Cheddi Jagan has become an afterthought

Kaieteur News – The absence of the top echelons of the PPP/C leadership, past and present, from the Babu John last weekend is inexcusable. It is a sign of political conceit and insult to the memory of the party’s patriarch.
It has been traditional, each year, for the PPP to host an annual activity at Babu John, Port Mourant, to mark the death anniversary of the late Dr. Cheddi Jagan. It has also been traditional for the top leadership of the party, and for the PPP/C President to be in attendance.
The PPP is the party of Cheddi Jagan. He was the central figure in the party for more than 50 years. Those who presently hold political power in Guyana are indebted to Cheddi, eternally indebted. This is not the way to treat someone to whom so much is owed.
Of some consolation was that this fact was acknowledged by Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha. He conceded in his remarks at the Crematorium site that it was due to Dr. Jagan’s teachings and legacy that the PPP/C was able to overcome the recent attack on democracy.
He was also quoted as saying that the PPP/C has remained true to the founding principles of the great leader. Not many are so sure about this.
It is inexcusable for the PPP/C to organize the annual Babu John memorial, and for none of the senior political leaders of the PPP/C, including the venerable Vice President and the President to be present. It is shocking and it is a disgrace.
The old guard of the PPP/C must be outraged that Cheddi has become an afterthought. Such a low-level event is undeserving of Cheddi, especially considering the fanfare that is being raised about the struggle for democracy.
The present cabal, which runs the PPP, are deluding themselves into believing that they are heroic figures who saved Guyana from the clutches of dictatorship. They had resigned themselves to being cheated out of power after the APNU+AFC dragged out the declaration of the results of the March elections for five months.
The PPP leadership could not be sure that APNU+AFC would have stepped aside. The PPP leadership had become demoralized by the long drawn out court battles and the stubbornness of the APNU+AFC to comply with the democratic will of the people.
Were it not for the then United States Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo, who made it clear that Granger had to step aside, the PPP/C would have been in deep distress today. They were never sure how the election crisis would have panned out and this was evident in the time it took for them to name their Ministers and to put measures in place to fight the pandemic and to produce a Budget. There was little planning for getting into office, so unsure was the PPP/C as to how the election crisis would have ended.
The ultimate hero of democracy in Guyana was Cheddi Jagan. He never gave up during the 28 years when he and his party were cheated out of office. And this is how his party repaid his sacrifice: with a low-level death anniversary commemoration.
It is not as if the pandemic stood in the way of the top leadership of the party attending the hurriedly put-together event. The President attended public events organized over the same weekend for a sugar worker, who was killed even before he was born. He turned the sod for a hotel. He even went to the Everest Ground, where hundreds of spectators and players were breaching the COVID-regulations, during a cricket tournament.
So why could the upper echelons of the PPP leadership not be at Babu John for the death anniversary of the patriarch of the party. This is gross disrespect to those who established and developed the party.
The party’s matriarch, Mrs. Janet Jagan, died a bitter woman. She was deeply aggrieved after she was called a private citizen by a party leader, whom she virtually handpicked for the position of President. She died gravely concerned that certain individuals were being catapulted to high office and those persons had played no part in the party’s struggle for free and fair elections.
The old guard of the party was deactivated after the 2015 defeat. They should now recognize the dangers, which is facing Cheddi’s legacy by a group of leaders whose policies are completely at odds with the working class philosophy for Cheddi. It is time to rout the charlatans who have seized the reins of control of the party. Otherwise, Cheddi will turn from an afterthought to an afterglow.

Read and think carefully about what has happened to the PPP.  I saw this a long time ago. Others did too but they were consumed by the system and had become dependent on "rewards" from the state through Jagdeo.  Ideologically, today,  the Coalition is closer to Jagan than the PPP.

I've been out of Guyana since '68, Tota, so enlighten me on.who Janet had handpicked for President and who were the ones being catapulted to high.office! I have my suspicions about the Prez, but I'm not sure about the others!

There was 1953 suspension of the Constitution.

Independence.

Burnham's Dictatorship.

1992 PPP victory and its 23 years of denying the country of a workable constitution. Its manuvering of individuals to be in control of the Presidency and others to be confused to the point of self exile.

And then Granger, a decisive bigot against women, indians and young people. The uninspiring gentleman with his handpicked lefftenant Harmon as SELECTED President to run the show did not even do much for black ppl juss as his mentor did not do either. A disappointing fella further DISAPPOINTED ME in not sticking to his guns and holding onto the power he seized for six months. Had he stuck to his guns, the country would have been better on a decent path. He would have forced a discussion with concessions.

Waht we have with Mohammad Irfaan Ali, is a puppy who will never be matured to a dog. It is a tyrannical system of government with Black ppl marginalized. Indians doan mind it at all. Dey will be happy as pig in shit.

Black ppl were once a people of tolerance.

The White Lady had Sam Hinds playing musical chairs while Jagdeo was hoisted to prominence. The man is charmed as Genghis Khan, from Junior Minister of Finance, Cheddie made him Minister of the Portfolio. And Ali was deemed corrupt and displaced. Da man Persaud had Janet's ears after Cheddie passed. Ali was a finances star, not quite into belly of the PPP but considered a possible successor. That thought eranged the low educatives and they gang up on poor Ali. Cheddie being the fool he was, fell for the pussor pussor. It was like 1955 Congress all over again, Janet muss have denied sex to Cheddie and suh he had to take her advice. Jagdeo, I remembered as the very brilliant economist and touted to be the ultimate adviser to Third World Countries to ease them out of poverty wid his economic wizardry.

Guyana has no place to go but under the Altantic Ocean, perhaps like Alantis.

Thanks, seig, but you have me confused with the rambling and use of words like pussor pussor, eranged, etc! Please answer specifically! Is Jagdeo really a 'very good economist'? Says who? And.Ali a finance star who was deemed corrupt and displaced? Was Jagdeo chosen for.President by Janet? Did he.refer to her as a privale citizen to.her regret? I can understand Sam Hinds being.bypassed to.please the more numerous Indos in the party because he was not representative of them, being black! Who were the low educatives that ganged up on poor Ali?

Would you say that someone with a first degree in economics from Lumumba University in Russia is a very good economist?  I wouldn't even call someone with a first degree in economics an economist.

Pardon my ignorance but what is a first degree? An ordinary B.A?

Yes, in our system a BA is a first degree.   In the Russian system a MA is a first degree. Thousands of people have first degrees in economics.  Do we call them economists?   Usually that's reserved for people with doctorates.  I wouldn't go around calling students graduating with a BA in economics economists.

I think you have been led to believe economists are anything.but con artists! Inflation, IMO, is caused by demand exceeding supply in goods! Coupled with supply in labour exceeding demand, guaranteeing poverty! I supported Trump! He wanted to keep the migrants out! That's why the American workers loved him! Those who voted.against him were deliberately misled by those who have everything to gain! I.know! I'm an immigrant, too, but I came here legally! How do millions of illegal immigrants help the economy? They ought to be let in according to the need for workers and the effect on those already working! The fat cats aren't concerned about the effect on housing, medical care, schooling, transportation, taxation, etc. Electing Biden is something Americans.will regret! Sure, Trump made a lot of mistakes, said a lot of stupid things but he had never held office before and didn't know how to be a slick do-nothing politician! Enough! I'm straying!

DG, why have your products manufactured by cheap labor in foreign countries, and then nobody buys because they.have no.jobs and no.money to buy? Let them into the US and everybody is cheap labor! "Whether they buy or steal is not.my concern! The law will deal with them if they steal!"

Maybe law enforcement.will steal, too! Then there is bribing, graft, etc!

Other presidents indeed made a few errors/mistakes.

With Trump, there are loads and loads of errors & mistakes which occurred on a daily basis.

Information from notable sources have indicated that Trump made about 31,000 false statements; an average of about 25 false statements a day.

Now, where have I heard that before? It works! Eureka, the propanada works! It was a good idea we had, owning the media!

DG, if you're still there, I wonder if you could translate into English the words of Asha Bhosle's song for me "Aaja jaanejan mere meherban"? You can find it on YouTube! I'm curious about the effects it had on me even though I don't know her language! Mitwah suggested I ask you!

I hope that the PPP put a stop to the worship of Cheddie Jagan.  Burnham and his leadership realized that it was better for Cheddie Jagan to remain the leader of the PPP because he and his Romanian/Hungarian wife constant fighting with other East Indian leaders to maintain their leadership of the Guyanese East Indian people had severely weakened the Guyanese East Indian political leadership that was fighting against them.

"About 25 false statements a day", huh? Then he.couldn't have had.time for anything else to do! False statements must have taken some time to prepare! The Coalition is closer to Jagan because they are still in the pink and the PPP learned from their mistakes when they practiced socialism. Even DR. Jagan apologized for being a Marxist/Leninist in Toronto. I heard him myself. That was in 1992.  The Coalition is moving one step forward and 6 steps backward.

Tota, I know that you liked the PPP and the Jagans. Nobody admired them than you did, so stop being a fool and get on with the Program.

You can also talk some sense to your buddy Mitwah. Just because you do not like Jagdeo, you are going to take it out on Indo_Guyanese.

Jagan told Prashad in 1990 that true communism will eventually win. My issue with Cheddie Jagan and his Romanian/Hungarian wife is not politics it is with their continuous fights with other Guyanese East Indian political leaders.  Jagan and his Romanian/Hungarian wife wanted to die holding on to political power over Guyanese East Indian people.  For them, it was not about money it was about power.  Absolute power corrupts the mind absolutely just as absolute money does.
