APNU concept too alien to grasp easily - APNU official

A Partnership of National Unity (APNU) is too alien a concept to Guyanese politics for the masses to understand it readily, according to officials of the opposition coalition.

The statement came from PNCR executive Lance Carberry whose party forms the backbone on which the opposition coalition is built. Addressing the media at an APNU news briefing at Congress Place on Thursday he said the challenge lies in educating people about the coalition’s aim.

“It takes a lot of effort to be able to get to the average person and to explain very carefully what is the APNU because we are approaching the matter of election in a very novel way; we are saying that APNU is contesting this election to win the election but having won the election, the APNU will seek to establish a government of national unity and to deal with the issues of transformation of this society, he said.

According to Carberry, It is not an easy concept for people to understand simply because they have not been familiar with something of that nature before

Professor Clive Thomas, who was also present at the briefing, said APNU is seeking a “fundamental transformation” of Guyana’s politics but that he recognised that there are “serious constraints” to overcome to achieve their goal.

According to Dr. Thomas, they will embrace the PPP in such a government despite that party’s efforts to “wound” the APNU. He acknowledged that it was a “grandiose vision” but added that sitting on the sidelines will not do when commitment is needed for something worth fighting for.

“The task is almost impossible but we will continue to pursue it because we believe that where there is life there is hope and we believe that the Guyanese people deserve no less,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Professor Thomas, who is a senior member of APNU’s Policy Committee, said they work is underway on the coalition’s positions on the various sectors and a document should be ready by the time the election date is known.

According to him, among the plans being considered are how they will go about reclaiming the country’s resources from which were “stolen” and the reformation of the security services.

The People's National Congress Reform, now A Partnership for National Unity, says it has stated clearly that it cannot stamp out drug related activities.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, member of the policy committee, Dr Clive Thomas conceded that the Alliance has no plan to counter the drug trade in Guyana.

He said the APNU believes that it is highly impossible to eradicate this practice, since it is embedded within some Guyanese.

Political observers say the party is more caught up in identifying problems under the present administration, than creating solutions, in the event that it is elected.

The government has publicly declared its zero tolerance stance, with regard to the narcotics trade and has put a number of laws in place to deal with this issue, as well as money laundering.

Some 650 million dollars has been pumped into the administration’s national drug strategy master plan, of which considerable progress has been made in achieving several targets.
