Albouystown flooding caused by seepage in Sussex Street sluice

Leakage in the Sussex Street sluice door is at the root of the flooding being experienced in Albouystown, Georgetown, the Ministry of Public Infrastructure and the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) said.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry, the high water level being experienced is as a result of a damaged gate groove in the concrete sill of the sluice.

The release noted that while every effort will be made to correct the sluice door defect, this will have to be done in the upcoming dry period as the inlet and outlet have to be blocked off to facilitate the removal and repair of the damaged door.

Sections of Albouystown and surrounding communities woke up to unusually high waters today, despite the fact that there has been no heavy rainfall over the last 48 hours.

Public Relations Officer of the M&CC, Royston King apologised to the residents for the inconvenience and hardship caused by the incident. He also reiterated the council’s commitment to working with the Public Infrastructure Ministry to rectify the problem at the earliest.
