Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy being presented with the award and a certificate by representatives from the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) at his Brickdam office.

Guyana’s unwavering efforts at advancing the delivery of quality healthcare across the country has been duly rewarded with the distinguished Sérgio Arouca Award for Excellence for Guyana’s outstanding performance in Universal Health Care by the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO).

The award was accepted by Director of the Young Adult Health and Wellness Unit, Dr. Marcia Paltoo for the Health Ministry’s Integrated Management of Adolescent and Adult Illness (IMAI) Programme at PAHO’s 50th Directing Council in Washington, United States (US).

However, a formal handover ceremony was today held where Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy received a token of appreciation and a certificate.

Minister Ramsammy said Guyana is grateful for the award since it signifies that the works being carried out by health care personnel is being recognised internationally and, said that IMAI’s efforts to deliver high-quality health services and improved care and treatment of illnesses in a context of limited resources is indeed laudable.

IMAI does not only focus on treating acute illnesses, but on the management and prevention of chronic diseases as well. It also fits into existing services so that the health system can function more efficiently.

“I want to thank the PAHO foundation for recognising the hard work of the health workers in Guyana, we are very particularly grateful since healthcare workers have and continue to do a great job for the citizens,” the Health Minister said.

As a result of many training programmes initiated over the years, health workers have been able to significantly improve on the way they perform their functions; enabling Guyanese citizens access to more efficient services.

Notably, there has significant progress in maternal health, HIV and chronic illnesses among many other public health diseases, leading to an increase in the life expectancy rate.

IMAI operates under the Disease Control Programme of the Ministry of Health and has been implemented in at least 246 health posts and health centers covering more than 90 percent of the population.

Guyana will soon get an award for being the richest country in the hemisphere and also get one for being the most democratic.

Go and share this with all the people sleeping pun 2 bed in GPHC and see what they think.

Lets ask all the relatives of the folks who experienced maternal deaths in Guyana and lets see how they feel about this award.
