Jagan and Burnham left racial scars.

The racial scars were very much there.  Its just that people "knew their place" so didn't argue with the white man.  But there were many simmering resentments.

Portuguese and red people ruled Georgetown getting all of the best private sector jobs.  Bookers looked like a store in England and Fogarty's didn't hire people darker than a paper bag.  Same thing getting into St. Roses unless one had high status.  Religious affiliations governed who found work as teachers.

Mits,

What year was this? I notice the announcer referred to Guyana as a "rapidly progressing country". I wonder what was characterized as "progress" at that time and how far or progressive Guyana has become since then?

I did not see any railways when I was there in April, but this to me seems like an easy, cheap and reliable way to travel, considering all the problems associated with the bridges today. Why did Guyana abolish the use of railways?

Do you have any clips on Burnham and Jagan? OR parliamentary debates and their trip to London before independence?

Also, do you have any speeches by the two men going back to that period...Burnham look like he had some great oratorical skills which resonated with his supporters (I would say the same for Dr. Rodney).

I dont want to start a war here between the Afros and Indos on GNI, but I am inclined to believe that had Burnham not have to worry about getting reelected he would have done some good for Guyana, given his political ideology, education and vision, which was different from Jagan.

I am curious to know how some of the older more mature and knowledgeable folks here feel about this...Gilly, Baseman, D2, Carib, Django...etc.

HM The Queen Visits British Guiana, 1966. I have a cup from this visit.

I just happen to find this clip.  Perhaps Django, Gilly or et al can help with your other questions.

Jagan's tragic mistake was his embrace of communist ideology and his willingness to flaunt it in the face of the very "imperialists" from who he is seeking independence...at a time when America was in the midst of a Cold War...not a good strategy on the part of Jagan.

From everything I have read so far, he seem like a very naive person searching his way and not fully understanding the extent the British will go to remove him from office. Burnham, of course, was calculating, and he seized the moment.

Banna, stop being so LAZY!!!! Both videos have the years on them. READ before you ask stupid questions!!!! You started a thread requesting info and it ran to 10+ pages. You never returned to it.

Where do you expect anyone here to find the info YOU need? People read and research. Do the same. You are a freaking waste of time with your lazy ass self! Bloody dunce!

"Banna, stop being so LAZY!!!! Both videos have the years on them. "

Yo, Lizzy, why you always so quick to put a tongue-lashing on people? I miss the dates on the video. Calm down, drink some maaby.

"People read and research. Do the same. "

Its one thing to do the research. I am a moments guy, hoping to get the info as I am on the thread, rather than going back to read the thread days later.

But you are missing the point. I raise these questions because research does not tell the whole picture. Videos are good primary source materials because the info is coming directly from the "horse's mouth" so to speak. Also, people who were there can give eyewitness account which might give a different perspective that is not always available from available research.

In addition, these videos are rear, and dont seem that easy to find. If Mits can find the time to share them, then we can all enjoy the "free ride".

So, without sounding obtuse, you have any particular insight to the questions, or you gon continue to derail the man's thread?

Thanks for posting Mits. People lived humble lives back then. Many in NA have too much today and have forgotten their humble roots.

Jagan and Burnham left racial scars.

Is that New Amsterdam (there is no sound)?

People still struggling for water in Guyana.

Utube   'PATHE films on British Guiana' , etc for more footage. Some PATHE footage seldom have audio, because it was raw footage without audio for documentaries, with audio commentaries dubbed later in a studio.

Iguana is correct  in his comments regarding you starting a thread and after nine pages of comments by others, you did not return, or contribute.

I recently asked the meaning of a word and a poster I know said, 'Google it'.

When you start a thread and don't return after nine pages of comments by others, it is perceived that you are getting posters on GNI to do your research.  As you know, this is a discussion forum and if you continue to act in the previous manner, some posters will seldom respond to your post.

This is my opinion and it would have been better to ignore this matter, with you trying to understand your  consequences.   So try to learn the inner workings of this site, before you get into more shit with other posters.

Some of us come here to relax and share our British Guiana experiences  and not to do research for others.

International university students and people in India and other countries read this site. They don't post, but use specific information  for documentation.
