Farmer reaps 450 pounds of onions

Rawle Medford with NAREI officials at his Phillipe farm

A CORENTYNE farmer has harvested some 450 pounds of organic onions from his Phillipe Farm, East Berbice, Corentyne, last Thursday.

It is the largest harvest for a single farmer since implementation of the trial project by Promotion of Regional Opportunities for Produce and Enterprises and Linkages (PROPEL), in partnership with the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI).

Rawle Medford, 41, said he started planting in early December and had 12 beds, but due to the rains during that period, he suffered a 30 per cent loss.

That did not deter the enterprising farmer as he continued the second time with 100 per cent success.

“I feel proud of this production and did not think I would have gotten so much due the challenges, which included the cleaning of the beds on time. There were six beds, 60 feet in length, three feet in width,” he said.

Medford said when he was first approached to be part of the trial group, he was ecstatic to embark on the new variety of the high-value crop.

The farmer still has three more beds to reap, which should take the amount of onions reaped to a whopping 800 pounds.

Medford posited that he will continue planting onions on a larger scale after the May/June rainy season.

He is hoping to continue supplying local demand and hopefully to stop the importation of onions to Guyana.

Onions harvested from Rawle Medford’s farm

“We have the necessary means to plant, we have good lands and the trial has been a success, so after May, I am planning to employ two more persons and we are ready to make this bigger. This is organic onion. I am hoping people can see it and come on board to purchase,” the farmer said.

And on that note, he called on the business community and Guyanese to support local.

“This makes me happy; this makes me optimistic. I am calling on Guyanese to support local organic products that can now be grown right here.”

There has been a conscious effort to reduce the importation of products that can be produced locally; and with the successful trials by PROPEL in collaboration with NAREI, supermarkets can soon expect an influx of non-traditional crops that are locally produced.

In addition to being produced locally, the crops are being planted and harvested through organic methods, thereby reducing the need for harmful chemicals.

Kewal Mangar, the NAREI extension officer attached to the project, said in addition to Medford, there are at least three other farmers who were part of the PROPEL project, who have gone on to becoming independent onion farmers.

He said the Mercedes variety of onions has been more successful thus far and that NAREI is working closely with farmers of the non-traditional both in and out of the field and providing technical advice in addition to identifying potential markets for their produce.

Medford also plants bell peppers and boulanger.

Guyana can be self sufficient in food, taking into consideration the size of it's population and the availability of farming land. The correct approach needed for this to materialize.

All these were accomplished under the FCH program.  My father would bring these from the experiments he ran.  It was a great pity the PPP never picked this up and ran with it.  A lot of the documentation was there.  The F part of FCH had a lot of merit.  This would have head off the abject poverty seen among Guyana's farmers and some sugar workers could have been weaned into this type of a livelihood.

I guess there isn't a comparative advantage in growing onions in Guyana.  Perhaps cultivation of other crops are more profitable than onions.

I am happy to see Afro-Guyanese are excelling in agriculture farming. Since this is not the first good news about Afros and farming in Guyana, I have to ask why they haven't get this kind of recognition under the PPP?

A country depends on all its people to be engaged in something beneficial to themselves and others, whereas, it can lead to encouraging more people to do the same or engage in different activities for the good of the country.

PPP government experiment with Onion  somewhere in the Pakaraimas - it’s a costly venture and didn’t have a long shelf life.

Onion price on the world market is relatively cheap . Businesses buy in large quantity during harvest time to secure the low prices .

onions mostly are imported from Holland, China . When quantity is low on these suppliers the Canadian market is tapped into, however , Canada only produces large onion and Guyanese don’t like it .

congratulation to the farmer , I wish her all success .

It depends on de size of yo onion.

When exporting produce is it only one item that is sent or is it done in boxes, bags, crates. Just as coke in de poke seems farfetched but is not, same goes for coke in de onions.

This has nothing to do with Afro or Indo. It's an important achievement which some are reluctant to acknowledge. The next question should be what other crops that are currently being imported can be grown in Guyana? We forget that Guyana was once the breadbasket of the Caribbean. For the naysayers, how many pounds of onions were produced before???? Maybe I should be asking about another product and in kilograms.

It’s unbelievable to see something lil positive brings out so much negativity, especially from people without a stake in the game.   Guyana is not a basket because of the hand god dealt it, it’s made so by successive shithole govts and their lackeys who put down and ridicule other Guyanese because they are not their kith and kin.

Why this cannot be something for Guyana and the struggling farmers to make something out of?  If it does not pan out, well they gave it a try.

All you dumb f.uc.k naysayers, India is the second largest onion producer in the world.  Nigeria produces over 1 million tonnes.  These are countries same heat, humidity and general climate as Guyana.  Besides, these local farmers prove they can do it.    So you all, just stfu and let them try.  They aren’t asking you for anything.

I hope the GOG support them and impose duties on cheap imports dumped into Guyana.

First, let me congratulate Brother Rawle Medford. This is great news. I am originally from East Berbice, Corentyne and am very happy for Brother Rawle.

Guyanese have to be forced to purchase and support locally grown products. Base hit the nail on the head about implementing higher import taxes on agricultural products that can be grown locally. This can assist and encourage Guyanese farmers.

Successive PPP and PNC governments lacked foresight in encouraging the farming of locally grown produce. Changing attitudes can only start when imported goods are more expensive.

Only Fada Burnham encouraged us to grow and consume locally produced products.

Hope this open up the eyes of politicians in Guyana.

Thanks for admitting that the PPP destroyed Buxton.

Nonsense, the only thing the ppp destroyed were PNC sponsored terrorist dens and havens in buxton.

They under developed Buxton. I will try and  find a video that was posted here probably in 2010.

Can you imagine the farmer's family and the people in Guyana reading this thread and what they're thinking? Hope they realize it's those who fled who are mouthing off on their computers and belittling their countrymen's efforts and hard work.

I asked why Afro-Guyanese never get recognition for farming under the PPP government, but never get an answer.  This is a great effort and it must be applauded. I know Indo-Guyanese wants to take the crown for farming, but that shouldn't stop them from praising Afros for toiling the soil in desperate times in our country.

Is every friggin thing for you blackman versus coolie or PPP versus PNC? Don't you have a coconut branch broom? Pull one out and go play with fowl shit.
