Greetings to the sons and daughters of Guyana and abroad. Guyana has come a long way since 1992, but yet some assume much has not been done under the current administration. That is because our adversaries are too preoccupied with their own special interest that they failed to see the beauty of Guyana present status that surrounds them. The Ramotar's administration will create a new and invigorating force to reckon with every daunting issue facing our nation and country. Together, we shall make Guyana a safer state by irradiate crime as we know it. We will take examples from the cornerstone of our founding father to provide for the poor and working middle class. Together, we will restore the lost dignity of our people. We will provide equal right, opportunity and justice for all and bridge the ethnic divide of the races. Once again, we can all be proud of Guyana, a nation of higher aspiration and opportunity for all to work and live in peace and harmony. Guyana is one people, one nation and one destiny with a true leader who can make all things possible.

They government are committed to continuing that work and they will continue that work over the next five years under the presidency of Donald Ramoutar the PPP/C is working everyday day and night to try to make a difference to the people of Guyana

Woe is us that we may look on this troll and see in him a reflection of hope! This bloody man look as though Jagdeo wound him up and pressed the start button. This automaton inspires no hope, no sense of elation, no anticipation of better. The only thing that comes to my mind when I see these fpul parasites is the enraged refrain of Cromwell at the rump parliament...."go, get you gone". To that most Guyanese would say a big amen!

If the distinguished gentlemen made way to support Mr. Ramotar's candidacy and show party unity, I am sure he will reach out to them.
This is funny "If the ... gentlemen made way to support Mr. Ramotar's... he will reach out to them. It speaks exactly to the oligarchic stance of the PPP. "We will do as you please and unless you bend the knees to us, you get no help" Moses is the one screwed!

Nothing about this man will make him whole. He squatted on two boards; OMAI and GUYSUCO and in the process became the proverbial patrician. Meanwhile, OMAI took millions of oz of gold from our land leaving over a million gallons of toxic sludge in the Essequibo and gashes in the land scape and they insist they made no profit in 20 years! And the crippled 300 million sugar plant at Skeldon stands as a monument to his failure of his second charge.

He also give us the finger with his daughter and sons implanted parasitically at the teat of the state so what is redeeming about him except he be gone?

Nobody is screwed or will be screwed. We can't let our personal beliefs get the better of us. We can all make feasible assumptions that cannot hold true of what will actually happen.

Dude, our democracy will not be purchased with the price of chains on our people ( to steal from Patrick Henry). He is self actualized not people affirmed. No one selected him, no legacy of excellence is in his past and his visage is that of a fatted frog and reminds us of the bloated politburo pigs on the Kremlin during the May day parade! He is not of our world or our times and is not what we want in our future! He smells of vice!

School cleaners protest US$79 salary
Written by Denis Scott Chabrol Thursday, 01 September 2011 12:11

Several government-employed sweeper cleaners on Thursday took their plight of lowly-paid salaries- half the minimum wage- in front of the Ministry of Finance. Under the umbrella of the Alliance For Change (AFC), the female-dominated picketers also chanted slogans, calling for better pay.

Miriam Fordyce, who is a sweeper-cleaner at Hopetown Nursery School, West Coast Berbice for more than 10 years, said she experiences great difficulty surviving on GUY$15,800 (US$79) per month. The party noted that the minimum wage is $32,207 (US$161), an amount that the cleaners are not being paid. Depending on assistance from her husband and other persons, the mother of five children said she is also not entitled to benefits from the National Insurance Scheme (NIS). “We don’t pay NIS so if you are sick, you cannot carry in sick leave, I feel bad because we are not getting any benefit if you sick,” she told Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com).

Rushell Britton,34, of Hopetown Primary School is in a similar plight, saying that she is often forced to borrow to sustain herself and her three children. “Sometimes things rough with the children, sometimes I borrowing, borrowing when I get the money all got to pay back in debt. I ain’t seeing my way,” she told Demerara Waves Online News.

Fordyce and Britton were among those who picketed for fatter pay packets outside the Finance Ministry. While chanting “Reduce Jagdeo pension and pay the sweeper-cleaners their money,”, “Increase salary for sweeper cleaner, less pension for Jagdeo,” and “Where is the democracy in the distribution of wealth,” they also held placards. The slogans on the placards included “AFC says school cleaners are human beings too,” “AFC says school cleaners provide a valuable service too,” “Where is the concern for the working class,” “AFC says $15,000 per month a national disgrace” and “AFC says school cleaners deserve a decent wage,”

The AFC claims it has seen a directive by the Finance Ministry to the Regional Democratic Councils that that sweeper cleaners must be considered contract service providers and not as public servants and so they cannot be paid the minimum wage. “The AFC submits that there is a strong element of criminality associated with such directive,” said the party, adding that many of the sweeper cleaners have been working for at least 10 years. The party noted that several schools have been asking parents to contribute monies to help pay that category of workers more. “It is debasing and dehumanizing for persons to work for less than a minimum wage,” said party presidential candidate, Khemraj Ramjattan from the picket line.

THE Education Ministry, in observance of Education Month, has planned a list of activities that will aid in advancing the efforts of the ministry in ensuring productive citizens with the ability to aid the country’s modernization thrust. The activities run from September 1 to October 5 under the theme “Transforming Guyana through Science and Technology in Education.” The selection of this theme is important since it will have tremendous impact on the transformation of Guyana.
Education Minister, Shaik Baksh noted that this year the ministry is seeking to highlight the work of the education sector in the promotion of science in the school system and this includes Technical and Vocational Education Training centres, Cyril Potter College of Education and the University of Guyana, in particular. The latter has benefited from a US$10M loan from the World Bank to support science and technology, at the tertiary level.

Activities for education month will commence with a rally starting at Parade Ground and ending at Queen’s College where the minister will address the gathering that will consist of key stakeholders in the education sector- Parent Teachers’ Associations, School Boards, teachers, students, Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) officials and other sister ministries.

Minister Baksh pointed out that another major event is the science and technology fair and symposium which will be held on September 16 at the Ministry’s Sports Complex on Carifesta Avenue. This exhibition is expected to have 50 booths set-up by both the private and public sectors and will see scientific and technological displays. The symposium will have key persons in the science and technology field from the University of Guyana, Education Ministry and private sector making presentations.

Within the month there are two international days, namely, ‘International Literacy Day’ which will be celebrated on September 8, throughout the regions, where reading tents will be set-up and educators will be speaking on literacy development and, ‘International Teachers’ Day’ on October 5, when Minister Baksh, Chief Education Officer Olato Sam and GTU President Colin Bynoe will speak on the role of teachers in the education system.
Assistant Chief Education Officer Melcita Bovell reiterated that, over the last few years, focus has been placed on literacy. As such, apart from the reading tents, book clubs and book quizzes will be launched at the Providence Primary School on September 5.
Additionally, GT&T is coming on board with a number of other partners to facilitate a national spelling bee competition that engages all Grade 5 students, an activity that will be held at the Theatre Guild on September 12.

She noted that students who have attained 98% and more for school attendance will be awarded for their efforts. This is the third year this award is being issued, and each year there has been a growing number of students who are attending school more regularly.

Other activities include the JOF Haynes’ debate, sports encounter, GUYAID essay competition, steel pan showcase and school garden competition at the nursery, primary and secondary levels and are in tandem with the President’s food security thrust. It will be judged both regionally and nationally and will instil in students the importance of tilling the land.

The month will end on October 5 with a national award ceremony where all outstanding students who wrote the National Grade Six Assessment, Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC), Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) and Guyana Technical Education Examination (GTEE) will be awarded. Albert, could you please describe the prosperity that we can tell Black Bush Polder youth, who are considering taking their own life.
They are presently into hardcore alcohol and drugs, the next stage is completely lost of hope and will commit suicide.
What prosperity do we tell them Albert?
Tola
albert, so why are you all only paying sweeper/cleaners, who are mainly women, and many are single parents, who ensure a proper teaching environment in our schools a mere $15,800 a month when Gail Texeira, a Presidential advisor, is paid G$880,000 per month, or US$145 per day, and Odinga Lumumba, another advisor is paid G$660,000 per month or US$110 per day? For purely propaganda work, Dr Randy Persaud was reputed to have been paid US$10,000 per month plus benefits and allowances for the year he was here, and Dr Misir is reputed to be paid the same for the two jobs he holds, totalling some US$220,000 per year.

Further, the pension package of the President and Opposition Leader is some $4.5 million a month, or US$750 a day, when the working person's old age pension is $7,500 a month or US$1.25 per day - and these people have to attain the age of 60, while the President and Opposition Leader get theirs upon demitting office regardless of age.

Elections are around the corner and it is during this season that many seek to resurrect their political life. Of course, these periodic, arm chair experts and failed politicians will be making many critical evaluations of the past 5 years and will be promising to do so much should they themselves be given a ‘5 year’ but in the end it is up to the Guyanese voting population to make a proper assessment of who or which political party is better equipped to take them forward and which party has a record of fulfilling promises. On this note I will outline a few ongoing efforts as well as promises fulfilled by the PPP/C since they came into office

1. It is under the PPP/C that Guyana attained the rank of one of the highest developing countries in the Education Index of the United Nations Human Development Report. Equitable access to free education from nursery through secondary is a major reason for Guyana’s estimated literacy rate of 96%, one of the highest in the Western Hemisphere during this time. The education sector continues to receive the largest chunk of the National Budget, with allocation this year being $24.3B, an increase of $2.5B. A US$5.1M Guyana Improvement Teacher Education Project was initiated which further ensures that Guyana’s children receive the best possible education. 70 secondary schools are to be equipped with modern IT labs by September of this year and this will complement Guyana’s first learning channel which was launched in April of this year.

2. It is under the PPP/C that budgetary allocations to the security sector increased from $13M in 1992 to $1.9B IN 2011. It is also under the rule of the PPP/C that the Citizen Security Programme, the aim of which is to create safer neighbourhoods, came into being. One component of this initiative saw the successful completion of the Comprehensive Training Programme in 2009 by 308 police officers. This programme equipped them with the requisite skills to train new recruits and other ranks in modern policing techniques. An Integrated Crime Information System(ICIS) for the force is also being developed, the design of which is to enable policy makers and law enforcement agencies to identify crime trends, examine their causes and devise objective solutions to combat them. The construction of a state-of-the-art Forensic Laboratory has already begun and this will complement other measures such as the installation of Close Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV) in and around the capital city which is expected to enable prompt response by police patrol squads.

3. Ensuring that adequate healthcare is accessible to the entire population regardless of the location, though at times challenging, is yet another one of the fulfilled promises of the PPP/C. Residents in remote and outlying areas can now boast of having access to basic healthcare through the construction of health huts and health centers and the placement of trained medical personnel to man these centers. There have been major improvements to the Georgetown Public Hospital which now allows it to offer advanced services in many areas including surgeries. Apart from highly trained medical practitioners being at the facility, groups of specialist doctors now visit the institution from time to time carrying out surgeries including kidney transplants and heart surgeries in the process. Health facilities were also constructed in Linden, Mabaruma, Lethem, New Amsterdam, Diamond East Bank Demerara , Port Mourant, Mahaicony, Leonora and Suddie, just to name a few.

Space and time constraint only allows me to delve into the 3 areas above but there’s more than enough out there for readers to get a view of the points being raised. While the ears and eyes of the Guyanese public is being bombarded with sensationalism and misrepresentation development is taking place everywhere. And this is evident when one visits any of the city’s streets or any of the many new housing schemes. All is not perfect but there are those who for reasons of selfishness would want us to believe that nothing at all has been done. These bitter folks have their individual grouses and this is evident in their vitriolic and often outlandish pronouncements. While preaching ‘change’ etc they exhibit signs of the ‘them’ v/s ‘us’ mentality.
