An amnesty programme geared at getting illegal guns off the street will soon be unveiled, Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan says.

According to Ramjattan, the amnesty is one of the promises made by the APNU+AFC alliance which is to be done in their first 100 days in office. The ‘APNU+AFC Action Programme for the First 100 Days’ makes no mention of a gun amnesty.

I think u got it all wrong. In 1953, the British seized guns belonging to Indians. In 1962, they returned again. At that time, they swept the country and seized every gun owned by Indians-it was illegal for an Indian to have a piece of pipe in his possession. At Blairmont Sugar Estate, where I worked, the British soldiers had every Indian open their tool drawers. If a piece of pipe was found, that person had alot of explaining to do.

Burnham had no fear of guns, Indians had none. However, he fearful of cutlasses. Every Indian house had one. Such fear he had, that he banned cutlasses being sold at random. A signature of three trustworthy blacks were needed for an Indian to purchase a cutlass or in the possession of one.

Burnham had no fear of cutlass unless it refused to cut cane.  Burnham had the GDF which outclassed the best cutlass 100 to 1.

Any countries, not only Guyana. Need to see something more innovative had no fear of cutlass unless it refused to cut cane.  Burnham had the GDF which outclassed the best cutlass 100 to 1.

Please enlighten me as to where it has worked in the long term. I view this as a short term solution to a fundamental problem that exists in many countries, including Guyana. Ramjattan needs to come up with something more innovative. There are many good ideas out there. Additionally, they need to think in terms of critical mass and sustainability.

Are you saying that Indians are the ones with the illegal guns?

If crime was lowered, I see the possibility of guns being turned in.

It seems that you have not visited Guyana for a long time.
