Guyanaβs longest running basketball programme which teaches the fundamentals of the sport to young people, both male and female in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden is presently underway at the Mackenzie High School, Hard Court. In its 29th year, the programme which is being held under the theme, βTeach Them Now and Not Laterβ, bounced off on Monday last and will be targeting a maximum of 50 participants between the ages of 7 β 17 years-old, Hamid informed. The former National player who is also a coach at the highest level said that the programme which is sponsored by a number of individuals and non-profit organisations will continue for many more years to come. This all important programme he said would run for three weeks and serves to ensure equal opportunity for both genders of players. Hamid lamented the fact that the programme whilst playing a critical role in the development of youths has never received any support from Government or the private sector but has survived purely on the benevolence of good friends and family including the likes of James Brush, John Davidson, Michael Carrel, Abdulla Pompey, Save The Child Foundation, MP Jermaine Figueira, Caring For Others Foundation, Gary Stephens and most of all, Almighty God. He believes that if corporate entities invest more in programmes of this nature, βWe will have better men and women in sports like in the developing world.β The dedicated Coach who is also a former FIFA Assistant Referee and current Beach Soccer National Coach reminded that he loves what he is doing and more importantly, providing an avenue for young people to utalise their talent. βI love doing it and I will do it until God is ready for me.β
