Windies women trounce Australia to win T20 cup

KOLKATA,  (Reuters) – Fifties from Hayley Matthews and Stafanie Taylor powered West Indies to their first women’s World Twenty20 title today, their eight-wicket win at Eden Gardens ending three-times defending champions Australia’s dominance in the tournament.

Matthews (66) and captain Taylor (59) added 120 for their opening stand as West Indies chased down a 148-run target with three balls to spare for their first win against the Southern Stars in nine attempts in World Twenty20.

Deandra Dottin, who took two wickets for 33, remained unbeaten on 18 to see West Indies through and spark wild celebrations among her team mates who were joined by several members of the men’s side in a celebratory dance.

“We didn’t get the start we wanted. In the first three overs we only scored three runs but it was good to keep wickets in hand,” Taylor, who was named player of the tournament, told reporters.

“We just said: ‘We could do this, just stay here and bat through’.

“I don’t think it’s quite sunk in as yet. We have a good feeling right now but I think when it really hits us that’s when we will know.”

Australia’s Elyse Villani and captain Meg Lanning had both hit 52 and added 77 for the second wicket to take their side to 148 for five after they won the toss and opted to bat.

Dottin gave away just one run in the final over which according to Lanning was a crucial moment in the match.

“It was certainly a pivotal moment I guess,” Lanning said. “I think we needed 160-plus on that wicket and we certainly set ourselves up to get to that mark.

“We just probably slowed a little bit towards the end including that final over. That probably gave the West Indies a little bit of momentum heading into their batting innings.”

AUSTRALIA WOMEN 148 for five off 20 overs (Meg Lanning 52, Elyse Villani 52, Ellyse Perry 28; Deandra Dottin 2-33)

WEST INDIES WOMEN 149 for two off 19.3 overs (Hayley Matthews 66, Stafanie Taylor 59)

Why did race had to spoil this celebration. There is a brown man in the team and he was instrumental in the break through. This is no friking Blackman alone win.

FC you are a hypocrite. Read your earlier post.

In sports the dutty stinking heart will still be there for a few on this forum.

In cricket, a win is a win. With that, I congratulate the WI on their victory. After Gayle out, there were disappointment on the sluggish batting. On the last two overs, the team mates in the stadium had doubts of winning. It was the last 3X6s that save the day for the WI. They could have lost the game to England. As I said before, I no longer backing the WI team, win or lose. They are a constant embarrassment to cricket in general.

So, why when I call it as I see it, I am being labeled as a racist? Double standards on this BB? When I do it next time and people criticize me, all I'll have to say 'Guh scratch you balls someweh else'.

Champion......Champion.......Champion.......

It's a clean sweep for the West Indies -

men's, women's and Under-19s, all World T20 champions.

Delight for the Windies but Ben Stokes and England are distraught..

This is all nice Jalil bai. But West Indies still need to improve their test, World Series and World Cup cricket performances. That is where lies the real bragging rights. Hopefully they can get back to the West Indies of old.

Ksazma,

Test cricket will soon be a thing of the past.

60 Overs will find it hard to stay alive...

The shorter version is the future and here to stay.

Cricket is no longer the gentleman's game where you enjoy

Breakfast, Lunch, Tea, Dinner & Drinks together everyday.

Soft Ball Cricket is getting very popular with both Players and fans too.

When is the last time you watched cricket or followed cricket? The World Series is currently played by baseball teams and the former World Series Cricket (Kerry Packer) has been defunct for decades. T20 is where it's at right now. Read about series like the IPL, Big Bash and CPL and see the fans showing up at these games and money being invested. Who wants to sit and watch paint dry or a five day cricket match?

Even so Mars...Test cricket dominance is still the true measure of a team...fans may not flock to West Indies matches in the Caribbean, but test cricket still draws in India, Australia, England...

T20 is fun cricket and it brings in the big bucks....but to dominate in tests is where it's at...

T20 only create fleeting memories...but I am sure you remember memorable lifetime moments from test cricket

I have memorable moments from test cricket when I was a child and my father took me to Bourda. It's nostalgic because I was a child bonding with my father. I hardly ever watch test cricket these days and even if I did they would not leave any lasting memories. My attention span is too short to even watch boring test cricket for one day much less five. Besides, who has the time to sit for five days in front of a TV watching boring test cricket and many times the game ends in a draw.

On the other hand, it will probably take a while for me to forget seeing Carlos Brathwaite launch 4 sixes in a row off of Stokes. The ending of that game was real excitement for me and many other WI fans. Test cricket does not generate that level of excitement. Maybe only for old fuddy duddies whose hearts cannot handle the thrill of T20.
