Vincent Fortune and his close relatives on his birthday

Vincent Fortune, a blind one-armed resident of Noitgedacht Village, Wakenaam Island celebrated his 81st birthday on October 6, last.

Fortune lost his sight and his right hand while using dynamite to blast for fish in the Cuyuni River in 1965. At that time he was employed with a company that blasted rocks in the interior.

This did not deter Fortune from living an independent life. He is able to wash and clean his house, make pointer brooms, and dig the kernel of coconuts to make coconut oil. He also does his own laundry and lives all by himself.

He visits his relatives in the village regularly.

For his 81st birthday several of his nieces and great nieces gathered to give him a special treat.
