Drug traffickers have apparently now given literal meaning to the term βmoney launderingβ as they sought to smuggle more than 350 kilogrammes of cocaine in soap powder.
A well-placed source said anti-narcotics agents seized the illicit drug stashed in a consignment of Breeze Soap Powder that was destined to Niger, Africa.
The seizure was made at the John Fernandes Limited shipping container yard, Mandela Avenue (back road), Georgetown while the consignment of soap powder was being inspected. The official said the shipper has been arrested and he is assisting investigators with the discovery of the drug on Thursday. The shipment of soap powder was due to leave Guyana On December 4. The seizure was made the same day a Guyanese man confessed to sealing cocaine in several cans of coconut milk. He was fined GUY$30,000 and jailed for four years.
Another Guyanese man pleaded not guilty and has been remanded. The convict was the manager of a packaging company at Coldingen, East Coast Demerara and the other one is a past employee. They have been linked to the US$7.1 million cocaine-in-coconut milk bust earlier this month in Malaysia. The United States Drug Enforcement Agency (USDEA) had tipped off Malaysian authorities about the cocaine shipment that originated in Guyana.
