The late Daniel Goberdhan

Eight-month-old Daniel Goberdhan succumbed in India on Tuesday, last, despite efforts by doctors to save his life. He had undergone heart surgery.

Kaieteur News understands that Daniel Goberdhan was born with a complex Cyanotic Heart Disease and that apart from this, the child had multiple congenital defects.

With much pleading to the public and the invaluable assistance that they received from the Three Rivers Foundation, the Goberdhans were able to save enough money to transport the child to India for surgeries.

An evaluation revealed that the child had only one pumping chamber instead of two pumping chambers, this is known as a single ventricle heart while the normal heart has two ventricles.

Also the blood flow to the lungs was noticeably reduced as there was severe obstruction to blood going out into the lungs. This is referred to as Severe Pulmonary Stenosis.

Baby Daniel’s right lung artery was smaller than normal.

Apart from these severe cardiac issues, the child also had some non cardiac issues such as a Cleft Lip and Palate and Absent Spleen which reduces the capacity for the child to fight infections.

President of the Three Rivers Foundation, Jeanette Singh, informed this newspaper that counseling was done with Daniel’s mother, Sharmila Goberdhan, so as to inform her of the high risk of surgery which could result in death.

Daniel and his mother arrived in New Delhi on November 3, 2011 for surgery. The child died on November 8, 2011.

The child’s remains will be transported back to his native Suriname where a funeral service is expected to be conducted at his parents’ home. However, up until Thursday Mrs. Goberdhan had not yet departed India.
