Five days after a wanted bulletin was issued for Salim “Black Salim” Bacchus in connection with the gunning down of Narcotics Police Detective Jirbahan Dianand, he surrendered Tuesday in the company of his lawyer.
“He is in police custody assisting with the investigations,” Guyana Police Force spokesman, Senior Superintendent, Whitney Bacchus said in a statement.
Bacchus turned himself in, accompanied by his lawyer, Ramesh Rajkumar.
Police have said that they wanted to question Bacchus about the killing of the detective.
Dianand was shot dead in his car on near Jackson Creek, Corentyne on September 14.
Bacchus was among four men who had been arrested and charged in connection with a 40 kilogramme cocaine bust in November 2011. He was acquitted in June 2012 but the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) later appealed that decision.
Kaieteur News has reported that one of the detainees in the shooting of a taxi driver Jermaine Rover near Moleson Creek, Corentyne has confessed being in the company of the killer on the night of September 13.
When the perpetrator arrived at Dianand’s car, he shot him instead of handing over a bag of money.
The newspaper reported that the detainee told investigators that he had stolen the killer’s weapon from where it was hidden with the intention of killing him but he was not brave enough to do so.
