President Joseph Biden

US President Joe Biden today said he looks forward to working with Guyana on addressing security concerns that threaten the “shared interest” of the two countries.

In a message to President Irfaan Ali to mark Guyana’s 51st anniversary as a republic, Biden also expressed the desire for a stronger relationship founded on “shared principles of good governance, prosperity, and security”.

The message as released by the US Embassy follows:

Dear Mr. President:

t is my pleasure to send congratulations to the people of Guyana as you celebrate 51 years as a republic on February 23.

Guyana is a strong democracy, and I look forward to strengthening our bilateral relationship based on shared principles of good governance, prosperity, and security.  The challenges of COVID-19 affect all of us and make clear that we must advance our partnership to face the global pandemic, together.  In the year ahead, I look forward to our teams addressing the issues and security concerns that threaten our shared interests, while building on Guyana’s economic growth and development.

I wish you and all the people of Guyana a joyous and safe Mashramani.

Sincerely,

Joseph R. Biden, Jr.

Indian President Ram Nath Kovind has written to President Dr Irfaan Ali extending best wishes for Guyana’s 51st Republic Anniversary.

Indian President Ram Nath Kovind

On behalf of the Government and the people of India and on my own behalf, I extend warm greetings and felicitations to your Excellency, the Government and people of Guyana on the occasion of your Republic Day.

India attaches immense importance to our ties with Guyana. Our two countries share warm and friendly relations with growing engagements in the political, economic, commercial and cultural fields. I am confident that our partnership will be further strengthened in the years to come.

India’s gesture of solidarity by way of extending medical supplies and protective gear last year, to assist the Government and friendly People of Guyana in their fight against the COVID-19 pandemic is symbolic of our close relations. India will continue to be a reliable partner of Guyana in the collective fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

I convey my best wishes to Your Excellency’s good health and well-being and continued progress and prosperity of the friendly people of Guyana.

Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.

This is regrettable.  It didn't have to be that way. But there is something about that country that keeps us tied to it.  Yes, maybe it because that is where our "navel string bury". Let's hope and pray that Guyana's future will be brighter than its past.  Happy Mashramani.

After 51 years more than 1/2 of Guyana resides outside of Guyana.

I was watching a video of the seawall by the bandstand that I found advertised here. It took me back to my childhood days, walking by the bandstand, climbing the steps and walking on that promenade. Evenings we used to sit there getting the nice seabreeze before driving back home and getting a sound sleep. Saturday evenings it was packed. GT was a beautiful little town.

I guess these memories are what keeps us tied to it @Totaram . Exposure to the hectic life in these developed nations in which we live makes us more appreciative of those simple days.

A nation ruined by socialism, brought there by Jagan and his clown posse. Father of the nation my ass. He started the destruction. If only we had taken a more moderate approach, sensitive to the big dog in the region - the US and remained neutral.

The Case for Socialism in Guyana

Both the PPP and the PNC would go on to officially adopt socialist views of convenience in their constitutions during the 1970s. Former PPP supporter Ralph Ramkarran explains:

“The Constitution of the PPP was adopted in 1977. It was designed to entrench the ideology of Marxism-Leninism and assist in the transformation of the Party to a Leninist party of the new type. The objectives were to officially adopt and promote Marxist-Leninist ideology and organizational methods.”

Burnham and the PNC, whose political origins lay in the PPP, also took a leftward turn in the 1970s. To lead Guyana into independence Burnham and the PNC had to initially convince America and Britain that they posed less of a threat than the seemingly radical PPP. However, by the 1970s, the PNC government took a sudden turn towards nationalization of the economy and development of international relations with Communist nations such as Cuba, China and the U.S.S.R. Concurrent with the seizure of the sugar and bauxite industries and establishing relations with Communist nations, the PNC codified socialism into its constitution as well as into the nation’s constitution.

Wow! That a huge hefty couple. Perhaps the veranda was reinforced for the occasion. Looks like they eat out all the food and leave the poor people starving. Perhaps the whole cow. That button on fat boy's jacket is going to snap at any moment.

@Former Member Jagan brought that socialist crap there. And who was his disciple? Forbes. Where do you think he learnt it from? and the PNC followed suit.

Forbes was a megalomaniac but he did have some foresight with the need to buy local and save foreign currency etc. But in a corrupt place, nothing can progress.

50+ years of independence and nothing. Shithole. Bunch of arrogant, corrupt people at every level.

Forbes Burnham visited Czechoslovakia in 1947 as President of the West Indies Student's Union in England and the delegation leader to the then World Youth Festival.

Forbes Burnham learned that and other things on his own initiative.

Last night an acquaintance celebrated his 55th year since he migrated from Guyana. He said it was a blessed day when he boarded the ship at the GT wharf setting sail to England. He only went back once to Guyana and that was to get married.  He thinks that the PPP versus the PNC , same difference.

There's one thing that keeps worrying me, seig, that.is Jagdeo's single-minded touting of this $200 to $500.million cost of the gas-to-shore project despite Ms.Janki's disapproval of it! She is an expert on this! He is not! Yet the party goes along with his arguments. There is lots of room for corruption in this and, further, even if they are successful, with no.unforeseen problems, which I.doubt there will.be, they.will.still have to build an.oil.refinery to service newly.developing industries in need of the refined oil That is, if they.want to avoid Nigeria's experience of selling its.oil.cheap and buying expensive refined products of its own oil! Some economist is Jagdeo!

It seems to me that only Jagdeo, his party and the oil company.will benefit from this stupid venture!

I'm still.willing to give Ali a chance but.he seems to allow Jagdeo too much say in decisions! Is Ali.really.President or Jagdeo's boy? The tail wagging the dog? Send Jagdeo as Ambassador to Cuba where Uncle Sam will have a closer look at his Machiavellian scheming! This country is still subject to.US policies and those policies are, US interests are paramount!
