Romel Ross, the 19-year-old inmate who was injured last Friday in what is said to be an escalating gang war, has been admitted to the Georgetown Prison infirmary. His mother is now seeking a meeting with prison authorities today, in the wake of what she said is the third such attack on her son.

The woman said that prison officials have not provided her with any information on the incident. An official that Kaieteur News contacted yesterday also declined comment, while saying that he is awaiting a report. Ross, a resident of Agricola, who has been on remand since January, was chopped on the head, hands and legs last Friday night, during an altercation with other inmates in the ‘Brick Prison’, which houses prisoners on remand. Some of the inmates set a mattress alight. Prison and Fire Service ranks extinguished the blaze and also reportedly doused the fighting inmates. Ross’ relatives said that he was also stabbed and chopped twice before, and they had asked prison officials to have him isolated for his safety. The attacks on Ross reportedly stem from a vendetta outside the prison that has led to at least three recent execution-style murders. Some incarcerated gang members have reportedly vowed to kill other prisoners who are from Agricola. The vendetta is reportedly connected to the recent murder of 23-year-old Kellon Hinds, called ‘Baige,’ who was gunned down a few weeks ago in East Ruimveldt. He was slain hours after being released from custody.

Hinds himself was a suspect in the murder of Sherwyn Barrow, who was slain in ‘Warlock’, East Ruimveldt last May. Shawn Barrow, a relative of the slain Sherwyn Barrow, was charged two weeks ago for Kellon Hinds’ murder. He is currently an inmate at Camp Street. Other members of the Barrow clan have met violent ends. They include Agricola resident David Barrow, called ‘Gurple’ who was beheaded in 2005, allegedly by members of the notorious ‘Fine man’ gang.

What percentage of each race is in jail ?

The PNC should release this statistic. It will assist in reducing crime in Guyana and assistance can be provided to troubled groups.
