The Investiture Ceremony 2019, under the Orders of Guyana, was held yesterday at the National Cultural Centre, with almost four score persons being honoured for their service to Guyana.

The President bestowing awards on some of the recipients

The awards are bestowed based on work done in a diverse array of fields, such as academia, business, charity, economics, education, enterprise, faith, sports, and security.
The ceremony involved a tribute from the National Dance Company, and musical renditions of national songs led by the Guyana Police Force Band and Choir.
The awardees were honoured by President David Granger and the Chancellor of the Judiciary, Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards.
The President recalled that the Constitution established the National Honour System to recognise persons whose service “has had immeasurable impact” on the country.
“These awards should never be disregarded or disparaged,” he said. The National Awards have to be restored to a place of prominence, he added.
The awards have been conferred annually, since 2015, and the President has assured that that practice will not break form.
Chancellor Justice Cummings-Edwards said that the nation was built through hard work, pain and sacrifice, and that these annual awards are to honour the persons who continue to build on the strength of the nation.
She noted the importance of recognising – even iconising – citizens for their hard work.

President and Chancellor of the Orders of Guyana, David Granger

A Tribute from the National Dance Company

The Constitution of the Orders of Guyana makes provision for the National Awards.
The National Award tradition, as it is currently known, began in 1970 when Guyana gained Republic Status. Initially, Guyana had started out with two orders, The Order of Excellence and The Order of Roraima. These are the two highest orders that could be conferred on a citizen. The Order of Service was added six years later. It constitutes the General Awards: the Cacique’s Crown of Honour, the Golden Arrow of Achievement, and the Medal of Service.
Special Awards within the Order of Service are given for courage and bravery, military service and service to the Police Service, the Prison Service, and the Fire Service: the Cacique Crown of Valour, the Golden Arrow of Courage, the President’s Commendation for Brave Conduct, the Military Service Star and Medal, the Disciplined Service Star for Distinguished Service, and the Disciplined Services Medal for Meritorious Service, Long Service and Good Conduct.
Justice Cummings-Edwards said that citizens of other countries may also be awarded for service of an outstanding or exceptional nature.

Addressing a packed gathering at the National Cultural Centre, the President while admitting that it has been a while now since the awards ceremony was held, it is important that Guyana continue to recognize the contributions of its citizens.
Role
The awards, he noted, would have covered areas from rice, sugar, bauxite, culture and almost every aspect of the Guyanese lives. The awardees have all played an important role in building the country’s ‘foundations’.He challenged them not to sit back but continue to play their role in ensuring that the next generation benefits. He noted the awards were but a token of the country’s appreciation. The ceremony would be the last of its kind for Jagdeo who is due to step down, after the November 28 General and Regional Elections, after serving two consecutive terms as President .According to the President yesterday, he has no problems with Guyanese excelling or accumulating wealth, once it is done honestly. In a parting message on the upcoming elections, the official hoped that it would serve as a uniting force for the country with Guyanese not losing sight of who they are as a people.

National Awards were last held in 2002.
The first appointments to the Orders of Guyana were made in 1970.
The highest national award is the Order of Excellence of Guyana, which is limited to six living citizens of Guyana. The Order of Roraima of Guyana, the second highest national award, is limited to thirty-five living citizens of Guyana.

After then, several other persons received national awards individually, including posthumously, President Cheddi Jagan, for whom a special award, namely the Order of Liberation, was declared.

For those sufferers of loss of memory the above is refresher.  Sometimes focusing on too much negativity dulls  reasoning.

Looks like those who fetch slop can for pnc are correct, not to downplay the atrocities but only 5 were actually murdered. What is troubling though is the mob mentality taken by the people that django now support unconditionally.

If you, Carib, Stormborn, Iguana and the few others who oppose them stop posting, they will be left socializing with each other, and the board will die. Maybe that's what Amral and Raymond want.

Actually, the board died a long time ago when many of the fun folks left. The best era since I joined was when the Social forum was buzzing. We are only hanging around the Political forum because we have not yet fully decided to leave GNI. But maybe Amral will give us that final push next year when he abandons GNI.

I agree with Kaz, the board has died a long time ago.  It is strange thought that the sloppy ones get paid to post pnc propaganda here. Eventually it will be closed and I will have no more sloppy boys to knock around. Maybe its for the better, I can concentrate more on my music and foreign language development. Meanwhile the fight against the slopsters continue.
