-matter transferred to Police for further action

Three Presidential Candidates have been barred from contesting the March 2 general and regional elections because of their dual citizenship status.

Lenox Shuman of the Liberty and Justice Party (LJP), Dr. Vishnu Bandhu of the United Republican Party (URP) and Valerie Leung of the People’s Republic Party (PRP) have been removed from their lists of candidates.

The lists of candidates for each of the 11 parties contesting the elections were gazetted on Tuesday, according to GECOM Commissioner, Bibi Shadick.

However, these persons will be removed and can face charges for giving false declarations to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) on Nominations Day.

Each of the Presidential Candidate presented a signed declaration form to GECOM on Nominations Day.

The form specified that they are qualified to be an elected member of the National Assembly –a requirement to be elected President of Guyana.

Both Shuman and Dr Bandhu have applied to give up their citizenships to Canada and the United States respectively, but GECOM Commissioner, Vincent Alexander on Tuesday said “if one is to apply to be on the candidates’ list and that application requires a declaration, I would assume that at the time of that declaration, you have to be in compliance.”

He explained that these three candidates are not eligible to be on the lists and will be removed.

Dr Bandhu provided a letter purportedly from the U.S Department of State, which revealed that his US citizenship was officially relinquished on January 16, 2020 – six days after Nominations Day.

Up until Nominations Day, Shuman was still waiting to hear from the Canadian Government about his application to relinquish his citizenship.

Despite their removal, the parties will still be contesting the elections since the parties’ National Top Lists have more than the required number of Candidates to fill the now vacant post.

Additionally, the Commission at its Statutory meeting on Tuesday decided to get the Police involved.

“The Police have been written and should have been written with respect to these persons who have made false declarations with respect to their dual citizen status,” GECOM Commissioner Robeson Benn told the media.

It is not clear whether the letter was dispatched.

Dr Bandhu has contested national elections in the past and both of the major political parties have had dual citizens on their lists of candidates and later Members of Parliament.

This was discontinued after an Alliance For Change (AFC) Parliamentarian who holds Guyanese and Canadian citizenship voted against his Government in a No-Confidence Motion in December 2018 bringing about a court case which sought to challenge the validity of his vote.

The court ruled that it is illegal to be sitting in the National Assembly as a dual citizen, causing several Government Ministers to resign from their posts as well as Opposition Parliamentarians.

It is because of this, GECOM is being more cautious this election.

These fools didn't stay in Guyana and struggle through the hard times but want to go back and take the number job in the country. They don't seem to have the common decency to at least start at a place below the top. They are all chasing soup. No one will convince me that their minds are not completely on the soup.

WOW.!..Shuman is a big disappointment...of all people I thought the Amerindians would give him a couple of seats.

AND, who would have thought...that lady is a priest, no??

I wonder if she lies to her congregation????

They should all go to jail...given the prominence this issue received since the NCV...they should put them all in the same cell.

How did they think they could have gotten away with this???

I am predicting that Bandhu will rescind his request for revocation...dont see him giving up his US citizenship so easily, now that he faces the prospect of going to jail...

Too many joksters in Guyana.

Bandu eventually gets landu.

These people should have known the relevance of dual citizenship after the recent prominent issues in the past year.

URP’s Dr Vishnu Bandhu says he is now ‘Guyanese only’

United Republican Party [URP] Presidential Candidate Dr Vishnu Bandhu on Monday declared that he has now relinquished his status as a United States citizen and can contest the March 02 general and regional elections.

The URP gained a total of 432 votes in the 2015 general and regional elections.

Dr Bandhu’s name appeared on his party’s nominations list even though the process was not complete; the Constitution bars anyone with dual citizenship from contesting the elections and candidates are required to make a statutory declaration that they meet the qualifications.

In an interview with the News Room, Dr Bandhu said his intentions were always to relinquish his United States citizenship ahead of the upcoming elections.

“I went through the process and I got my certificate of loss of citizenship of the US [United States] approved on the 16th of this month [January],” Dr, Bandhu stated

Dr Bandhu went on to state that a copy of the certificate was then sent to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) with the aim of informing them that he no longer has dual citizenship.

Dr Bandhu said he was never secretive about his status.

Bandhu provided the News Room with copies of his approved certificate of loss of nationality from the US Department of State as well as a letter from GECOM allowing him to contest the upcoming election as a presidential candidate.

I think that the PPP will hold on to their Amerindian support. While you guys were wondering where Irfaan was because he was not often in the news, he was visiting the Amerindian communities in other regions, solidifying their support.

In Shuman's case, he is a native to the land. How can he not be a Guyanese? Indians forever linked to India who gave them special status as Indians. Afro looking ppl consider Africa to be their motherland. Pan-Africanism is forever a Black ppl ting, even Bob Marley wanted to take all Negro looking ppl back to Africa. Shuman is more of a Guyanese than any descendants of Slaves and quasi-slaves.

None of us have anyone on the ground in Guyana. If having someone in Guyana to prove what is written here, then close this forum and let's find somewhere else to vent Guyana's politics.
