FOREVER MOHD RAFI:

July 31st marks thirty seven years, since the passing of one of the Legendary Singer in India....Padmashree Mohamed Rafi, (July 31/80).

Rafi was born in a small village called Kotla Sultan Singh near Amritsar in December 1924.When his family moved to Lahore, he was still a baby.
It is said that a fakir used to come to their locality in Lahore every day and sing. The young Rafi was so fascinated by him that he used to follow him around. His elder brother Hamid was aware of Rafi's love for music and encouraged it. "In fact," says music director Naushad, "A lot of credit for Rafi's success must go to Hamid who knocked on several doors and tried everything to ensure that his brother got work.

The young Rafi was so engrossed with music and singing, he started taking music lessons from his the professional "Ustad Wahid Khan."

It is said that Rafi used to sing for friends and small occasions and as fate would have it,
one day himself and his borther attended a show featuring the "Great" K.L. Saigal. At the time, there was a power failure, and KL refused to sing, as the microphone was not operative, Rafi's brother Hamid, went to the organisers and practically begged that Rafi be given a chance to sing.
He was thirteen at the time, and the performance he gave was so impressive that the music director, invited him to Bombay.

The music director gave him a break, the movie was Gul Baloch,
the song became a hit, but then later, he met another Great "Naushad" and from then on there were no stopping for Rafi, Naushad said "When I heard Rafi, I liked his voice and promised him work in future. I was already doing a film called Shahjehan with Saigal. Rafi, who was a fan of Saigal, came to me with a request: that it was his greatest desire to sing with Saigal. I gave him one line in the song Roohi roohi mere sapno ki rani," recalls Naushad. "The first full song he sang for me was in Anmol Ghadi -- it went like Tera khilona toota balak..." he adds. "Then again he sang for me in Dillagi: Is duniya mein aye dilwalon dil ka lagana khel nahin and Tere koonche main armanon ki duniya leke aaya hoon."

Then like a Godsend came Baiju Bawara features some of the greatest songs by Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mageshkar. The melodies are simply haunting. "O Duniya ke rakhwale", "Insaan Bano", "Mohe Bhool gaye sawariya" and "Tu Ganga ki Mouj me" are timeless classics of Hindi cinema.
Big names in this film: Mohd Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Naushad, Meena Kumari.

On his personal life..Rafi married Bilquis his wife, and had four sons and three daughters, it is said that Rafi was a teetotaller, a religious and extremely humble person. He was a devout Muslim. Laxmikant-Pyarelal duo once observed - "He always gave without thinking of the returns". Rafi was also famous for his various humanitarian efforts.

The date of his passing away was perhaps
divinely pre-ordained, for it is said that one who dies in the
holy month goes to heaven. There was no person more deserving of that status than the pious and God-fearing Rafi, who never touched a drop of alcohol, who never told a lie, who never had a harsh word for anyone, and who worshipped his work. A man whose songs wiped away many a sorrowful tear from the eyes of those who were struggling under the burden of life and brought tears of ecstatic joy to many more.

Mrs Mohd Rafi on Mohd Rafi

Today, when I look back I am grateful for the children we have borne. They have been wonderful sons and daughters, and have been my strength for the last /// years, after his passing away. But yet there are moments when I wish I was 13 years old and Rafi saab was 19. There are times when I wish he would come to me like he would nearly every evening, sit beside me and ask me, What is troubling you? Tell me your troubles and they will all go away.

The next day, he sat for rehearsal from 9:30am and was in pain, but he refused to tell us anything till 12:30 in the afternoon. We scoulded him about it, but he told us,Γ‹Ε“Those who come to the Rafi residence, should never return empty-handed. These were his last words.

He was in a lot of pain and was sweating profusely. It was also in the month of Ramzan, so he was hungry. His hands and feet were yellow. The doctors asked us to shift him to a hospital, explaining that Rafi saab had suffered a very major heart attack. The end came soon after that.

"Tu kahin aas paas hai dost" (You are some where around, my friend) -

the last song sung by Mohammed Rafi sums up what millions of music lovers feel about the legendary playback singer even 26 years after his death.

As the shocking news of Rafi Sahab's demise was redeived. The sad news spread like wild fire throughout the country. Songs turned into a dirge. The angels wept in the sky and tears were shed in the form of raindrops over his namaaz-e-janaza (funeral prayer), His funeral procession started amid heavy
rain and thunder, people gathered on the top of buildings, trees and in windows to catch a last glimpse of their favourite singer. The procession reached the Juhu graveyard.

A LEGEND IN HIS LIFETIME, THE MASTER WAS NO MORE

MOHAMED RAFI (1924 - 1980)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BbVwBbuh7I

Suhaani raat dhal chuki
The lovely night has decended
Na jaane tum kab aaoge
I don't know when you will come
Suhaani raat dhal chuki
The lovely night has decended
Na jaane tum kab aaoge
I don't know when you will come
Jahan ki rut badal chuki
The world's the climate have changed
Na jaane tum kab aaoge
I don't know when you will come

Nazaarein apni mastiyaan dikha dikhaake so gaye
The sights have shown their effects and are now gone
Sitaarein apni roshni luta lutaake so gaye
The stars have brilliantly shone and are now no more
Har ek shamma jal chuki
Every lamp that lit has burnt out
Na jaane tum kab aaoge
When are you going to come

Suhaani raat dhal chuki
The lovely night has decended
Na jaane tum kab aaoge
I don't know when you will come

Tadap rahe hai hum yahan
I am suffering here
Tadap rahe hai hum yahan tumhaare intezaar mein
I am suffering whilst waiting on you
Tumhaare intezaar mein
Waiting on you
Tumhaare intezaar mein
Waiting on you
Fiza ka rang aa chala hai
the colorful springtime is almost here
Mausam-e-bahaar mein
in the beautiful season
Mausam-e-bahaar mein
in the beautiful season
Hawa bhi rukh badal chuki
The winds have also changed directions
Na jaane tum kab aaoge
I don't know when you will come

Suhaani raat dhal chuki
The lovely night has decended
Na jaane tum kab aaoge
I don't know when you will come

Our next selection is perhaps one of the greatest song that was ever sang, if not the greatest. This song is unique in the sense that it established the range of Rafi Saab’s voice. The depth and height of his voice seen in this song, can be discribed as incredible. We can heard the 4th octave level in this song which is very rare amongs't singers. The other notable characteristics is that, as the pitch increases the width of the voice also increases which normally narrows in other singers. This is the true greatness of Rafi Saab. Whenever great songs are being discussed, this one will stand out as a shining star. This one surely catapulted Rafi Saab to great heights.

2) O DUNIYA KE RAKHWALE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReFDB8cexLg

Bhagwaan Bhagwaan Bhagwaan
O lord o lord o lord

O duniya ke rakhwaale
O maintainer of this universe
(Sun dard bhare mere naale)2
Listen to my painfilled plea

Aash niraash ke do rango se duniya toone sajaayi
You created this world with hope and despair
Naiya sang toofaan banaya milan ke saath judaayi
You also created a storm of meeting with separation
Ja dekh liya harjaayi
I saw the hardship of test
Ho loot gayi mere pyaar ki nagari ab to neer baha le
My village has been taken away, shed a tear
Ab to neer baha le
Shed a tear
Ho ab to neer baha le
Now shed a tear

O duniya ke rakhwaale
O maintainer of this universe
(Sun dard bhare mere naale)2
Listen to my painfilled plea

Aag bani saawan ki barkha phool bane angaare
Fire has become the rain, and the flowers sparks like burnt coal
Naagan ban gayi raat suhaani patthar ban gaye taare
This lovely night has become like a poisonous snake
Sab toot chuke hain sahaare
All support has been crumbled
Ho jeevan apna waapas le le jeevan dene waale
Now take this life back from me, O lifegiver
O duniya ke rakhwaale
O Maintainer of this universe

Chand ko dhoondhe paagal sooraj shaam ko dhoondhe savera
The crazy sun is seeking the moon, the night is searching for the morn,
Main bhi dhoondhoon uss preetam ko ho na sakaa jo mera
I'm also looking for that beloved one who has not become mine
Bhagwaan bhala ho tera
May God bless you,
Ho Kismat footi aas na tooti paanv mein pad gaye chhaale
My destiny is shattered and there is no hope
O duniya ke rakhwaale
O Maintainer of the universe

Mahal udaas aur galiyaa suni chup chup hain deewaare
The palace is dejected, streets are empty, the walls are silent
Dil kya ujada duniya ujadi, ruth gayi hain bahaare
As the heart broke, the world got shattered
Hum jeevan kaise gujaare
How can we live this life?
Ho mandir girtaa fir ban jata dil ko kaun sambhaale
Temple crashes down it can be rebuilt, but who can take care of this heart?

O duniya ke rakhwaale
O maintainer of this universe
(Sun dard bhare mere naale)2
Listen to my painfilled plea

o duniya ke rakhwaale, rakhwaale, rakhwaale, rakhwaale, rakhwaale
O maintainer of the world! Maintainer! Maintainer! Maintainer! Maintainer!

Chale aaj tum jahaan se, huyee zindagee paraayee
You leave this world today, my life is not mine anymore
Tumhen mil gayaa tikaanaa, humein maut bhee na aayee
You found your niche, I didnt even find death

(O dhoor ke musaafir, hum ko bhi saath le le re
O traveller to a far place, take me along
Hum ko bhi saath le le, hum rahe gaye akele)2
Take me along I am left all alone

Thoone wo de diyaa gum, bemauth mar gaye hum
You gave me such a grief, I died without dying
Dil ut gayaa jahaan se, (le chal humein yahaan se)2
My heart wants none of this world, take me away from here
Kis kaam ki ye duniyaa jo zindagee se khele re
I want nothing of this world, the world that plays with your life
Hum ko bhi saath le le, hum rahe gaye akele
Take me along I am left all alone

Sooni hai dil ki raahein, khaamosh hain nigaahein
Deserted are the paths of my heart, vacant is my sight
Naakaam hasraton kaa (utane ko hai janaazaa)2
Now is the funeral of my unfulfilled dreams
Chaaron tharaf lage hain, barabaadiyon ke mele re
Devastation all around me
Hum ko bhi saath le le, hum rahe gaye akele
Take me along I am left all alone

(O dhoor ke musaafir, hum ko bhi saath le le re
O traveller to a far place, take me along
Hum ko bhi saath le le, hum rahe gaye akele)2
Take me along I am left all alone

The trio of Mohd Rafi, Naushad, and Shakeel Badayuni, will never be forgotten, their works were always gems to be remembered. Some of the finest songs in Hindi Cinema that can be called classics were done by this trio.

So far we have showcased Rafi, Naushad, and Shakeel Badayuni, we will continue with this trio in a few more songs which has throughout the years still chugs at ones heart.

FOREVER MOHD RAFI:

One of the most famous Bhajans to be used in a Hindi movie is the evergreen bhajan Man Tadpat from the movie Baiju Bawra that was released in 1952. This Bhajan was based on Raga Malkauns in pure form. The music was set to tune by maestro Naushad Ali. All the songs in this film were based on Classical ragas. Man Tadpat was sung by the immortal Mohammed Rafi. Initially, the Urdu-speaking Mohammed Rafi had problems pronouncing some Sanskrit words of this Bhajan. So the music director, Naushad had to invite Sanskrit pundits from Varanasi to train Mohammed Rafi so that he could pronounce the Sanskrit lyrics of the Bhajan correctly. The pundits had to work very hard to improve Mohammed Rafi's diction. But after a great deal of effort, the pundits finally did succeed in improving Rafi's pronunciation to the desired extent. After several rehearsals, Naushad gave them his final approval to record this Bhajan. This Bhajan is popular even today. This Bhajan has been sung in most of the temples all over the world. We have heard this Bhajan thousands of times, and we still want to listen to it over and over again. This does not surprise me when I consider all the effort that went into the rehearsals of this great Bhajan before it was recorded. I do not think there is any another composition in Hindi films based on Raga Malkauns that is better than Man Tadpat.

One more interesting fact to be noted here is that all 3 artists Mohd. Rafi (Singer), Naushad (Composer) and Shakeel Badayuni (Lyricist) were all Muslims and yet the trio gave to the world the most unforgettable Bhajan of all times "Man Tadpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj" which has been sung or played on the instrument in almost all Hindu Templs at least once all over the World.

"While taking takes after takes of the song Naushadji was not satisfied with the result and always felt some thing missing from the song, that was the feeling. Rafi Sahab then requested the director to get a picture of lord Krishna. Soon a framed picture was brought from the market. Rafi saheb placed the picture right in front of him in the recording room and asked Naushadji to start a fresh take. This take came out really great and all musicians found that Rafi sahab was in tears while giving this recording.Such was the commitment & feelings; no wonder this is one of the best Bhajans in Hindi Film History."
Dr. Narasinha Kamath.

7) MERE MEHBOOB TUJHE MERI MOHABBAT KI KASAM

http://www.mastimag.com/download.php?song_id=39590

(Mere mehboob tujhe meri mohabbt ki kasam)2
My beloved, I beseech you in the name of my love for you
Phir mujhe nargisi ankhon ka sahara dede
Once again, give me the support of these Iris like eyes
Mera khoya hua rangeen nazara dede
Bring back to me the beautiful outlook that was lost

Mere mehboob tujhe
My beloved ..

Ae mere khwab ki taabir meri jaan-e-ghazal
You who are the realization of my dreams, the soul of my poetry
Zindagi meri tujhe yaad kiye jaati hai
My existence (life) keeps remembering you
Raat din mujhko satata hai tasavur tera
Day and night I am tormented by the thought of you
Dil ki dhadkan tujhe awaaz diye jaati hai
My heartbeat keeps calling out to you
Aa mujhe apni sadaon ka sahara dede
Come strengthen me with your voice calling out to me
Mera khoya hua rangeen nazzara dede
Bring back to me the beautiful outlook that was lost

Mere mehboob tujhe
My beloved ..

Bhool sakti nahin ankhen woh suhana manzar
My eyes can not forget that lovely sight
Jab tera husn mere ishq se takraya tha
When your loveliness met with my adoration
Aur phir raha mein bikhre the hazaron naghme
Around us swelled thousands of melodies
Meri woh naghme teri awaaz ko de aaya tha
I had bestowed those melodies of mine to your voice
Saz-e-dil ko unhi geeton ka sahara dede
Play those songs on the lyre of my heart
Mera khoya hua rangeen nazara dede
Bring back to me the beautiful outlook that was lost

Mere mehboob tujhe
My beloved ..

Yaad hai mujhko meri umr ki pehli woh gadi
I remember the very first moment of my life
Teri ankhon se koi jaam piya tha maine
When I drank deep of thine eyes
Mere rug rug mein koi barqse lehrai thi
Lightening struck through every part of my being
Jab tere marmari haathon ko chua tha maine
When I hesitantly touched your fair hands
Aa mujhe phir unhi haathon ka sahara dede
Give me once again the support of those fair hands
Mera khoya hua rangeen nazara dede
Bring back to me the beautiful outlook that was lost

Mere mehboob tujhe
My beloved ..

Maine ik baar teri ek jhalak dekhi hai
Once I saw you for a brief moment
Meri hasrat hai ke mein phir tera deedar karoon
I long to see you once again in front of my eyes
Tere saaye ko samajh kar mein haseen Taj Mahal
Your shadow I will treat as the Beautiful Taj
Chandni raat me nazaronse tujhe pyar karoon
And in moonlit night I will love you with my eyes
Apni mehki hui zulfon ka sahara dede
Give me the gift of your fragrant tresses
Mera khoya hua rangeen nazara dede
Bring back to me the beautiful outlook that was lost

Mere mehboob tujhe
My beloved ..

Dhoond tha hoon tujhe har raah mei har mehfil mein
I seek you in every path, in every gathering
Thak gaye hai meri majboor tamanna ki kadam
Weary now is my helpless unfulfilled desire
Aaj ka din meri umeed ki hai aakhri din
Today is the last day of my hopes
Kal na jaane mei kahan aur kahan tu hai sanam
Tomorrow who knows where I will be and where you, my love
Do ghadi apni nigahon ka sahara dede
For a brief moment support me with your gaze
Mera khoya hua rangeen nazara dede
Bring back to me the beautiful outlook that was lost

Mere mehboob tujhe
My beloved ..

Saamne aa ke zara parda utha de rukh se
Appear in front of me and unveil yourself
Ik yahi mera ilaaj-e-ghum-e-tanhai hai
Only this way can I be rid of this loneliness
Teri furqat ne pareshaan kiya hai mujhko
Your separation torments me constantly
Ab to milja ke meri jaan pe ban aayi hai
Oh come to me for this is now my life and death issue
Dil ko bhooli hui yaadon ka sahara dede
Shore up my heart with the forgotten memories
Mera khoya hua rangeen nazara dede
Bring back to me the beautiful outlook that was lost

Mere mehboob tujhe
My beloved ..

Mere mehboob tujhe meri mohabbt ki kasam(repeat)
My beloved, I beseech you in the name of my love for you
Phir mujhe nargisi ankhon ka sahara dede
Once again, give me the support of these Iris like eyes
Mera khoya hua rangeen nazara dede
Bring back to me the beautiful outlook that was lost

Let's see who gives up all in persuit of love
Woh le Chale hein aan to ham jaan le chale
she brings her pride and I offer my life
Maut ka Saman le chale
cause of my death

Dil Mein Chupake Pyar ka Toofan le Chale
Hidden in my heart I carry a storm of love

Ha Ha Ha Aaa

Manzil pe hoga Faisla (Kismat ke Khel ka)2
At the destination will my fate be decided
Manzil pe hoga Fasila kismat ke khel ka
At the destination will my fate be decided
Kare jo dil ka khoon ho Meheman le Chale
The one to bleed my heart, I carry such a guest
Maut ka saman le chale
cause of my death

Dil Mein Chupake Pyar ka Toofan le Chale
Hidden in my heart I carry a storm of love

(Meri Kahani Bhoolne Wale)2
My story is a forgotten one
Tera Jahan Aabaad Rahe
may your life be happy
Meri Kahani...
my story...

Mere Geet Sune Duniyane Magar,
my song has been heard by this world but
Mera Dard Koyi Na Jaan Saka, Na Jaan Saka,
my pains cannot be understood by anyone, not by anyone
Ek Tera Sahaara Tha Dil Ko, Ek Tera Sahaara Tha,
My heart look to you for support, your support
Tu Bhi Na Mujhay Pehechan Saka,
even you could not recognise me
Bachpan Ke Woh Geet Puraane,
About Our childhood songs
Aaj Tujeh Na Yaad Rahe,
today you do not even remember
Meri Kahani..
my story

Mein Apna Fasana Kehna Saka,
I could not recount my story
Mere Dil Ki Tamanna Dil Mein Rahi, Lo Aaj Kinare Par,
my desires were left in my heart unexpressed
Lo Aaj Kinare Par Aake, Armaanon Ki Kashti Doob Gayi,
today after making landfall the ship of my dreams sank
Armaanon Ki Kashti Doob Gayi,
the ship of expectations have sunk
Kismat Ko Manzur Yahi Tha, Lab Pe Mere Fariyaad Rahe,
this was my destination, and I lament my lost love
Meri Kahani...
my story

(Meri Kahani Bhoolne Wale)2
My story is a forgotten one
Tera Jahan Aabaad Rahe
may your life be happy

FOREVER MOHD RAFI:

Naushad-Rafi-Shakeel Badayuni and tragedy king Dilip Kumar:

So far we have spotlighted ten selections by the magical trio: I think that we can aim for at least fifteen, before getting to the other five, we shall take a brief look at Rafi/Naushad/Badayuni and Dilip Kumar.
In late 1950s, Rafi’s voice, Naushad’s music and Shakeel Badayuni’s lyrics would become super-duper hit and the songs were being heard in all corners of the streets. The combination is famous for extraordinary songs picturised on Dilip Kumar, the greatest actor whose performances are renowned as the epitome of Indian Cinema. He earned the title of β€œtragedy king” for playing tragic roles in the films Babul (1950), Deedar (1951), Amar (1954), and Devdas(1955). The Naushad’s music and Rafi’s voice had much facilitate the thespian Dilip Kumar in getting this title.

Shakeel Badayuni and Naushad became one of the most sought after composer/lyricist duos in the industry. Among the stupendous scores they churned out together, are those of Baiju Bawra (1952), Mother India (1957), and Mughal-e-Azam (1960), that stand out. Other films they scored together include Dulari (1949), Shabab (1954), Ganga Jamuna (1961), and Mere Mehboob (1963). Although Badayuni worked most extensively with Naushad, he also collaborated with Ravi and Hemant Kumar as well. His lyrics for the song Husnwale Tera Jawab Nahin and Ravi's music both won Filmfare Awards for the hit film Gharana. His other notable film with Ravi is Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), while Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) is his biggest hit with Hemant Kumar. The title song from Chaudhvin Ka Chand, rendered by Mohammed Rafi, won Badayuni the Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist in 1961.

Shakeel penned numbers for around 89 films. In addition, he wrote many popular ghazals which are still sung by vocalists like Pankaj Udhas and others. Shakeel shared a close friendship with Naushad, Ravi and Ghulam Mohammed, with whom he enjoyed his life to the fullest. Unlike other shayaars, he wasn't an alcoholic.

With Rafi the duo become a trio, and they weave magic amongs't music lovers

Sit back and enjoy the other five selections involving the Golden Trio, Naushad/Rafi/Badayuni.
