The Manager of an East Coast Demerara packaging plant on Thursday pleaded guilty to conspiracy for trafficking in a quantity of cocaine in coconut milk that was intercepted in Malaysia earlier this month.

A former employee of the same company, New So Coco, pleaded not guilty to being in possession of two sealed tins of cocaine-in- coconut milk and he was remanded to prison.(De owner of New So Coco is close to Jagabat and was posing with Irfan at Guyexpo recently)

Loknauth Danesur of 1 Coldingen, East Coast Demerara pleaded guilty to trafficking in an unknown quantity of cocaine and he was sentenced to four year imprisonment and fined GUY$30,000.

Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine Beharry noted that Danesur, who was the manager of the packaging plant, did not waste the court’s time and he pleaded guilty.

Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor, Oswald Massiah told the court that between August 1 and November 20, Danesur, using his expertise, conspired to conceal the narcotic in coconut milk cans.

Danesur told the court that he had no idea where the cocaine was going but he had been paid GUY$100,000(Paid by who?????) to do the job and had been promised GUY$1 million more when the cocaine would have reached its destination. He said he needed the money because he has three children and he was working for insufficient money.

Former employee of New So Coco, 25-year old Vijay Bisraj also known as Amar and Dinesh denied the cocaine trafficking charge. His lawyer, Shellon Boyce, said two cans were found in the premises where he lives at 57 First Street, Section B, Non Pareil but he was not at home and several persons have access to the building. He was remanded to prison until December 7 when he would appear in the Vigilance Magistrates’ Court.

The CANU Prosecutor told the court that Bisraj worked 10 years at the packaging plant before leaving to become a fisherman. Massiah alleged that the accused used his expertise in sealing cans to conspire with unknown persons to go to the factory to conceal the cocaine in the cans. The prosecutor alleged that Bisraj was in possession of the two cans of cocaine because he was ‘shortchanged’ for the job and so he took them.

CANU officials say the two men were charged in connection with the discovery of 76 kilogrammes of liquefied cocaine in coconut milk in Malaysia. Authorities there said the ship was on its way to Mozambique when Malaysian authorities, acting on a tip off seized 16 cartons containing 384 tins allegedly containing coconut milk and pineapples. The cocaine was worth US$7.1 million.

Malaysian authorities said the tip-off came from the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (USDEA).
