Chronicle staff threaten strike action over $50,000 bonus

Employees attached to the State-owned Guyana Chronicle newspaper have threatened to take strike action if they are not paid the $50,000 Christmas bonus that was recently announced by Government for all public servants earning less than $500,000 per month.

Guyana Times understands that the company’s Board of Directors held an emergency meeting with the newspaper’s staff late Thursday afternoon, during which the workers were informed that the company was not in a financial position to pay the $50,000 bonus, in addition to the five per cent bonus that is retroactive to January this year, which was already paid.
Furthermore, the employees were told that even though the company is publicly owned, it is not a Government agency and therefore does not qualify as a semi-autonomous agency.

However, this newspaper understands that during the meeting, staff members suggested that the Board put arrangements in place to have the Government Information Agency (GINA) pay its bill of some $70 million owed to the newspaper for the publication of ads.

Guyana Times was further told that at the end of the meeting, the Boards promised to write Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, who also holds the post of Public Information Minister, for him to intervene in the matter.

When contacted on Thursday, acting General Manager of the Guyana Chronicle, Moshamie Ramotar opted not to comment on the matter, expect to say that management is addressing the concerns raised by the employees.

Meanwhile, Chairwoman of the newspaper’s Board of Directors, Jean La Rose, explained to this publication that in order for the Chronicle staff to be paid the Christmas bonus, there needs to be certain conditions in place.

“Unfortunately, those conditions are not in place (that is) the company has to be financially viable,” she stated. The Chairwoman outlined that the $50,000 bonus was recently announced and not budgeted for, as such, certain measures would have to be in place to facilitate the payments. She noted that this was related to the staff during the meeting.

La Rose reminded that the company she took over was heavily indebted. “That situation remains, we are trying to get out of that but there is a hefty sum of money owed to Chronicle by GINA for advertising and a number of things,” she disclosed.

Asked whether any steps were previously taken to recover the money from GINA, the Chairwoman responded in the positive but noted that this is still in process.
