The just-elected 15 other members of the Central Executive of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) includes three retired Guyana Defence Force (GDF) officers and five long-serving members of that political party.

Altogether, at least four of them are known supporters of Joseph Harmon who lost in his bid to become Chairman of the PNCR, based on unofficial results seen by Demerara Waves Online News.

They are former Chiefs-of-Staff, Retired Brigadier Edward Collins, Retired Rear Admiral Gary Best and Retired Lt. Col. Larry London as well as party stalwarts Clement Corlette, Cheryl Sampson, Jennifer Ferreira, Geneveive Allen, Mortimer Mingo, Amna Ally, Richard Vanwest Charles and Aubrey Norton.

Corlette is a former Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) Chairman, Sampson is a former head of the National Congress of Women (formerly Women’s Revolutionary Socialist Movement), Allen is currently Chairperson of Region Four, Mingo is Chairman of the Local Government Commission and former Region 10 Chairman, Ally is already the PNCR’s General Secretary, Vanwest Charles is the General Manager of the Guyana Water Inc and son-in-law of late PNCR Founder-Leader, President Forbes Burnham and Norton is a former PNCR General Secretary.

Of the more than 80 nominees for the Central Executive, former Chairman of the PNCR’s Youth and Students Movement, Christopher Jones topped the elected representatives with 382 votes followed by Norton with 328.

Also elected to the Central Executive are Dr. Karen Cummings, Thandi Mc Allister and Winston Felix who is the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration.

Vanwest Charles had endorsed the Alliance For Change in the weeks running up to the May, 2015 general elections, but from all accounts he has returned to the PNCR.  Vanwest Charles, London, Mc Allister and Norton all campaigned heavily for Minister of State, Joseph Harmon to be elected Chairman of the party. It is believed in some party circles that Ally was also in Harmon’s corner.

Up to recently, Norton was a presidential adviser on youth empowerment, but he has since been appointed Director of Migration at the Ministry of the Presidency’s Department of Citizenship and Immigration. Best is a former presidential advisor on the environment and up to recently he was vocal of reparations for the descendants of enslaved Africans.

The PNCR has already elected Volda Lawrence as its Chairman, Annette Ferguson as first Vice Chairman and Dr. George Norton as second Vice Chairman. Lawrence beat out Joseph Harmon and then incumbent Basil Williams for her party’s second highest elected post. David Granger and Ronald Bulkan were returned unopposed as leader and treasurer respectively.

The PNCR is yet to officially announce the results for the Central Committee, four days after more than 800 delegates cast ballots at that party’s 20th Biennial Delegates Congress.

Have you noticed the Central Committee of the PNC(R) don't elect the Leader or Chairman, vice Chairman and other officials of the Party. The Party election method for officials is still the same from the split of the PPP.

Is that transparent ???

PNCR used youths as “props” but very few elected to Central Executive – Jagdeo

Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo.

Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday accused the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) of again using youths as tokens at their just concluded Biennial Delegates Congress because the majority of the executive has been stacked with old people.

Jagdeo also observed that Volda Lawrence was elected Chairperson of her political party without a commanding majority of the just over 800 delegates who cast ballots in last Sunday’s internal elections. “What I do know is that not a single one of the three persons who contested commanded a majority of the delegates and that’s an extremely weak position to be in and to move forward in,” he said.

Jagdeo noted that Lawrence garnered 42 percent, Joseph Harmon 35 percent and Basil Williams about 22 percent.  “If you calculate what Volda got on the basis of the attendance of the delegates, her votes, then it’s under 35 percent of the delegates who attended the Congress voted for Volda Lawrence so that’s an extremely weak position to be in as a leader or the Chairman of your party,” he said.

Speaking at a news conference, the PPP General Secretary charged that youths were used as “props” in the run-up to the PNCR’s elections and then they were abandoned in the polling booths in favour of much older persons.

In terms of young people, only 38-year old Christopher Jones and 2nd Vice Chairperson, 40-year old Annette Ferguson and 37-year old Thandi Mc Allister were elected to sit on their party’s Central Executive. The others are in their 50s and 60s.

Comparing the PNCR to his PPP, Jagdeo said his party not only campaigns on the theme of youths but many young people have been elected to the Central Committee. “The outcome of their elections and the Central Committee now…we looked through the names and the majority of the people there, overwhelming majority, are people over 60 years and so once again, within the party and elsewhere, young people were just used as props,” said Jagdeo, a former President. He boasted that the PPP government included many youths, young attendees at its congress, elected to the central and executive committees.

Lawrence and Harmon specifically had targeted youths in their countrywide campaigns to party faithful. “I saw young people being used again as props- nice photo opportunities with young people- we saw that before 2015; a lot of young people in all these wonderful ads that they had…then the young people suddenly disappeared from the scene and they reappeared when there was a need for them to change their image so all of the candidates started taking pictures with young people again.

Why doesn't this man Jagdeo focus on HIS OWN party which apparently has ZERO transparency in such matters? He is complaining about a group which at least has some transparent process while he has NONE. WTF is wrong with these people?????????

All groups in all Guyana should demand transparency and accountability from their elected officials.

PPP doesn't have Chairman or Vice-Chairman. It has a General Secretary aka Leader whom the Central Committee elects. The CC also elects secretaries for specific portfolios like finance, agriculture, education etc.

Dad's army really haven't taken to Volda winning very well have they

Volda, Annette, Sherod Duncan, Charles Ramson and maybe Ralph if he's not to battle weary - Just go it alone

They would beat the PPP and PNCR - Both  are disgustingly woeful

The PNCR (lets forget this APNU) tag it's the same old PNCR - Getting scared because there old dogs are not getting there way and worried for there pensions

How is any new leader of the PPP going to follow the Jagdeo pony show - Just keep quiet you've had your chance and blew it . When the biggest drug dealing was paying teachers wages - Come on Now ...And Guyana was on the cusp of being a NARCO state under your watch...Who you kidding

We have to break the strangle hold these two parties have over us even if that means forcing them into a meaningful coalition (unlike the naive AFC)

The youth, amerindian and mixed vote is very much up for grabs
