The GTT National Indoor hockey tournament is being served as a warm up for the monumental Pan-American Cups Hockey Championships that will be hosted in Guyana for the first time next month and the national teams are getting in tune with good wins against the top clubs of the country. On Tuesday evening, night 2 of the 14thedition of GTT Indoor Hockey Championships, the national men’s green and black, along with the ladies all secured good wins against their opposition.
The ladies were up against a tricky Antonio’s Grille Hikers veteran side, but they overcame their opponents in a commanding 8-2 victory led by 2 field goals each from the athletic Aliyah Gordon and versatile Tricia Woodroofe. Gordon got the ball rolling after intercepting a Hiker’s pass with their D to opening the scoring in the 1st minute of the match up before completing her double in the 8th minute. Marzana Fiedtkou (5th minute), Latacia Chung (27th minute), along with Hiker’s ladies duo Maria Munroe (29th minute) and Nicole Eastman (30th minute) all got on the score sheet in the national Ladies dominating victory over Hikers veteran men’s side in the 40-minute match.
Robert Fernandes (16th minute) and George Melville (24th minute) were the goal scorers for Hikers.
The National Men’s Blacks made very light work of Saints Hockey Club in a devastating 11-0 victory that was capped off with a 9-goal second half burst. Robert France and Jamarj Assanah both smashed in 4 goals each in the lopsided win, while Andrew Stuart scored a double and Ryan Branford notched up one goal to complete the rout.
Aroydy Branford scored a second half double to see the Men’s National Green ease past Old Fort titans 5-3 after 40 minutes of competitive hockey.
At half time the score stood 1-all with goals from veteran John Abrahams in the 6th minute following a penalty corner before Green’s skipper Aderemi Simon equalized in the 9th minute. After the half-time break the double from Branford and one each from Jason Dos Santos and Kevin Spencer were enough to trump goals from Ascofu Simon and Abrahams’ second successful penalty corner strike.
The other results of the night saw GCC Pitbulls defeating Hikers 5-1, GCC Spartans drawing 1-1 with the ever improving Old Fort Shooting Stars in the women’s division, while Saints Hockey Club lost to Saint Stanislaus Hockey Club 5-3 and Pepsi Hikers suffered a demoralizing 8-1 defeat at the hands of Bounty GCC.
