Grove police pickup crashes into two cars after “chase”

May 28, 2019 News, https://www.kaieteurnewsonline...wo-cars-after-chase/

A police pickup from the Grove Police Station, East Bank Demerara, suffered significant damage yesterday after crashing into two cars along the Diamond Access Road.

According to residents, the early morning incident involving the Tunland pickup, PWW 5428, occurred at the corner of 7th Avenue.

The police pickup crashed into a Toyota wagon and what appeared to be a Toyota 192.

Police ranks from the pickup claimed that they were chasing a vehicle when they were “braced” off the road.

The residents are questioning who will pay compensation. (Guyanese Critic photos)

Interesting question.

According to the announcement in the newspapers by Khemraj Ramjattan, police officers who damage their vehicles must personally pay for the damages.

Ranks will pay for vehicles they damage – Ramjattan

-as 56 pickups rolled out for Xmas patrols

The days of daredevil driving may be over for ranks from the Guyana Police Force.

That’s because of new Force regulations that will result in policemen having to foot the bill for repairs to the vehicles they damage through reckless use.

Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan, issued this warning yesterday, while handing over 56 brand-new pickups, to the Guyana Police Force.

Absolute nonsense. The vehicles should be covered by insurance issued to the government/GPF. How are the ranks supposed to perform their duties properly? Who will want to risk damaging a vehicle chasing criminals or responding to a crime expeditiously? Ramjattan continues to show how much of an idiot he is and how much he is out of his element.

He mentioned they should pay for damage via "reckless use". There had been a spate of damage to police vehicle through joy riding and personal business use by pnc police.

Agreed on the joy riding and personal business use. Who decides what's reckless?

Just like they do in the US, call in to report you are in pursuit, video cams etc.  Don't give them the chance to crash then later claim they were in pursuit of criminals. There will be a audit trail to back up their stories.
