US$2.2M hydro project for Kato awarded to B&J Civil Works

The Ministry of Public Infrastructure yesterday signed the contract for the “Design, Supply and Installation of 150kW Hydropower plant on the Cheung River, Kato Village, Region 8.”

Minister David Patterson hands over the contract to B & J Civil Works representative yesterday.

This contract was awarded to B & J Civil Works to the tune of US $2,251,880.

The funding of the project will be provided through the Inter-American Development Bank under the Sustainable Energy Programme for Guyana.
This project is expected to run for a period of 18 months with 12 months defects and liability period after the completion of the project.

The objective of this project is expected to provide the remote hinterland community of Kato, inclusive of the government facilities and the Kato Secondary School, with a relatively cheap and reliable source of power that will result in livelihood enhancements.

It was disclosed that homes that are located within the proximity of the distribution grid is expected to receive power in the initial stage of the project.

Additionally, at the school, electricity will be available in the evening for the kids to read, write and study.

The power will be available during the day at the school to facilitate the use of power tools and equipment for technical and vocational training. Power will also be used for the pumping of water to ensure proper sanitation in the dormitory facilities.

“The Government of Guyana through the Ministry of Public Infrastructure also envisages that the availability of power will also positively impact the development of the agriculture and agro-processing in the community.”

This project comprises three components – the construction of 150kW hydropower plant on the bank of the Cheung River. It will include wire, intake, headrace canal with sand trap, forebay, penstock and power house; the construction of a 13.8KV Transmission Network (Kato Hydro Station, Secondary School and Kato Village), and the construction of a 120V Distribution Network in the village.

Austria, Costa Rica, Canada plus many other countries have the expertise for small hydropower projects.

IT IS AN ILLEGAL CONTRACT. AFTER THE ELECTION PATTERSON MUST BE JAILED!!!!!

That nonsense will never happen, he will have no problem from his government in office. The Granger govt just got a major boost with this one. As we see, no one listens to the PPP, their past is coming back to haunt them.

Instead of being left in the dark these people should have already been assisted without an election on the horizon.

So does the Swiss. In fact Bibi and me visited the town where Aluminum was first smelted. There is a small hydropower plant built just for that. As you travel down the Rhein, every 10 or so miles is a small plant. The country developed on those.  Now they have four big nukes to go!

Guyana should follow the model of the small European nations.

However of note before 5000 BCE, aluminum were used in the Middle East for making elegant pottery, its use was also in the production of numerious chemicals and medicine.

Development of small hydropower works are indeed useful to serve the needs of localized communities and immediate surroundings.

For a stable long-term hydropower source to specifically meet the needs for most of Guyana, development of the Amaila Hydropower project is apt.

Development of the larger projects on the Mazaruni, Cuyuni and other areas exceeds Guyana's monetary capabilities.

Brazil's proposal to be involved with such developments would be apt. In this situation, Brazil will be the builder/owner of the project with the focus on exports to Brazil while providing a stable source for Guyana.

Some of this I remember from High School Physics, that was before I dropped out at 3rd form.  Then I lived in Schaffhausen/Neuhausen for several years. Visited the museum and learned a lot there. Bibi loved the place!
