[www.inewsguyana.com] – The Guyana Institute for the Defense of Democracy (GIDD) has condemned the charges of racial incitement brought against former President Bharrat Jagdeo and calls on the democratic forces within Guyana and the Diaspora to unite against “this travesty.”

A press statement from GIDD called on the representatives of the international community in Guyana and the Carter Centre to take immediate steps to stave-off the consequences that are bound to arise from the “calculated ill-will contained in the action brought against the former president.”

The Organisation is also calling on the ruling APNU+AFC administration to demonstrate the same good faith “it is propounding by condemning the inflammatory charge brought by a known opponent of the PPP/C. We call on the responsible controlling authorities in Guyana to immediately dismiss this charge on the basis of its politically motivated character.”

According to the release, “The Guyana Institute for the Defense of Democracy notes that the specific text which forms the basis for the charge of racial incitement is passÉ in all forms of the Guyanese media. The fact that a court decided to listen to the said charge, therefore, can only, and must only be seen, as evidence of a kind of judicial lynching of (Fmr.) President Bharrat Jagdeo.

We close by noting that it was Bharrat Jagdeo who signed term limits into law in Guyana, a constitutional action that is far in advance of any democracy in the Commonwealth.”

Jagdeo appeared at the Whim Magistrate’s Court on Monday, May 25 and was not required to answer the charge. He was placed on his own recognizance and is prevented from leaving the country without the Court’s approval.

The press release says that GIDD was recently formed in the USA.

I believe that Roopnarine should be charged the same for inciting violence twice as he took the stage to tell the people that they MUST NOT accept defeat by any means necessary.

Well, I thought Mr Granger said he will be the president for all, even the 49% who did not vote for him.  I thought he said he wanted a "Unity" govt and had "extended a hand" to the PPP.  However, we see a 90% Afro cabinet, a "layered over" AFC, and an encircled PM, etc.  Now I heard he saying not to worry, he only "tickling backsides" of the the old PNC guards to keep them "happy".

I thought the nation elected a "leader" to lead from the front, not cater to the lowest common denominator.  I would expect a good leader to lead his flock and the rest of the nation onto the "path of righteousness out of the valley of the shadow of death".  A good leader goes out front and makes the unpopular choices and convince his flock it is the right and noble thing.

A good leader does not just follow "proven [failed] tracks" but blazes new trails because, as they say, "doing the same thing over and over and expect a different result is the definition of insanity".  He is clearly not insane, then how does his words "unity" reconcile with his deeds "exclusivity".  Does this then gives credibility to the term used by Ex Pres Ramotar, "disingenuous"?

Brian Teekah, dont know who you are....but you spreading a lot of malicious  rumor about this group in support of Jagdeo calling itselg GIDD. Readers should be aware of this. The names you listed are not associated with this group, as far as my investigation can tell me.

New York based Caribbean Guyana Institute For Democracy (CGID) distances itself from bogus Guyana opposition group

CGID President Rickford Burke

CGID President Rickford Burke

NEW YORK: The Caribbean Guyana Institute for Democracy (CGID) wishes to inform concerned citizens and other supporters that we are in no way affiliated with a purported organization, which has recently surfaced, calling itself “The Guyana Institute for the Defense of Democracy (GIDD).

We have verified that this sham organization is being bandied about by members of Guyana’s opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) which lost the May 11, 2015 general election.

This bogus entity recently issued a statement referring to a current matter before the courts in Guyana, in which Guyana’s Ex-President, Bharrat Jagdeo, is criminally charged with inciting racial violence, as ‘judicial lynching.’

CGID’s position is that the charge against Bharrat Jagdeo is legitimate. Hence, the PPP’s characterization of this matter as “judicial lynching” is as reckless and fanciful as its claim that the 2015 general elections were rigged.

CGID believes that public racial incitement is irresponsible and inappropriate given our support and advocacy for a unified Guyana.  Bharrat Jagdeo’s decision to engage in such reckless, irresponsible behavior will be dealt with in the court of law. We are confident that the court will rule on this matter in conformance with the relevant statutes and available evidence.

While we take great umbrage at this deceitful effort to willfully confuse the public by using a counterfeit organization with a name that is strikingly similar to the name of our organization, we are not surprised by this most recent effort by PPP members in the Diaspora to engage in their usual public deceit.

The deftness with which the PPP engages in plagiarism, intellectual property and copyright infringements, as well as its lack of integrity, creative thinking and ingenuity are well known, but nevertheless appalling. It is the party’s lack of integrity that motivated its campaign planners to steal a campaign ad from President Barack Obama and air it as their own during the May 2015 election campaign.

The Guyanese people as well as the Caribbean and international community have caught on to the PPP’s deceit and will not be fooled.

Emblem of CGID

We urge the PPP and its supporters to cease misleading the public, refrain from divisive political shenanigans and embrace the movement for, and collective efforts towards, national unity.

Guyana deserves enlightened leadership. The people of Guyana have voted decisively to reject the PPP and its divisive politics. They have now embraced enlightened, unity politics.

The PPP must determine if it wants to remain relevant. If it does, then it must eschew racially, divisive politics and embrace national unity. If not the people will continue to judge it harshly!

Yes they are frivolous. Both parties have been engaging in this nonsense since the split....learn your Guyanese history...Jagdeo was calling a spade a spade...not that I am defending him...but we must be able to sift the nonsense from reality.

Is Granger responsible for Jagdeo being charged? The offense was allegedly committed and the charges were filed under the previous administration.

Mr.T

Now that the PPP has lost and the country saw Jagdeo standing in the dock, maybe that's enough humiliation.  May be time to drop case.

Granger can pardon him and be the big guy who saved Jagdeo.
