Guyana and the Mexican Government have inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU) which will ensure a permanent mechanism for dialogue on matters of common interest. Foreign Affairs Minister Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett also announced that Guyana will be granting five year multiple entry visas to Mexicans who are involved in the area of business and tourism.

The memorandum of understanding seeks to establish consultative mechanism on matters of common interest such as environmental, cultural and political. Addressing the signing ceremony, Minister carolyn Rodrigues Birkett noted that the relations between the two countries were taken to a higher level with the establishment of an embassy here in 2009.

She pointed to the fact that the two countries have signed several agreements since the establishment of bilateral in March 1973. Reference was also made to Mexico’s decision to review the issuance of visas to Guyanese.

“ They have issued unilaterally two years visas for Guyana and what I mean when I say unilateral is that Mexico did that without Guyana having to do the same thing but we felt that it was very important when ambassador told us of this initiative by the Mexican government that we need to do something similar here” Minister Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett said.

Guyana will also be granting five years multiple entry Visa for Mexicans involved in the business and tourism industry and two years for trans-migrants. Minister Birkett alluded to the scholarships that Guyana has received from Mexico and the common views that the two countries share on matters such as agriculture and climate change among others.

Meanwhile, Mexican Ambassador to Guyana Fernando Sandoval echoed Minister Rodrigues Sentiments. “It aims to facilitate the mutual understanding, its main goal is to institutionalize constructive and permanent dialogue between Mexico and Guyana which leads to a longer relationship between people and Governments”
