PPP supporters disrupt Granger’s address at private sector luncheon

Several People’s Progressive Party (PPP) supporters on Thursday heckled President David Granger and raised placards as he delivered an address on the political situation to a private sector luncheon.
Senior police officers, including Divisional Police Commander Assistant Police Commissioner Marlon Chapman persuaded the protesters to leave the Easequibi Room at the Pegasus Hotel.
While the protesters, including Juan Edghill, Peter Ramsaroop and Nigel Dharamlall came prepared to protest because they had neatly written placards, the boisterous protest was triggered when Granger remarked that he had moment earlier experienced a bit of “hooliganism”. He was apparently referring to a protest by about 120 Peoples Progressive Party supporters outside the Pegasus Hotel.
Edghill, Nandlall and others chanted “illegal government” for a sustained five minutes. The President sought to endure the protest but eventually discontinued his address until the situation was brought under control.
Business executive, Ramesh Dookhoo moments later urged the protesters to respect the event that was organized by the Guyana Manufacturers and Services Associaton.
Earlier Thursday, PPP supporters accosted Public Infrastructure Minister David Patterson as he sought to enter the Pegasus Hotel for the event.
As the President remarked, Thursday’s episode was similar to one the opposition People’s Progressive Party parliamentarians had staged while he had addressed the Parliament.

Opposition People’s Progressive Party supporters accosted and sought to block at least one government minister from entering the Pegasus Hotel where President David Granger is expected to address a private sector luncheon.
Patterson was unable to access the south-western gate to the hotel because it was locked. When the protesters realised that it was Patterson, they encircled and chased him out of the area.
He was escorted by senior police officers to the south-eastern gate near the flooded Pegasus car park. Several opposition protesters followed him, nevertheless.
A Guyana Defence Force helicopter minutes later hovered the area as part of a security reconnaissance mission.
Inside the Pegasus Hotel, presidential security guards and presidential aides were busy preparing for President David Granger’s arrival.
The luncheon so far (up to 11:42 am) appeared poorly attended partly due to severe police restrictions to vehicular traffic to even invitees and media personnel.
PPP member, Charles Ramson told Demerara Waves News-Talk Radio 103.1 FM that the protest was to hammer home the point that the Granger government is illegal and long-overdue general elections as a result of last December’s no-confidence motion should have been held the latest by March this year.
President Granger was Thursday expected to be informed by Guyana Elections Commission Chairman of the time-frame within which GECOM would be ready to conduct the polls.
The pro-govetning coalition members of the elections commission have ruled out elections this year but have proposed the latest by March, 2020.

It was a budding 3rd force. In 2011 they had the one seat swing. But instead of trying to play that and get some concessions from BJ in exchange for Amelia, the brought the Govt down.
Instead, they should have used that to have more say in the project and project some the AFC agenda items into national policy.

Nah. They in a bit of a corner with that statement from the diplomats. Now is the time from BJ to amp up and bring out his base against the fraudulent list, etc.
Bring more international scrutiny to the process and get the Carter Center and others involved. Free and fair elections is a must! If they win, all well, but let it be fair!
