Two elderly women are now traumatized after they were terrorised by two young men who barged into their shop, beating and robbing them. The incident occurred sometime before 09:00h on Saturday.

The victims are sisters, Ester and Nagama Venkatasammi called “Baby” of 43 Third Street, Tain, Port Mourant, Berbice. The perpetrators were said to be two young men, probably in their late teens to early 20s, and one of them was armed with a piece of “iron rod”.

Guyana Times understands the sisters, both in their 60s, live alone and operate a shop. They were badly beaten and robbed of a quantity of cash, phone cards and other items.

Initial reports received indicated that one of the young men went into the well known shop, which is located opposite Tain Primary School, and posed as a customer. He reportedly ordered a lemonade while his accomplice entered the house from a side door.

Speaking to this newspaper, a neighbour Basmattie Balkission said she was in her yard when she heard some moaning sounds coming from the women’s home and as such she alerted her son-in-law and went to check on the women.

“When we go, they were on the ground crying in pain; they couldn’t even talk hard;that’s how much pain they were in… they (perpetrators) beat them bad, man, lash up them head on the concrete and so,” the woman stated. She noted that one of the women was bleeding profusely in the head from the bashing they had received.

Balkission told this publication that one of the sisters, Ester, had gone to a grocery shop in the village and on her return, the two young men were already in the yard staking out. “The yard has a lot of bushes so nobody saw them there. When Ester come and call for the other sister to open the door ‘round the back, one of the boys followed her in and that’s how they get to go inside,” the woman stated.

The neighbour went on to say that while inside, the youngsters terrorised the two elderly sisters, hitting them and even bashing their heads on the concrete floor. She added that the perpetrators even ransacked the entire bottom flat before escaping.

Balkissoon further detailed that neighbours had seen the two perpetrators moments before heading into the shop but did not suspect anything. She added that when they got into the shop, there was another customer there whom they forced to lie on the ground but the man managed to escape and ran out to the Public Road.

After neighbours went to assist the sisters, the women were taken for medical attention at the Anamayah Memorial Hospital where they were kept overnight.

Ester is suffering from bodily pain as a result of the beating while her older sister “Baby” is suffering from head injuries she received from being bashed into the concrete.

They were discharged on Sunday, however, they were too traumatized to return home so they went to stay with a relative.
