APNU’s failure to unveil manifesto sign of gross disrespect for Guyanese - President Jagdeo

President Bharrat Jagdeo this evening joined the PPP/C Presidential Candidate, Donald Ramotar, Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Dr. Roger Luncheon, and Ministers Clement Rohee and Dr. Jennifer Westford at a public meeting chaired by Presidential Advisor on Community Development, Odinga Lumumba at the Stabroek Market Square.
The Head of State emphasised the importance of the November 28 polls in securing a brighter future for all Guyanese.
He noted that with mere days away from the elections, the public is yet to hear about APNU’s plans for the next five years. This he said, is a sign of gross disrespect for voters and the country as a whole, as they are in effect saying that, “we want you to take a blind leap of faith in us not because of our track record but because of who we are.”
He said that no serious party campaigning to win an election, will not inform the voting public of how they plan to take care of the country’s children and women or how they will create jobs, secure investments, and unite all Guyanese.
“The PPP/C Government has outlined every plan for the next five years to show where we want to take Guyana,” the President said.
Government has clearly outlined its vision for the country in several innovative polices such as the National Development Strategy, the Poverty Reduction Strategy, Competitiveness Strategy and the Low Carbon Development Strategy,
The Head of State told the supporters that the architect that the APNU said is working on their manifesto is Carl Greenidge, under whose tenure during the PNC regime, saw the demise of the economy in the 1990s.
He also reminded of Greenidge’s last budget speech in the National Assembly when he admitted that Guyana was a bankrupt country as during that time 94 percent of revenue was spent on servicing debt, leaving a meagre six percent to meet the needs of the country.
He added that the PPP/C in 1992, inherited a country that had to borrow money to repay debts, a situation that no longer exists as today only four percent of the country’s revenue goes towards servicing debt. As a result, the country can now spend more to offer better social services (health, education, housing, water and security) to Guyanese.
The 2011 manifesto will see Government building on its current achievements, as the President noted that Guyana still has a far way to go and his Party is fully prepared with its plan to ensure that it gets there.
He noted that within the space of about 15 years, Government has paid back approximately US $1.7B of PNC debt. He said that if this sum was spent in Guyana, the country would have been in an even better position than it is today.

President Jagdeo stated his Party’s Presidential Candidate has spent his life fighting for freedom in Guyana and he stands for all Guyanese regardless of their ethnic makeup.
“This is the kind of person this country needs; it needs all of our people working together, the day of racism are dead,” he asserted.
With regards to the AFC, the President said that all of their messages seek to incite racism and divide people. He added too, that their promise of reducing taxes is an empty one because revenue is reduced and expenditure is increased then the deficit will also increase and when this cannot be financed it becomes an inflationary situation.
Ramotar said that the PNC has changed to APNU because it is ashamed of its track record noting that the Party use to spend more money in the Foreign Affairs Ministry than in the social sectors.
He spoke of the many investments made by the PPP/C in the areas of Information Communication Technology (ICT), education, health, and infrastructure and highlighted the developments that Government is currently pursuing such as hydro-electricity, which he said will catapult growth in many sectors.
Dr. Luncheon said that the Opposition, in their quest to return to Office, is prepared to destroy what the PPP/C has worked hard to build over the past 19 years. He too noted that the Party has managed to bring together patriotic Guyanese of all backgrounds.
“Those things that we have accomplished over the past 19 years lay the foundation on which the new Guyana will be built,” the HPS said.
Meanwhile, Minister Rohee said that Guyana needs proactive leadership and judging from the track record, the PPP/C Government has demonstrated that proactiveness. He added that the Party has and will continue to deliver in every sector under Ramotar’s presidency.
Minister Westford said that the development that Guyana has witnessed cannot be denied, she also lamented a recent incident where a few of the Party’s supporters were assaulted and doused with kerosene at a public meeting at Victoria and said that, “we will not be intimidated by anyone.”
