Former PPP-Civic ministers tipped for govt jobs

Former Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Robert Persaud. Former Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Robert Persaud.

Two former ministers in the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) administration have been offered jobs with the six- month old coalition-led administration, according to well-placed sources.
They are former Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Robert Persaud and former Minister of Labour, Dr. Nanda Kishore Gopaul.
Initial information is that Persaud is tipped to be given a job in investment promotion and Gopaul, if he accepts, could be heading a US$30 million project to develop the former D’Urban Park Racecourse- the large swathe of vacant land aback the 1763  Slave Rebellion ‘Cuffy’ Monument between Homestretch Avenue and Hadfield Street.
Prior to and after the May 11, 2015 general and regional elections the A Partnership for National Unity+ Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) administration had committed itself to inclusionary governance by reaching out across the political divide.
nk gopaulFormer Minister of Labour, Dr. Nanda Kishore 'NK' Gopaul. He late October attended the opening of a two-day conference on ‘Building Capacity for Managing the Hydrocarbon Sector in Guyana,’ at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre.  At the opening of that conference, Governance Minister Raphael Trotman had remarked that “I ask aloud and rhetorically: Will we allow our political differences to divide and diminish our potential once again? And I am very pleased to see seated here former minister of natural resources and my friend Mr. Robert Persaud; thank you for coming and joining us today.”

The Guyana Trades Union Congres (GTUC), which has historical ties to the People's National Congress Reform- the largest partner in APNU- had often condemned Gopaul for what it had regarded as his less than satisfactory role in addressing the plight of more than 50 bauxite workers who had been fired by RUSAL.

Gopaul has strong roots in labour and politics, having been a key figure in the National Association of Agricultural and Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE).
Persaud had been heavily criticized because a radio station with which he had been connected had been allocated several radio frequencies by then President, Bharrat Jagdeo prior to the establishment of the Broadcasting Authority.

Sources said he has virtually severed ties with the PPP, having not attended any leadership meetings since mid May, 2015.
Persaud’s acquisition of a house lot and sale of that land and house at Pradoville Two (Sparendaam-Goedverwagting) is among several that are now part of a legal challenge by former parliamentarian, Desmond Trotman and the Committee for the Defence of the Constitution Inc. They want the High Court to set aside the purported sale and transfer of lands at Goedverwagting and Sparendaam and they be put in the hands of the Finance Minister.
The State Assets Recovery Unit (SARU) has also taken steps to have the matter addressed by the Attorney General’s Chambers and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Chambers.

More things change, the more they stay the same. Is this not the same Nanda Gopaul who refused to intervene to protect the rights of workers in Linden ann was heavily criticized by the coalition partners when they were in opposition, the samevRobert Persaud who received land in Pradoville 2 at a low price and then sold the property after he developed it and received radio station licences and sold it? If this is true, it shows that nothing has really changed, these guys are are all together in the same bed. This is not reaching across the political divide. It is "show us how you did it." Both of these guys are corrupt. Many stories here in Guyana regarding them both.

Hmmmm! Does smell fishy.

Stink like heck if this is true! It might be because Robert Persaud and Brian Tiwari attended the party thrown by APNU for those former soldiers who came to Guyana to help with the campaign.

Z

Without objections, those two fellas accepted the results and vacated their offices long before the PPP accepted defeat. Perhaps, it was those two that the AFC claimed were on board with them, coming from the PPP.

Blasted PNC doing same thing as they did back in the 50's. No vision. When will that country ever have good leadership.

Why did Granger ever decided to run for the job?

S

While the coalition's offer of jobs to former PPP ministers is laudable, the initial choice of Robert Persaud and NK Gopaul is raising eyebrows especially among coalition supporters in social media. Perhaps, the government has its own reason for co-opting them.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s Burnham succeeded in neutralizing the PPP by getting its parliamentarians to cross the floor. Jagan had to beg him to stop and he agreed, but by then he had already consolidated his power. In the present case, neither Robert nor NK is significant in the PPP. Anyway, it's an interesting development.

JAGDEO’S LEADERSHIP IS DIVIDING THE PPP

NOVEMBER 9, 2015 | BY  | FILED UNDER EDITORIAL

The new Leader of the Opposition has been President for 12 years out of the 23 years the PPP was in power. Towards the end of his term, he propitiously anointed Donald Ramotar to be the Presidential Candidate in the 2011 election.

Elected with a minority government, former President Jagdeo assumed the role of de-facto President in the Ramotar government.

But after losing the last election, Ramotar was cast aside for Jagdeo who became the leader of the PPP.

The reason for the coronation of Mr. Ramotar was because Jagdeo wanted the leadership to emerge from the highest echelons of the party and to have someone whom he could influence.

Those who had opposed the choice were threatened and told not to challenge his decision. Their disagreements and unhappiness have now spilled over into the dispute between Ramotar and Jagdeo.

Today, those acquainted with the PPP can vouch that the party is in fact divided and bruised by Jagdeo’s high-handed approach, which Mr. Ramotar seems to oppose.

In fact, democracy has caught up with the group-think PPP which now finds itself more beleaguered than it has ever been in outing fires and quelling discontent among its leaders.

But credit must be given to the party leaders who have always come together when commonsense demands that they do. They will speak with one voice when they have to, despite being disgruntled with the leader because their first loyalty is to the party and their goal is to win every election.

The leaders have always put on a brave face in light of their disagreements but they would refrain from giving the party a bad press.

As leader, Jagdeo is desperately hoping that his approach will win the day but his many errors since he became the leader of the PPP have demonstrated that he is not the right person to lead the party.

His incompetence, temperament and ultimatums have created a vexatious spirit among those who disagreed with him and they have also fractured the party.

However, the APNU+AFC government should know that every inept act or gross errors on its part would not only make them look silly, but they would also make-up for Jagdeo’s short-comings and at the same time boost the PPP ratings.

But the people are so fed up with the corrupt and immoral behaviour of the PPP, they have flocked to the APNU+AFC government in droves.

The PPP is in a dilemma; it is divided and the bombastic leadership of its leader has made things even worse. There is no sense of magnanimity towards Jagdeo by his comrades, but out of necessity, they would act in unity.

Many are disgruntled with the way

Mr. Ramotar was cast aside.

Jagdeo, who prides himself as a transformational leader, has not done anything transformational during his Presidency or as Leader of the Opposition.

Not only has he undermined the policy of the government on the border dispute, he has opposed unity and has repeatedly tarnished the image of the country with his caustic statements. He has taken the party backward with his AphanJaat politics.

The tribal politics practiced by him is the primary reason for the party’s defeat in the last election.

Why should the people support the PPP with all its corrupt practices and political infighting that has been the hallmark of the party since he assumed the leadership?

His practices, abandonment of the poor and support for his rich friends have mired Guyana in huge debt, heaped suffering upon the people, and made Guyana into a basket case and the scorn of the Caribbean. He has embittered too many people, impoverished Guyana and compromised its future.

The new government is part of a new experiment for social change which has made them feisty and relevant and the people hopeful.

However, its agenda for change must include constitutional reform that will make Guyanese truly sovereign.

There must be economic reform that will create jobs and a strategy to reduce crime.

It would require nobility of spirit and leadership.

It looks like the afc/apnu coalition is at their wits ends as they now have to reach out to PPP rejects to help take the blame for the waning economy. Its desperation time as they try a hail Mary, hoping for a catch in the end zone.

The BB did not changed. It is only those who post. What they post. And how they post their comments. After twenty odd years. Today, the majority of posters are like Jagdeo-vulgar and intimidating.

There are solutions to Guyana's problems. Unfortunately, no one wants to make the effort. Those marginal minds believe a good cuss down would put some people in their right place.

I am not Walla, you can address me as BGurd_see if you like.

You make your bed and lie in it. Guyana's development now belongs to the government you supported. Now deal with the criticism just as the PPP supporters dealt with criticism when they were in power.  There is no need to harass me if you disagree with my views. We all have a right to speak our opinion.

Granger is scratching the surface.  He needs to bite the bullet and recruit in the great BJ to buttress the feeble, weak, incompetent and visionless PNC.  The PNC lacks new age leadership quality and brutish, loud mouth and bullyism form of leadership just don't cut it in this day and age.  The PNC is just not up to it.

Excellent suggestion.

Place Jagdeo in charge of Finance. Guyana need a Pradoville III with more mansions, while the poor struggle to feed their family.

The poor need to get their act together and start helping themselves.  It's only so much one can do for another.  Most people are poor because they are weak, feeble and many times lazy!

Base, you mentioned this previously.

How does a people elevate themselves out of poverty without coordination and guidance from their government ?

For example, I believe suicide prevention is not working well as it should, because it is not a national coordinated effort.

The more you find excuses for people, the more they develop a welfare state of mind.  If they want to be spoon-fed, then there is a price, but they, and the likes of you, cry wolf.  You Socialist just don't get it, this is why the US has become a welfare state.

Suicide is also high in the wealthy Nordic European nations.

Yet you support a PPP, which until recently claimed to be Marxist Leninists, and still contains many like Rohee and Luncheon.

What model do you see working in Guyana to elevate the poor ?

I am not being sarcastic, I am trying to understand your suggestion.
