Shanta’s for sale

Shanta’s Puri Shop on Camp Street
Shanta’s Puri Shop on Camp Street

After a court battle over the ownership of the building housing the popular Shanta’s Puri Shop on Camp Street concluded last year, owner Deodat Persaud has decided to sell.

An advertisement in yesterday’s Sunday Stabroek announced the sale and Persaud, who said, β€œShanta’s is a national institution and has good history in Guyana,” confirmed that he was selling.

In a case that went all the way to the Court of Appeal, a decision was made last July that upheld a High Court ruling that the then occupant of the 225 Camp and New Market Streets building had no legal authority to do so. A ruling was made in favour of Persaud.

Stabroek News reported last year that following the death of businesswoman Parbati Persaud aka Parbatti Persaud, her two sons became locked in a legal battle to gain control of the property. Premdaat Persaud had taken over the business, claiming that the property was sold to him prior to his mother’s death. However, his brother Deodat Persaud, who was named the executor of the woman’s estate, had argued that there was no evidence to support such a claim and had asked his sibling to vacate the property. The business has been a part of Guyana’s culinary history since the 1960’s.

The Court of Appeal, after hearing all arguments in the matter, dismissed the appeal filed by Premdaat and his son Mikail and affirmed the March 20, 2011 decision of High Court judge Rishi Persaud. The court also awarded costs in the sum of $200,000 to Deodat.

That was one of my lunch spot when attending school in G/T. Opposite Shanta's was another competing business, I can't remember the name. I would have a potato ball, dhall puri with sour and wash it down with puma punch.

Ice Palace?

Ice Palace was not opposite.  It was at the corner of Middle and Camp.  Opposite of Ice Palace was Evan’s with the best chicken patty.  Christ Church Secondary was at one of the corners. Opposite Shanta’s was an office building with some nice cars parked up in the yard.

From Shanta’s you had to walk past Plaza cinema to get to Ice Palace.

The shop was on the North of Shanta's, I am talking in the late 60's to Early 70's. The North west corner and Shanta's was on the South West corner.

Worked there in the early 70's , running the canteen. Know Shantas since then , the building looks the same.

I never went to Shanta's. Ice Palace was a short distance from St. Margaret's.

Salt and pepper for cheese roll.  And Rico’s at New Market and Thomas Streets for cupcake.  Brown Betty for chicken in the ruff with a lil roll inside the box.

Whoever buys Shanta's is getting some good intellectual properties. The name is worth alot of money because it could be used in other parts of the country and Caribbean and if these people are smart and they write down how they make their food and they have a way to make it fast. All of this is intellectual properties that comes with the business. If you fellas doubt me then ask Safraz. He is an intellectual property lawyer.

You think so?   I believe that’s where the opportunity was lost. It had developed into a good name a while back but never moved beyond that one location.

While the owner was alive, They should have opened up multiple locations with specific formulas and recipes, then you have substance behind the name.

I think it will disappear in the relics of local history!
