Steve Bacchus is champion

The Guyana Draughts Association 51st Independence Anniversary tournament concluded last Sunday at the National Gymnasium.
Games were contested for the senior Draughts players along with four qualifiers from the B competition.
The games were keenly contested as players did brain battle late into the evening. The first to finish their five rounds was Jiaram with a comfortable 12 points; a comfortable lead over his opponents. But the unexpected was in store as Ulric Brathwaite mustered 7 points over Michael Francis and Navin Meghbarran to move from 6 to 14 points, while Steve Bacchus gained 3 points over Francis in his last match to move from 10 to 13 points. A tie breaker saw Bacchus emerging the winner, while Brathwaite took the second place. Jiaram had to settle for the third position, while Davanand Persaud from Tuschen East Bank Essequibo with 10 points occupied the fourth place.
Meanwhile, the previous action involving the B players saw Ulric Brathwaite emerging the winner. This triumph for Brathwaite is the second consecutive win for him in the category and he now has been promoted to the A class. He is one of the longest Draughts players, who struggled over the years to reach this level. In the second position was Navin Meghbarran, followed by Davanand Persaud and Michael Francis who got a walk over from Lyndon Heywood in a fourth place tiebreaker match.
The GDA would like to thank Noble House Seafoods for being the major sponsor in this event, the Guyana Beverage Inc. for refreshments and Uniparts who chipped in.
Trophies were awarded to all the winners in the two categories.
