Art and craft designer Coretta Kingston keeps an old trade alive

Apr 15, 2019 News, https://www.kaieteurnewsonline...-an-old-trade-alive/

A movement in the late 19th century known as “art and craft” was the platform for a trade that has been practiced for generations.

Art and craft describes a wide variety of activities involving making things with all sorts of materials.

Sadly, it is rare now to find a person taking up art and craft as a profession. However, a very humble 49-year-old woman is turning this hobby into a trade.

Coretta Vanessa Kingston, from Lot 27 Section ‘B’ Non Pariel, East Coast Demerara plies her daily trade from her home, and has been putting out some amazing home decor.

“I first started off doing my art work as simple home décor, and for ordinary house parties and church functions.” Kingston stated.

“My skill was self taught. Art and craft are innate in nature and therefore I have always found myself being creative with anything that is handed to me, so I started to watch YouTube videos to learn to create outstanding pieces.”

With her skills the mother of two girls produces bottled art, floor vases, center pieces and decorative hats. Glass bottles, so difficult to dispose of now, have been turned into works of art.

Tall, short, stout and slender glass bottles, all destined for the scrap heap, have been given a new touch of life by Kingston. The bottled art is always one to catch the eye as it is made into ornaments, picture frames and vases.

“The items that I create are made of recycled materials. For the bottled art I recycled glass bottles, for the vase I used PVC pipe and the decorative hats are made from plastic bottles.” Kingston highlighted.

Soon enough, with a boost from family members and friends, Kingston started a business putting out her work.

“Family and friends encouraged me to acquire financial gain from my art work instead of doing it out of leisure activity and as a result, ‘Coretta’s Creative Art Attack’ was created.

She also indicated that the business is relatively new as it was established only last month. Moreover, despite the fact that ‘Coretta’s Creative Art Attack’ has just hit the block, persons have been very encouraging and uplifting about the work that Kingston does.

“This platform now allows me to harness the uplifting words that come from my supporters in a manner that will make me want to keep striving to do even greater work and to challenge myself.” She said.

In saying that, Kingston further highlighted that she is confident about her work and hopes that it has an impact on others in such a way that they will follow in her path to be creative with recycled items and also keeping the skill of art and craft alive.

Good for her. Craftwork is very relaxing and opens the mind. I have a buddy whose mom saw various shapes in rock to which she would ply her craft but the banna never cared. About three months after his mom passed away, he changed, it was as though her spirit got into him, he suddenly started noticing shapes just as she did. When I last saw him he had a showroom with awesome stuff on show.

Today I took a couple pics of some items I am working on..perhaps I should post a couple.

For the skull I used walnut.

That is cool Cainman. I tried my hand on some of these back in the 70s but struggled as I didn't have the proper tools. Making those beaded wristbands in the early 70s was easier as they didn't require lots of tools. I used to make those crafts with the nailed board and colored strings. Those were all just past time activities back then.

I refrained from GNI for 24 hours and came  up with the idea of turning coca cola 2 liter plastic bottles into small flower pots. My son saw them yesterday and thought they were real pots i purchased.  I felt good.

You have an eye for shapes. Use t hat skill to decorate the fret board of guitars with mother of pearl inlays. I think you should go into building those instruments. You will make them pretty and make a hell of a lot of money. I bought an entire guitar repair business  and have all the tools and even lots of wood in storage. It is one of those things I may never get around to doing in life.  If I had room for a workshop that is exactly what I would do.

Banna I'm not into working to hard, I do some for a shop on the main strip here, I am in retirement and in no hurry to do shit, been there, done that for over fifty years, since running barefooted I made flower pots from car tires, turning them inside out, carving out petals, I used shoemaker knives on those.

I once had some work done on my lawn which had no fence in the front so to keep neighbours from walking on the lawn I made a set of golfers and stuck em into the ground in various places, flags, the whole bit, People stayed off and viewed it from the roadway...none were ever stolen.

Oh yeh,  there were no Guyanese peopled em living round that neighbourhood. hehehe

From those golfers I had orders for quite a bit. A neghbour's dad also purchased a few dozen off me and took them down to Florida where they are being enjoyed.

See what a colourful butterfly hanging in me living room can do !!  Beautiful minds create beautiful things.

Great stuff Cain, maybe de Oventic Zapatistas can help your sales in Europe.

If only we can put our minds together to build, what a beautiful world this would be.

That Canadian pension plan is helping Mitwah see the world.

Canada has great benefits, it's just the cold weather that bothers me.

Precisely why I live in South Florida. We can wear shorts in January.

In fact, the only thing that can beat us wearing shorts any day of the year is seeing you in shorts any day of the week.
