President Bharrat Jagdeo addressing PPP/C supporters at the Bath Settlement rally.
Thousands of PPP/C supporters today turned up at another huge campaign rally at Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice as members of the Party outlined its plans for the country for the next five years.
The massive event was chaired by Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Priya Manickchand.
Taking the stage, PPP/C members and former Human Services Minister, Indra Chandarpal said that the victory of the PPP/C in 1992 took away hopelessness and brought democracy to Guyana.
Chandarpal said that the PPP/C has started the rebuilding process in a hostile environment; however, the Party has managed to live up to every manifesto promise.
She also recapped the progress made with regards to housing development, a sector that was closed down under the PNC regime.
Prime Minister Samuel Hinds said that the PPP/C has always been and will continue to be a Party of national unity.
President Bharrat Jagdeo said that the AFC and the APNU is becoming more desperate because they stand to face a massive defeat by the PPP in the next elections.
“We have brought Guyana from when there was no money in the Central Bank to now close to US $1B sitting in that same bank,” the Head of State said.
He also referred to the stable exchange rates and significant reductions in fiscal deficit and inflation rate. All of this he said, occurred while expenditure has been increased and the country’s revenue base has seen growth.
He said that the PPP/C restored the country to financial viability after the PNC left it in a state of bankruptcy.
PPP/C Presidential Candidate, Donald Ramotar outlining the Party’s plans for Guyana for the next five years
The President assured that once the Party gets back into Office, it will ensure that Guyana build its economy in many folds. He spoke of the large, lucrative deals that Government has recently concluded in the mining sector that will lead to growth by two percent.
He spoke too of the bright future ahead; making reference to some of the initiatives that are already on stream such as the laying of fibre optic cables to ensure affordable access to the internet, the One Laptop Per Family (OLPF) Programme, and plans for the sugar industry and agriculture as a whole.
He noted that investment will continue to be made heavily in drainage and irrigation and spoke of the benefits to be derived from the $3B Hope Canal, when completed. He reminded the crowd that the Opposition dismissed this project as, “a waste of money” but said that the PPP Government is committed to meeting the needs of farmers.

He also reminded that Government has paid back approximately US $1.7B in debt, and today only four percent of the country’s revenue goes towards the repayment of debt (lowest in the CARICOM), while the rest goes towards nation building.
The Head of State said that notwithstanding all the undeniable developments, the best years are yet to come and a Donald Ramotar-led Government will make this a reality.
“Our Party has a vision and we work hard every single day to change Guyana...Donald Ramotar has the vision and skills to run this country,” the President said.
He spoke of the ploy that is being pursued by the Opposition; whereby the AFC is only campaigning in areas that are known as PPP/C strongholds so as to reduce the Party’s votes and win a majority in Parliament.
He also reminded the voters that the PPP has given all Guyanese a very important weapon, which is the ballot paper. This freedom he said, came as a result of many people losing their lives.
“Do not squander this opportunity; you matter in Guyana, there was a time when you were not,” he said.
PPP Presidential Candidate, Donald Ramotar said that the AFC and the APNU are two sides of the same coin as their policies are the same, and that they are coming to the voters separately because they want to remove the PPP/C from Office like they did in the 1960s.
“One of the reasons why they changed their name from PNC to APNU is because of their track record,” Ramotar said.
He called on the Joint Services who will be voting tomorrow, to vote for continuity and said that they have no reason to support APNU or the AFC; urging them to look at their track records.
“We will reform and strengthen security by looking at it in its totality. We will give them the tools to fight dangerous bandits, and we are already reforming the judiciary which is also an important part of law enforcement,” Ramotar posited.
He reminded that the PPP was founded on the principle of national unity and it continues to be guided by that principle. He said that his Government will be ready to listen to the views of anyone as long as it is in the interest of national development.
