A fifth-grader in Illinois is dead and her family says bullies are to blame. The 10-year-old girl committed suicide after asking her mom if she could be homeschooled.

"I really thought she had it all under control because I thought she was listening to me," said Stacy Conner, Ashlynn's mother.

Stacy has talked to her daughter about bullying before but she never expected that her daughter, Ashlynn, an honor roll student at Ridgefarm Elementary, would take her life at just 10 years old.

"I thought my kids are strong kids, that my words to them for guidance and advice was going to have more weight than what these kids could be saying," said Stacy.

This is indeed very sad.

Hopelesness is also a big one for youth suicide in Guyana.
Many who drop out of school, dont have any support system for guidance.
They hang out with other drop outs, sleep in, abuse alcohol and drugs.
Some would temporary plant cash crop for money or sell coconut for copra, which they collect for free from neighbours.
After a while, depression and hopelesness sets in with no support system to deal with it, resulting in many taking their own life.

People are really pissed when the MOH says suicide counselling teams are sent to high risk areas like Black Bush Polder and the farmers there been waiting years to see them.

Nothing beats an open door environment with your kids letting them know that no matter what the issue is, they have caring ears in their parents. And too many people don't give things the importance they deserve. There is a no bullying policy all over US schools and unfortunately it was not enough to save this child's, yes child, life. Frown Very distressful indeed.

Ksaz, I hear more and more about programs being put in place to curb/stop bullying in the schools, but I think there needs to be an equal amount of programs that promote kindness, acceptance, appreciating cultural diversity etc. Our children/young people are inundated with TV shows, movies, video games, computer games that glorify negativity, violence and the demeaning of fellow human beings.

Indeed. And unfortunately it is the adults who are promoting the division in the name of free speech. There is so much hatred being disemminated in many avenues of our society and yet we proclaim that we are tolerant. Those who don't have a problem saying that they are against Obama because he is black or those who preach hatred of Muslims because they read an "evil" book. And the worse part is that they yell the loudest most times drowning out the moderate voices.

It seems that we still haven't realized that while we have control on starting the fire, we have no control on what gets burned.

Or maybe we really don't care.

After 9-eleven, "tolerance" was spouted by every Tom, Dick, Harry, jack, Jill, and Jane. What we need is "acceptance".

Coming back to bullying, those who stand by and watch a child/youth being bullied are aiding the bullies to keep on going.

I wonder how many of us in the GNI community were bullied?

I wasn't bullied but had more than my fair share of taunts, insults and picking because of my religion. I once whooped a black guy much bigger than myself and that word went around our neighborhood so the black kids did wish to mess with this coolie. I don't think I would have beaten that guy if I wasn't so pissed off. Smile
