Propaganda by Freedom House mouthpiece.

Everything I've read said cause of the fire is unknown. It is irresponsible and incitement for anyone to be claiming and posting online that this is "arson". These are old, wooden buildings with old wiring inside, so who knows?

And Jangles, who is this "Sherriff Security Services" we keep reading about? I don't ever remember a "security service" while growing up in Guyana.

Robbery suspect confesses to setting fire to Brickdam Police Station

A 26-year-old robbery suspect has allegedly confessed to starting the fire that completely destroyed the Brickdam Police Station on Saturday.

Police said that they have managed to secure a video confession from the suspect.

The Princes Street, Lodge man was arrested early on Saturday morning (October 2nd, 2021) and placed in the Brickdam lockups for an alleged robbery under arms at the time of the fire. During the alleged confession, he told investigators that his motive for starting the fire was due to him being detained for a couple of hours and he became frustrated.

Following the fire on Saturday, the prisoners who were in the Brickdam lockups, were questioned and two of them claimed that after the fire was seen and they were taken out of the cells by Cpl George and escorted to the Sparendaam Police Station. There, they were placed in a cell with the suspect.

The two other men – a 29-year-old of Duke Street, Kingston and a clothes vendor of Lodge Housing Scheme – said the suspect related that he took a piece of sponge, wrapped it up on a piece of wire which he lit and pushed it through a ventilation hole in the cell over to a part that had some documents.

It was from there that the fire started.

Police said based on that information, they conducted a video interrogation with the suspect and he reportedly confessed. The man also, allegedly, told the Police that it was another cellmate who gave him a piece of wire to help him start the fire.

The suspect told investigators that he then tore off a piece of sponge from a mattress in the cell that he was in, hooked it on the wire and lit same with a cigarette lighter which he then pushed through a ventilation hole in the cell at Brickdam.

Investigations are ongoing.

Statement from the Guyana Police Force:

The Guyana Police Force’s Regional Police Division 4 ‘A’ Headquarters at Brickdam, Georgetown, has been severely affected by a devastating fire that occurred today Saturday October 02, 2021.

The fire which started about 11:06hrs in the upper part of an Eastern building, spread to several other mainly wooden buildings in the compound, despite the efforts of the members of the Guyana Fire Service who subsequently managed to bring it under control.

All the buildings in the compound have been completely destroyed with the exception of the station lockups, barracks and Impact Base. In addition, a few police vehicles were slightly damaged, while a number of privately owned vehicles that were detained in relation to matters under investigation have been destroyed or damaged.

All the prisoners who were in custody in the Station lockups were safely evacuated and there has been no loss of police or civilian life. However, a few police ranks received minor injuries during valiant efforts to save important records, equipment, furniture and arms and ammunition that have been relocated for safe keeping, and have received medical treatment.

The fire also damaged a business place located in Hadfield Street behind the Brickdam Police Station.

While investigations into the fire are being conducted, police operational activities in the Division are continuing unabated with efforts being made to relocate the affected offices and ranks.

In the meantime, the Guyana Police Force is informing members of the public that temporary police offices/outposts have been established at the St. Stanislaus College to deal with reports and other police related matters.

The public is hereby advised that the 911 number (line) continues to be in operation.

President blasts GFS over performance at Brickdam fire

Expressing disappointment in the Guyana Fire Service’s (GFS) “poor at best” response to the fire which ravaged the Brickdam Police Station yesterday, President Irfaan Ali this morning  blasted firefighters and warned that their lax approach will not be tolerated.

“The response of the fire service was poor, at its best, yesterday, and as President, I hope that the fire service can acknowledge this because if you can’t acknowledge the problem, you can’t deal with it,” the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Services said following a visit to the scene.

Shortly after 11am yesterday, the fire started  in the upper flat of an eastern building in the compound, according to Commissioner of Police Nigel Hoppie. About two hour later, nearly 80% of the structures in the compound were destroyed.

Ali said that with the fire occurring a stone’s throw away from the GPF’s main station at Stabroek, it was appalling to see the response from firefighters.

“This is less than three minutes walk to a main fire station. We cannot continue as a country and as a people to not address these issues. We can’t continue to make investments and not have the return on the investments. Whether it is in the public service, in the hospitals, the inefficiency has to be weeded out. If you don’t want to perform public service then do the honourable thing, don’t take a job in the fire department  and believe it is a part time job,” he emphasied.

Pointing to the “hundreds of millions of dollars” spent on the Fire Service over the years, Ali said they should be ashamed of their response. “To put it crudely, you can’t even respond to an event in your backyard. And the response is not about assets you know, the response is about attitude and commitment and discipline and professionalism and it is about being in a state of readinessâ€ĶI am publicly putting the Fire Service on warning, this cannot and will not be tolerated,” he stressed.
