuttered estates. The lands at Success are to be used for cane farming.

Cops say rounds were fired at suspects in attack on GuySuCo guards

Police say rounds were discharged at Success, East Coast Demerara squatters who were suspected on Thursday of trying to rob Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) guards in an attack.

Police Commander of Region 4(C) Senior Superintendent Khali Pareshram yesterday told Stabroek News that following a report made concerning an attempt to rob the GuySuCo guards on Thursday, three squatters were helping with investigations. The suspects have since been released he said.

According to the police, the GuySuCo employees were robbed during a confrontation in a tent that was set up. It has been reported that they were ambushed and injured by the squatters who were armed with cutlasses. Pareshram also said that the police discharged rounds at the suspects.

Water continuing to rise at the Success squatting area

However, when this newspaper visited the area, the squatters claimed that the police opened fire at them without warning. They also said that there was no criminal activity involved. Instead they said that the excavators being used to dig drainage for the water that is flooding the land, a GuySuCo operation, were breaking down their homes. A woman related that because the low budget tents used as homes were being broken down by the excavators, the squatters made attempts to block the excavators from moving further and that was then the police discharged rounds of pellets at them.

Flooded

On Thursday when this newspaper visited, many persons were leaving to get treatment for their injuries while others said that they were leaving for good. But during yesterday’s visit, many persons could still be seen occupying the land even though many homes were flooded and the water appeared to be still rising. The pump being used to flood the area through the dam was not in use but was being guarded by heavily armed police officers.

Commenting on the scene from the day before, the squatters referred to the behaviour of the police as “lawlessness.” A man whose home was flooded by the water said that he had to send his children away after the police opened fire. Another showed injuries on his right foot which he received from the pellets. While a man named Carl complained that his house was broken down by the excavator and accused GuySuCo of removing his household equipment after the house was devastated. He said that his house was not the only house broken down and showed this newspaper the empty plot of land where his home used to be. He said that the houses next to his were also demolished. The material from those houses were left on the plots but Carl’s was gone. He insists that he was not home when it happened which the reason why the material was removed.

The squatters were told to vacate the land but they remain because they say they have nowhere else to go and claim that they were promised that land would be allocated to them. However, this has not happened and due to the situation at Success one of the squatters yesterday said that he went to the “Dream Realised” Land Title Distribution Ceremony held by the Ministry of Housing and Water at the stadium yesterday. However, he said that attending the event was a “waste of time”. He revealed that if he had known it would be the same “run around business,” he never would have attended it. He like many others squatting in the area said that he applied for land before and is still waiting for assistance hence he will continue to occupy a spot in the squatting area.

In order to combat crime that is centrally directed by the PNC, I asked the President to put 10,000 police officers on patrol.

We need to eradicate crime in order to make the country safe from hooligans. Rochelle said that it is not over yet. Seigs said that coolies will get what they deserve.

I say, "if you do the crime you do the time".

What about the people who squatted at Rose Hall and Gangaram, Canje and then those at Leonora? Did the PPP not moved in fast to regularize them?

Mitwah

The PPP government is doing the right thing. The PNC claims to have the ears of nearly 50% of the population. They should stop all their other unbeneficial activities and speak to those people to stop breaking existing laws and allow the government to govern. If some people want to stand in the way of law and order, that is their choice.

The squatting BUMS fired shots and damage the water pumps. I can see why some of you sympathetic to these land grabbers/thief, maybe you did the same in your days and got away with it.  Well, this is Law and Order Time, the Lawlessness Must STOP.

When police act on criminals, it's called Police State. The PNC encouraged this thieving of state land, the land is for cane cultivation. So the PNC shut the Estates to give land to Squatters? These are all LAZY not working BUMS, many don't live there but just want to THIEF other people land.

If they don't obey the law, they face the consequences.

Who in the PPP ordered the police to shoot?

Probably Benn .

Those parents are too cowardly to stand in front of the line.

The PPP didn't order anybody to shoot.  The COP is in charge of upholding the law.  The PNC is doing a good job terrorizing the country just like they did during Jagseo's 12 1/2 years of running the country.

Today the Police say the light at the end of the tunnel.  The light is called oil and gas revenue.  They know that better days are coming.

Stop criticizing the PPP. Find another hubby.

Bruk down Benn at it again, jus like in de last PPP government.  Displacing vendors and shooting at squatting children. The PPP is getting desperate to control the poor people, instead of helping them.

Look at them-Benn and fake bishop Edghill with a bunch of officers parading like clowns in a circus harassing people.  If the stalls are illegally located then there is a process to prosecute owners.  What these clowns are doing is displaying their power rather than using the legal system to make it untenable for people to erect illegal stalls.  This is not going to end well.

The PNC had 5 1/2 years to make it right but didn't.

With all the crimes being committed by the PNC followers, Guyana will need over 10,000 more police officers to eradicate crime in Georgetown alone.
