The American Chamber of Commerce in Guyana (AmCham Guyana) will seek to improve business in Guyana through the promotion of America-Guyana trade and business.

AmCham Guyana was officially launched on Monday evening at the Marriott Hotel. President of the organisation, Zulfikar Ally committed to fostering relations between the private sector and government.

“We are aware that Guyana means business and with AmCham Guyana, we can assure you it will not be business as usual. We want to bring new ideas new technologies and new skills to the market and be the leader in private sector change,” Ally, who is the Corporate Secretary of the Queens Atlantic Investment Incorporated (QAII), said.

He added, collaborating with the government and key agencies like GO-INVEST is key to ensuring these objectives are met. AmCham will facilitate businesses that are seeking to invest and build Guyana through its next growth trajectory as the country enters a new era in her history, Ally noted.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carl Greenidge who is currently performing the functions of Prime Minister, encouraged the organisation to pay special attention be trading beyond primary resources, especially services.

“We are one of those states where our exports of services are negligible and that is something that is important. It is an indication to you one, of our aspirations as a government and our hope that you as businessmen, Guyanese or US business, understands our prosperity also depends on the diversification of the Guyana economy,” Minister Greenidge said.

Minister of Business, Dominic Gaskin, noted the introduction of AmCham Guyana could increase business between the two countries. He also gave assurances that the government is working to eliminate the bureaucracy of doing business in Guyana.

“Our government is taking action to automate many of the inefficient business processes that are currently causing grief and encouraging corrupt practices in Guyana. It is a slow process but that process has started,” Minister Gaskin assured.

AmCham Guyana is a voluntary association of US enterprises and individuals doing business in a country as well as firms and business executives of that country who operate in the US.

US Ambassador to Guyana Perry Holloway noted this is the perfect time to launch AmCham through the promotion and creation of US-Guyana trade and business opportunities.

“Guyana’s private sector is carving out its role in a new and exciting era in the country’s development trajectory,” Ambassador Holloway said.

There are 17 local and US companies that are on the board of directors of AmCham Guyana which is seeking to help promote corporate social responsibility and sustainable development in Guyana.

AmCham Guyana will also promote innovation and technological transfer between business, encourage investment in research and development, facilitate the development and transfer of skills and knowledge provide training opportunities geared towards improved productivity, create new employment opportunities, produce high quality products which can be profitably sold at globally competitive prices and in this way contribute to a reinvigorated and vibrant private sector.
