GHAZAL EXTRAORDINAIRE: ABIDA PARVEEN:

GHAZALS OF HEER BY ABIDA PARVEEN:

Heer Ranjha is one of the four popular tragic romances of the Punjab and Sindh. The other three are Mirza Sahiba, Sassi Punnun and Sohni Mahiwal. There are several poetic narrations of the story, the most famous being 'Heer' by Waris Shah written in 1766. It tells the story of the love of Heer and her lover Ranjha. Well-known poetic narrations have also been written by Damodar Das Arora, Mukbaz and Ahmed Gujjar, among others.

If one is really engrossed in the story then the renditions of the Ghazals by Abida Parveen can actually cause tears for the tragedy of Heer Ranjha:

Since we are featuring Abida, thought it best to include these, amongs't her memorable work of ghazals.

GHAZAL EXTRAORDINAIRE: ABIDA PARVEEN:

Raqs-E-Bismil ("Dance of the Wounded") holds a special significance in Parveen's career. Firstly, a release through the major record label from India confirmed wider reach in the Indian subcontinent as opposed to earlier, haphazardly released albums. Secondly, rather than dedicating an album to one particular poet; as Parveen had done quite frequently earlier; Raqs-E-Bismil witnesses Parveen singing to the poetry of various poets. With three songs on the word by Hazarat Shah Niaz and one each by poets Asghar Gondvi ("Zaahid Ne"), Maulana Hasrat Mohani ("Roshan Jamal-E-Yaar"), Hazrat Zaheen Shah Taaji ("Ji Chahe"), and Jigar Moradbadi ("Jalwa Ba Qadra"), Parveen makes sure to pick her favorite poetry for this album. More importantly, due to the seemingly important stature of this release, she sticks to the Kafi genre of singing without straying to other extremes and thus brings out an album that displays her at her very best.

Raqs-e-Bismil
by Saman Zobayr

Abida Parveen displays her magic once more, this time under Muzaffar Ali's baton. A film-maker, a poet, an artist, a music-lover, Muzaffar Ali with his lilting and soul touching compositions and Abida Parveen with her power-packed voice come together to give melody and voice to ghazals chosen celestially from myriad poets.

The album Raqs-e-Bismil (Dance of the Wounded), inspired by the couplets of Rumi is a collection of Sufi ghazals sung in the haunting voice of Abida Parveen. Brilliant poets such as Hazrat Shah Niaz, Asghar Gondvi, Hasrat Mohani, Hazrat Zaheen Shah Taaji, and Jigar Moradabadi wrote these magical ghazals. This presentation from Music Today is indeed for the connoisseur.

Raqs-e-Bismil
by Saman Zobayr

Today, Abida Parveen is the most famous exponent of Urdu ghazals, Punjabi kafees and regional folk songs. Her voice with its sheer strength and depth transports listeners into a world of spiritual ecstasy. Because of her choice of repertoire, many people tend to describe her as a successor to the late Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. But she's different on two counts – she has a presentation style of her own, and she doesn't involve herself in experimentation and crossover ventures.

Lyrics: Mirza Ghalib

11) IBN E MARIYAM HUAA KARE KOII:

ibn-e-mariyam huaa kare koii
Somebody please become the son of Virgin Mary
mere dukh kii davaa kare koii
Give me relief from my pain, someone

Ghalib, with his mischievous style, is calling upon a Jesus-like person to help him in his misery. Jesus could bring the dead back to life, but how could he cure someone of love-sickness, for which death may indeed be the cure?

shuraa-o-aa_iin par madaar sahii
it is true that we live by the rule of law
aise qaatil kaa kyaa kare koii
but how can you punish one who kills without killing?

chaal jaise ka.Dii kamaa.N kaa tiir
her walk, which pierces my heart like a sharp arrow
dil me.n aise ke jaa kare koii
how can you make yourself a place in the heart of someone like that?

baat par vaa.N zubaan kaTatii hai
if you speak in front of her, your tongue is cut off
vo kahe.n aur sunaa kare koii
she speaks, and all you can do is listen

bak rahaa huu.N junuu.N me.n kyaa kyaa kuchh
I am prattling in my ecstasy,
kuchh na samajhe Khudaa kare koii
God willing, no one has caught on about my secret love

na suno gar buraa kahe koii
do not listen if someone speaks evil, and
na kaho gar buraa kare koii
say nothing is someone does evil

rok lo gar Galat chale koii
stop someone if he treads the wrong path, and
baKhsh do gar Khata kare koii
forgive him if he makes a mistake

kaun hai jo nahii.n hai haajatama.nd
there is no one without their own needs,
kisakii haajat ravaa kare koii
whose needs would someone satisfy?

(it is not possible to please everyone, and it is difficult to choose)

kyaa kiyaa Khizr ne sika.ndar se
Look what Khizr did for Sikander,
ab kise rahanumaa kare koii
how can anyone give advice to others now?

[Khizr was the man who showed Alexander the Great the fountain of youth. When Alexander went to it, he found many old people lying about near the fountain, and he returned without taking a drink.]

jab tavaqqo hii uTh gayii "Ghalib"
when there is no expectation of an answer,
kyo.n kisii kaa gilaa kare koii
why would anyone bother to complain?

The background music in Raqs-e-Bismil, which makes adroit use of both South Asian instruments such as sarangi, rabab, sarod, and western keyboards, is truly awesome and lifts the album above the level of the ordinary and worldly. You see the power of skilful repetition of musical phrases in the background score of the ghazal Roshan jamaal- e- yaar. Abida Parveen sings with unflinching involvement. Like Begum Akhtar who would create an entire Lucknow with one couplet, Parveen creates a unique atmosphere of devotion with every line she chants. In the ghazal Ishq mein tere, her voice soars with spiritual zeal and reveals her expertise in classical music.

The idiom of these ghazals is also the expression of highest love-poetry. There is no questioning that the merit of this poetry drips with beauty. The inlay cover of this CD provides not only the lyrics, but also their English translations of Urdu ghazals.

Almost every couplet is a gem; take the first ghazal - Yaar ko humne ja ba ja dekha, kahin zaahir kahin chhupa dekha by Hazrat Shah Niaz. Or the couplet from Ishq mein tere, which is - Aql ke madrase se uth, ishq ke maikade mein aa/ Jaam e fanaa o bekhudi, ab to piya jo ho so ho. Again listen to the one by Jigar Moradabadi, Jalwa ba qadre zarf e nazar dekhte rahe / Kya dekhte ham unko, magar dekhte rahe.

In this music of love and undiluted ecstasy, there is also a terrible, almost palpable sadness that makes one want to cry. Is it because surrender means giving up something you have held on to dearly? Can there be a completely happy surrender? Will there always be a bleeding point of pain in it? In any case, the compelling nature of this music cannot be negated. This is a must-listen for any music lover, to savor the taste of Sufi music.

DIL HI TO HAI: MP 3

Thought I would send in a couple of improvements.

Dil hii to hai na sang-o-khisht, dard se bhar na aaye kyuun
It is just a heart, not stone or brick, why would it not feel the pain?
Royenge ham hazaar baar, koii hamen sataaye kyuun
I shall cry a thousand times, why should anyone tease me?

Dair nahiin haram nahiin dar nahiin aastaan nahiin
There is no place for me, no mosque, temple, nor a doorway or shrine
Baithe hain rahaguzar pe ham ghair hamen uthaaye kyuun
so I sit and wait for her by the roadside, why should anyone rouse me??

Dil hii to hai na sang-o-khisht, dard se bhar na aaye kyuun
It is just a heart, not stone or brick, why would it not feel the pain?
Royenge ham hazaar baar koii hamen sataaye kyuun
I shall cry a thousand times, why should anyone tease me?

Haan vo nahiin khudaa parast, jaao vo bevafaa sahii
Yes, she is not pious, granted she is unfaithful
Jisako ho diin-o-dil aziiz, usakii galii men jaaye kyuun
Those who hold their religion and their hearts dear should stay away from her

Dil hii to hai na sang-o-khisht, dard se bhar na aaye kyuun
It is just a heart, not stone or brick, why would it not feel the pain?
Royenge ham hazaar baar koii hamen sataaye kyuun
I shall cry a thousand times, why should anyone tease me?

Qaid-e-hayaat-o-band-e-gham asl men donon ek hain
imprisoned in life, or bound in sorrow, it is really the same thing
Maut se pahale aadamii gham se najaat paaye kyuun
how can you be free from sorrow before you leave this life?

Dil hii to hai na sang-o-khisht, dard se bhar na aaye kyuun
It is just a heart, not stone or brick, why would it not feel the pain?
Royenge ham hazaar baar koii hamen sataaye kyuun
I shall cry a thousand times, why should anyone tease me?

Ghalib e khasta ke baghair kaun se kaam band hain
Without the wretched "Ghalib" has anything been stopped?
Roiye zaar zaar kyaa, kiijiye haaye haaye kyuun
What then is the need to cry? why beat your chest in lament?

Dil hii to hai na sang-o-khisht, dard se bhar na aaye kyuun
It is just a heart, not stone or brick, why would it not feel the pain?
Royenge ham hazaar baar, koii hamen sataaye kyuun
I shall cry a thousand times, why should anyone tease me?

IN THE REALMS OF HAPPINESS Abida Parveen gives a peek in to her mind. Photo: V.V. Krishnan

Traffic jams are nothing new in New Delhi. Honking cars, smoke in the air, and irate pedestrians. This jam was different though. People did not seem to be losing their temper as much. It seemed okay to wait a while. A surprised resident of the Humayun's Tomb area asked a policeman about the untimely rush that was not allowing him to park his car in front of his own house at 11.30 p.m. The rush, as also the magic, was all thanks to Abida Parveen. Her appearances at Jahan-e-Khusrau, the annual festival organised by Delhi Tourism along with the Rumi Foundation, are a regular feature in the Capital now, but that does not dim the anticipation. And the Sufi singer from Pakistan, beloved of Indians, never disappoints.

"I enjoyed singing before the Delhi crowd," she smiles. It is a smile full of spontaneous joy. Whereas often her half-closed eyes, the down-turned face, the strands of hair that fall unbidden and unnoticed across it, give the impression of someone completely lost in the realms of thought, she is simultaneously aware of the world around her.

As usual the festival offered a platform to a spectrum of performers. If there was the Rumi group from Turkey, the list also included pop king Daler Mehndi, whose name came as a surprise to some. "It is the right of every artiste to study the kalam bequeathed to us by the veterans of the faith (buzurgaan-e-din). And an artiste should not be known by just one kalam, nor just one type of music. Daler Mehndi presented some very good verses."

Abida's name is inextricable from the Jahan-e-Khusrau festival. "It is a place one always learns something new. And whenever I come, I attempt to present something new and different."

This time one of her most popular presentations was the verse "Jin nayanan mein nayan". It came to her in an unexpected way. "You don't watch television?" She seems surprised. "Surely you must watch `Antakshari'! Once when I was watching `Antakshari', the host - he sings very well - sang this sher. I found it so beautiful, I called him up from Islamabad. I told him, `Aap ne to quayamat dhaadi!' He gave me the complete verse."

`A radiation'

Once a kalam takes hold of you, says the singer, whose throat often catches with emotion as she speaks of the subject that has enveloped her being, it does not take leave of you. The sufi kalam is "a visual in itself," she explains.

People take from it what is appropriate for them. "Sufi music includes classical music as well as dohas and such. We take the doha, find its essence and set it to music. It is not the work of a day. I am immersed in it always."

She may see her art as a form of devotion, but audiences are of all types. "Apne aap mein alau jalana padta hai. (The flame must burn within the heart.) Only He can make it happen. We try to reach His doorstep. And consider the audience as the manifestation of Khuda."

Everyone however may not have such unsullied faith. "Even if one or two understand, it is okay. When I perform in Western countries, they hear and they cry. They are not Indians and Pakistanis to understand the words. Sufi music, sufi kalam, makes itself understood by the heart. It is a radiation."

Set to go on a tour of Europe this June, the veteran has just released Ruh-e-Ali, her latest album of Sufi compositions by Muzaffar Ali. The musical approach is different from other albums so far.

"The verses of the veterans of the faith have their own inexplicable attraction. They are present when you sing them. The whole point is to lessen sorrow in the world."

Aakhir is dard ki dawa kya hai
After all, what is the remedy for this pain?

We are impatient, and he is disgusted
Ya-Ilaahi yeh maajra kya hai
Oh ! God, what is the matter out here

Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?

sabza-o-gul kahan se aye hain
Where from have this beautiful flora and greenery originated?
abr kya chiz hai hawa kya hai
What is this cloud and the wind?

Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?

(jan tum par nisar karta hun)2
I would give my life for you
main nahi janta dua kya hai
But I don't know how to verbally offer prayer for you

Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?
abr kya chiz hai hawa kya hai
What is this cloud and the wind?
Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?

jab k tujh bin nahi koi maujud
When there is no one besides you here(in this world)
phir ye hangama, ai Khuda kya hai
Then Oh God! Whati is all this commotion?

Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?

Maine mana ke kuch nahin "Ghalib"
I admit that it is nothing, "Ghalib"
Muft haath aaye to bura kya hai
What is bad if it comes to hand gratis?

Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?
Aakhir is dard ki dawa kya hai
After all, what is the remedy for this pain?
Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?

Raushan jamaal-e-yaar se hai anjuman tamaam
With the glowing beauty of my beloved the gathering seemed complete
Dahakaa huaa hai aatish-e-gul se chaman tamaam
Just as the garden is aflame with the fiery beauty of the flower

Hairat Guruur-e-husn se shokhii se iztaraab
Steeped in pride of her own beauty and in mischevious ways
Dil ne bhii tere siikh liye hain chalan tamaam
The heart too seems to have learnt all the worldly ways.

Allaah re jism-e-yaar kii khuubii se khud-ba-khud
Oh God the goodness my beloved, has spontaneously caused
Rangiiniyon mein Duub gayaa pairahan tamaam
Her attire (dress) seemed to appear delightfully coloured

Raushan jamaal-e-yaar se hai anjuman tamaam
With the glowing beauty of my beloved the gathering seemed complete

Dekho to husn-e-yaar kii jaaduu nigaahiyaan
Just look at the magical ways of my beloved's glance
Behosh ik nazar mein hu_ii anjuman tamaam
The entire gathering is mesmerized simply by that glance

Raushan jamaal-e-yaar se hai anjuman tamaam
With the glowing beauty of my beloved the gathering seemed complete
Dahakaa huaa hai aatish-e-gul se chaman tamaam

3) MUJHAY BEKHUDE YE TUNE:

Hairat maraaz-e-har do jahan, bee-niyaaz kard
Bewilderment has absolved me of both the worlds
ein khhwab kaar-e-daulat-e-bedar-e-mi kunad
This is the consequence of awakening from my dreams
khuli jabke chashm-e-dil-e-hazeen
The eyes an anguished heart open
to woh nam raha na tarii rahee
No longer moist and bereft of tears
hoi hairat aisee kuchh aankh par
my eye got such amazement that
be-asar ki be-asarii rahee
the effect of effect less got on me
padi gosh-e-jaan me ajab nida
the soul heard an unusual sound
ke jigar na be-jigaree rahee
that took the pluck of life away
khabar-e-tahiyyur-e-ishaq sun
as wondrous love revealed itself
na junoon raha na pari rahee
nor you remained.. nor I was found
na to tuu raha na to main rah
nor you remained.. nor I was found????
jo rahee so be-khabarii rahee
mere oblivion was all there was

Mujhe bekhudi ye tune bhali chashni chakhayi
In love, you have given me a taste that pales all worldliness
Kisi aarzoo ki dil mein nahi ab rahi samayi
No desire remains in the heart filled with submission

mujhe be-khudi ye tuu ne

Na hazar hai na khatar hai, na raja hai ne dua hai
Neither distance nor fear neither hope nor prayer
Na khayaal e bandagi hai na tamana e khudai
Neither thoughts of subjugation nor desire of godliness

mujhe be-khudi ye tuu ne

Na muqqam e guftagu hai na mahhall e justaju hai
No place for exchange of words no occasion for further quest
Na wahan havaas pahunche na khirad ko hai rasai
Where neither consciousness reaches nor thoughts transcend its realm

mujhe be-khudi ye tuu ne

Na makin hai ne makan hai na zameen hai ne zaman hai
No one resides..Neither habitation exist
Dil e be nava ne mere jahan chhavni hai chayi
Is where this wandering heart has come to camp

mujhe be-khudi ye tuu ne

Na visaal hai na hijraan na suroor hai na gham hai
Where there is no union no separation no sorrow no joy
Jise kahiye khwab e ghaflat so woh neend mujh ko aayi
What is said to be an endless oblivion I enter such a slumber

mujhe be-khudi ye tuu ne

(Le chalaa jaan merii ruuth ke jaanaa teraa)2
Your leaving in anger has taken my life
Aise aane se to behatar thaa na aanaa teraa
It would have been better if you had not come at all

(Tuu jo ai zulf-e-pareshaan rahaa karatii hai)2
You remain with your hair dishevelled
Kis ke ujare hue dil mein hai thikaanaa teraa
Whose desolate heart is the place for you?

Le chalaa jaan merii ruuth ke jaanaa teraa
Your leaving in anger has taken my life

(Tu khuda tho nahi ai naa sahay nadaan mera)2
You are not perfect, you could not bear my foolishness
(Kya khataa kii, jo kaha main ne na mana teraa)2
What did I do wrong by not heeding your word?

Le chalaa jaan merii ruuth ke jaanaa teraa
Your leaving in anger has taken my life

(Apanii aankhon mein abhii kaund gaii bijali si)2
A flash of lightning must have blinded me,
Ham na samajhe ki ye aanaa hai ke jaanaa teraa
I cannot make out if you are coming or going

Le chalaa jaan merii ruuth ke jaanaa teraa
Your leaving in anger has taken my life

Aise aane se to behatar thaa na aanaa teraa
It would have been better if you had not come at all
Le chalaa jaan merii ruuth ke jaanaa teraa
Your leaving in anger has taken my life

(Ye samajh kar tujhe, ai maut, lagaa rakhaa hai)2
O Death! I keep you close to me, thinking
Kaam aataa hai bure waqt mein aanaa teraa
It might be useful if you appear during bad times

(˜Daag' ko yuun vo mitaate hain, ye farmaate hain)
They are trying to erase ˜Daag' (the stain), and saying
tuu badal daal huaa naam puraanaa teraa
"Change your (pen) name now, it has worn out".

Le chalaa jaan merii ruuth ke jaanaa teraa
Your leaving in anger has taken my life

6) HAZARON KHWAHISHEIN AISEE: MP 3:

(Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dum nikle)2
Thousands of desires, each worth dying for
Bahot nikle mere armaan, lekin phir bhi kam nikle
Many of them I have realized yet I yearn for more

(Mahobbat mein nahin hai farq jeenay aur marnay ka)2
When in love, there is little difference between life and death
(Usi ko dekh kar jeetay hain, jis kaafir pe dam nikle)2
We live by looking at the infidel for whom we are willing to die

Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dum nikle
Thousands of desires, each worth dying for

(Daray kyon mera qaatil? kya rahega us ki gardan par?)2
Why should my killer (lover) be afraid? No one will hold her responsible
(Voh khoon, jo chashm-e-tar se umr bhar yoon dam-ba-dam nikle)2
For the blood which will continuously flow through my eyes all my life

Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dum nikle
Thousands of desires, each worth dying for

(Nikalna khuld se aadam ka soonte aaye hain lekin)2
We have heard about the dismissal of Adam from Heaven
(Bahot be-aabru hokar tere kooche se hum nikle)2
With more humiliation, I am leaving the street on which you live

Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dum nikle
Thousands of desires, each worth dying for

(Hui jin se tavaqqa khastagi ki daad paane ki)2
From whom I expected justice/praise for my weakness
(Voh hum se bhi zyaada khasta e tegh e sitam nikle)2
Turned out to be more injured with the same cruel sword

Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dum nikle
Thousands of desires, each worth dying for

(Kahaan maikhane ka darwaaza Ghalib aur kahaan vaaiz)2
The preacher and the bar's entrance are way apart
(Par itna jaantay hain kal voh jaata tha ke hum nikle)2
Yet I saw him entering the bar as I was leaving!

Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dum nikle
Thousands of desires, each worth dying for
Bahot nikle mere armaan, lekin phir bhi kam nikle
Many of them I have realized yet I yearn for more
Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dum nikle
Thousands of desires, each worth dying for

7) DIL HI TO HAI: MP 3

8) HAR EK BAAT PE KEHTE HO:

Har ek baat pe kehte ho tum ke too kya hai?
on just about every thing u tell me who u are
Tumheen kaho ke yeh andaaz-e-guftgoo kya hai?
now u only tell wat is this way to talk like this

(Jalaa hai jism jahaan dil bhee jal gaya hoga)2
when the body has burned the heart would have burnt too
Kuredate ho jo ab raakh, justjoo kya hai?
why do you scratch these ashes what do you really want now

Har ek baat pe kehte ho tum ke too kya hai?
on just about every thing u tell me who u are

(Na shole mein yeh karishma na barq mein yeh ada)2
Koee batao ki woh shokh-e-tund_khoo kya hai?

Har ek baat pe kehte ho tum ke too kya hai?
on just about every thing u tell me who u are

(Ragon mein daudte firne ke ham naheen qaayal)2
I am not fond of seeing them flow in the veins
Jab aankh hee se na tapka to fir lahoo kya hai?
when it didnt dropped out of the eyes then may be its not blood

Har ek baat pe kehte ho tum ke too kya hai?
on just about every thing u tell me who u are

(Rahee na taaqat-e-guftaar, aur agar ho bhee)2
There remains none but little strength to speak
To kis ummeed pe kahiye ke aarzoo kya hai?
then on wat hope should i tell u wat is my wish

Har ek baat pe kehte ho tum ke too kya hai ?
on just about every thing u tell me who u are

(Huwa hai shaah ka musaahib, fire hai itaraata)2
Wagar na shehar mein 'Ghalib' kee aabroo kya hai?

Har ek baat pe kehte ho tum ke too kya hai?
on just about every thing u tell me who u are
Tumheen kaho ke yeh andaaz-e-guftgoo kya hai?
now u only tell wat is this way to talk like this

Ah!! This is soo beautiful, I feel like I am in the company of Madam Abida, and lost in a trance.......such is the power of her magestical voice.

Will get back to this one with some more indept translations: for instance the opening shayer can also literally means

Aadmi Aadmi Say Milta Hai
Even if one may easily meet other people,
Dil Magar Kam Kisi Say Milta Hai
It is difficult to find a soul-mate.

10) HUSN GAMZE KI KASHAKASH SE:

This is a rarely heard but beautiful and touching poem by Ghalib. Mirza ji is saying that no one can love as deeply as he could, and the future of Love itself is in jeopardy after his death.

Abidaji did not sing all these verses maybe, but I felt it would be worth including these.

husn Ghamze kii kashaakash se chhuTaa mere baad
After me, the beauty was free of the power of my glances
baare aaraam se hai ahl-e-jafaa mere baad
At last, she rests without fear of being jilted, after me

ma.nsab-e-shefatagii ke koii qaabil na rahaa
no one was worthy of the status of lover, after me
huii ma_azuulii-e-a.ndaaz-o-adaa mere baad
the style, the panache, was dethroned, after me

shama bujhatii hai to us me.n se dhuaa.N uThataa hai
when the flame goes out, a smoke rises where it used to be,
sholaa-e-ishq siyahaposh huaa mere baad
the flame of love was indeed dark, after me

Khuu.N hai dil Khaak me.n ahavaal-e-butaa.N par, yaanii
if you ask her condition, there is blood, the heart in ashes
unake naaKhun hue mohataaj-e-hinaa mere baad
her nails need the coloring of henna, after me

daraKhur-e-arz nahii.n jauhar-e-bedaad ko jaa
there is no need to draw attention to the jewels of injustice
nigah-e-naaz hai surme se Khafaa mere baad
the once-proud eyes now eschew eye make-up, after me

hai junuu.N ahl-e-junuu.N ke liye aaGosh-e-vidaa
I am in ecstasy at the thought of embracing my farewell
chaak hotaa hai garebaa.N se judaa mere baad
the slit (from my lover's knife) and my neck part, after me

kaun hotaa hai hariif-e-mai-e-mard-afgan-e-ishq
who can refuse wine after discarding his love?
hai mukarrar lab-e-saaqii pe salaa mere baad
the invitation on my lover's lips is fixed

Gham se marataa huu.N ke itanaa nahii.n duniyaa me.n koii
I am dying from the sadness of thinking that
ke kare ta_aziiyat-e-mehar-o-vafaa mere baad
there is no one to mourn the passing of love, after me

aaye hai bekasi-e-ishq pe ronaa 'Ghalib'
Ghalib! The helplessness of love brings tears
kisake ghar jaayegaa sailaab-e-balaa mere baad
where will this flood of misfortune go, after me?
